You forget that Mel Gibson did not choose his father. I am sure his father indoctrinated Mel with his hatred and it is too bad that Mel did not see the light when he left his father's home.

However, Obama specifically chose his pastor and stayed with him for 20+ years.

I don't know what you mean when you say that Mel didn't see the light. He has spoken out time and time again that he does not hold the same beliefs as his father.

As for comparing Mel's situation to Obama's, I never used Mel's example as a means of saying they are the same thing, I compared them to show that I don't play the double standard game.

Why should they make a martyr out of the man when he is doing a fine job of digging his own grave?? He's taking a stand that many will consider bold face lying for political gain. I know you're on the defensive right now, but I also know that you're smart enough to realize that this is a bombshell that reaches across party lines, and it will have consequences.

Sorry, I don't see it. I thought his explanation was quite acceptable and succinct, and the lack of negative response in D.C. is quite telling, imho. And again, lets face it..... if a political scandal is ever legitimate and justified, neither party's bulldogs are going to let someone "dig their own grave" without a little help.

I'm refering to the John McCain story and the now debunked idea he had an affair with a lobbyist, that was front page NYT news....

this story has far more "meat" than that one did, and I hear crickets chirping.

Since anything the NYT prints is instantly discredited, I don't see where it makes much difference. If it makes you feel better, CNN had extensive coverage on it all last night.

He said he never knew of any hateful sermons or speech. But over the past months he has referred to him as being like a crazy uncle. If he never heard hateful, outrageous speech, how was he a crazy uncle? He isn't being truthful. And his own words prove it.

This video still doesn't negate the racist stuff he's said.

No one is saying that it does and no one is defending the vile statements this pastor has made. Still though, these videos have been cherry picked and there are years in the gaps from one to the next.

The issue is not is this pastor right or wrong, but does Obama share his beliefs? Barring further information, I just don't believe he does.

With that cynical approach, then you'll have to admit that the "scandal" wouldn't even have to be legitimate or justified for the bulldogs to go in for the kill. We all have seen time and again when both sides have attempted to capitalize over silly crap. You can define this particular situation anyway you choose, but to say that the reason it isn't being swooped down upon is because it has no meat, is a very weak argument.
