can someone please explain the middle school kid's psyche to me?

we had our annual bomb scare yesterday.

yesterday two boys told their teacher that something scary had been written on the wall in the boys' room. the teacher was sufficiently alarmed by what they said to send them to the principal. the principal was sufficiently alarmed to evacuate the building (it was 10 minutes before school was to be dimissed anyhow) and cancel all after-school programs. the school had all the lockers searched last night, and for the next few days every child's backpack wiol be searched before he or she enters the building. chances are very good that it's a hoax and they'll find nothing.

but we had the same thing happen last March, only it was something written in the girls' bathroom. and the March before that, same story.

the principal says that 10-15 years ago he would have simply asked the custodian to wash the nasty messages off the walls, but in this day and age he has to take things very seriously.

Local Catholic school had a bomb scare yesterday as well. It was earlier though about 1:00pm. The kids had to stand outside on the Long Beach boardwalk for an hour. It was extremely windy and they were very cold. I can't for the life of me imagine what kind of thrill these idiots get from doing this :(

My teenage dd's school gets these about once a month. I'm afraid they aren't being careful any more. :( Her highschool is a campus like setting. There are a lot of buildings. they just evacuate the building and go on.

These are scary times we live in:(

{{HUGS}} that really stinks. I am so sorry that our children have to go throught these things.:(

Two years other middle school in the district had similiar event. During the locker search an illegal substance was found in at least three lockers. Knew one of the boys, nothing happened to him besides three day supension. last nights search must have been a quick search went past at 6:10 PM. School was open last night for gymnastics and tons of cars in the parking lot for local soccer practices

Schools are not locked down in the evening anywhere in the district. Anyone can get into any of the schools and write or do anything they please. Perhaps they should put doors on the bathrooms and classrooms. Most janitors at night can be found in their offices watching TV.

(((Hugs))) Briar Rose.

I can empathize with your feelings. Last year we had a series of events of this sort at our middle school. Shortly after the asst. superintendent told parents at a meeting "not to worry about such things because this is XXXXXXX (name of town) and such things just don't happen here". Yea right.

Anyway, we had 3 evacuations in a week, lots of after school activities cancelled, buidling was virtually locked down for 2 weeks. Kids needed to use the restroom, even at lunch time and they had to have an adult escort. Evening rehearsal for the elite boys' chorus - extra adults had to be present so someone was always with the kids. Not a fun time.

Fingers crossed - this year has been better.

Patch'sD, I hear it's worse in the high schools. I graduated from the high school where your kids go, and 20 + years later I can tell you all the "hiding places" where the kids hang out.

BR You have done your job right and will never have to worry about your girls. They know what is right and wrong. To many kids in that school don't and you can tell where they got it from in meeting some of the parents. My boys have never had any real problems. They are very active. One is an excellent student. The other likes to have a little to much fun, which has caused me in middle school and high school to get to know the administration a little more than I would care too. I worry about my daughter, she is a little on the heavy side. She will start middle school next year. Girls there can be very cruel. We try to keep her active in sports so that she won't become isolated. Me and My wife will go off the wall if anyone tries to treat her as a second class citizen.

sports teams for girls are just great.

my older dd tried out for the basketball team and didn't make it. but no matter, she's a cheerleader and she's a dancer in the school play and has lots of friends. younger dd can't wait to get to middle school and do all the things older dd is doing.

keep them active and involved, and keep them out of trouble, right?

I have had dealings with that Basketball Coach. He would not know a Basketball player even if Michael Jordan was standing in front of him. Tell your Daughter to keep trying, The Eighth grade coach is great.

lol, if she can find the time next year! she'll be on the cheerleading squad again, and who knows what other clubs.

How sad that we must take things like this so seriously but that is our world today.

I'm really glad there was no bomb found, though.
