We want to try something new. We were looking at Boma. I am not familiar w/African food. We like trying new foods, but not ones strong w/herbs and spices. For example, we do not enjoy Indian food. Love Italian and German.
Can you tell me more about Boma's food (dinner).

Also, for my picky little guy, what kinds of typical foods do they have?

Thanks!

We LOVED it! Did I say we LOVED it? HA! We were pleasantly surprised. We at at Sanaa the day before and didn't care for it at all; the spices were way too overwhelming for me. I was going to cancel but my DH convinced me to try it and we loved it. It was so yummy. While they did have some unusual spiced food, the majority was just delicious! They had the "typical" kids foods as well.

Boma is our favourite Disney Restaurant, eat there at least once every holiday. It is filled with unique and very yummy options but also has plenty of " normal" food for picky eaters and kids

All true!

That said, though, if the entire party is made up of picky eaters it's probably not worth going out of your way for. If you are staying at AKL and would like the convenience of eatting at the hotel one night, by all means, give it a try. If you aren't,and you also aren't interested in the more adventurous options, the trip over to AKL may not be worth it for you.

Thank you for the help. It sounds like something we should try.

Only our little guy is picky. He likes bread and butter and burgers and pizza. ;)

Many of Boma's dishes are sweet. There are several with cinnamon. While my family and I enjoy Boma, we did take some friends who are plain eaters and they didn't like it at all. They were adults but the only foods they enjoyed were those they got from the children's pod (they did try many dishes but didn't like them). There is not an abundance of adult selections that do not have seasoning.

The children's pod has an excellent selection of foods that do not have the typical Boma seasoning.

Heh, well... in our world not liking foods "strong w/herbs and spices" classifies as picky, and fits with the way I intended the description to be used above.

Like i said though, you'll still like the more "normal" foods, but the "different" foods are really the attraction and what make the extra travel out to AKL (if you aren't staying there) worthwhile.

We went to Boma in February, there's a link to the review with pics in my signature

I would say German food is about the most polar opposite of african food, in terms of spice and seasoning. German food is typically very bland.

Boma is full of flavor (not hot spicy though). So if you don't like spices like cardamom and cumin and cinnamon and turmeric (to name just a few), you probably won't like Boma.

If you're on the dining plan then I would say give it a shot. If not then paying out of pocket for dinner there is pretty expensive, and in my experience I didn't really enjoy the ethnic foods too much. I grabbed a little of everything, tasted it and that was it. I had expected more, and left dissapointed.

Breakfast however is the best in all of WDW in my opinion.

I was apprehensive before our first dinner at Boma, because in my mind I thought it would be more like Indian food. The barrier for me is that I seem to be very sensitive to peppers. I don't have an allergy but to my mouth there is no such thing as a "mild" pepper. They all burn.

LOVED Boma. There are spices but most of the food is not spicy, if you know what I mean. When in doubt, ask. Although it is a buffet there are a lot of chefs behind the tables who are happy to help. Do be aware that many of the main dishes can be and are prepared different ways on different days. The first time we went, the salmon they had out was crusted with pistachios and was crazy good. The next trip, the salmon they had out that day was covered with green and red peppers and the chefs were warning people that it was the "hottest" dish they had that day. DH tried some and agreed.

We love Boma. We find the food somewhat similar to what you'd find in Southern cuisine (we're from SC.) There is a nice assortment of items and the desserts are wonderful. Even my somewhat picky husband finds things he likes at Boma.

I will tell you our experience.

We did not like it. All the dishes are made with sweet spices as said above, cinnamon, vanilla and fruit flavors. These are in EVERYTHING. The meats are rubbed with it, all the veggies, sides, even the soups had a sweet tone to them.

We sampled everything on the buffet that night, couldn't find anything we liked. And we love spicey (hot) flavors. Needless to say we were very disappointed. It wasn't that the dishes were bad, or bad food, just not for us.

Now if you like sweet flavors you will love it. People always say "kids love it"...the reason why is it is like eating dessert for dinner.
