Boma or Sanaa?

Staying at AKL in a few weeks and want to make an ADR for one of these restaurants. Which one is better and might have more options for someone who is a simple eater ( think chicken strips and burgers )?

Well, since Boma is a buffet, and there are some simple things on the Buffet, it might be a better choice if you have someone in your party who is truly not adventurous. Unless they're a child - in which case the children's menu has the standard innocuous stuff.

We've never done Sanaa - doing that this trip. Have eaten at Boma quite a bit and most of the food there isn't "the usual" buffet fair. Most of the food has all sorts of, for lack of a better word, exotic - seasonings and flavorings. I loved the soups and my husband really like the fufu - which was a sweet potato dish.

If you want burgers and chicken strips - then The Mara (quick service) at AKL would be more like it.

In the kids' buffet at Boma they have chicken fingers, fries, penne, etc. But try the other foods, they taste really good!

I like Boma better. Sanaa has more of an Indian influence, and that is really not my thing. They did have a standard kids meal there as well (pizza, chicken nuggets - can't remember). The view at the Sanaa is terrific - it looked like a giraffe was going to walk over and sit down at our table.

I see things like Durban-spiced roasted chicken and Spit-fired prime rib. Is this just chicken and ribs or do they have some weird sauces on them?

If I were you, I would go with Boma. Both restaurants are fantastic, but Boma has some more familiar, simple things on the menu, like chicken fingers, fries, and cookies for dessert. Then, you could try anything else you want that is different from what you normally eat and decide if you like it. If not, you have the "safer" more familiar items to eat.

Sanaa is excellent too, but you are more limited if you are a simple eater. They have a regular grilled NY strip steak, but their other food seems to be more on the exotic side. That's right up our alley, which is probably why we loved Sanaa so much when we ate there last month. However, if we had been traveling with other people who were not into exotic and different tastes, we probably would go with Boma. My kids loved Sanaa because they have a kids' menu with usual kid fare (pizza, etc.), and the view of the animals (we were at a table by the window).

Neither place is great for simple eaters unless you are eating from children's menu. I think Sanaa has better options for adults who want a simple entree. Almost every dish at Boma, outside of the kids section, is unusual.

I am a pretty basic eater. I like Boma, but did not care for Sanaa.

The OP's use of the word "weird" to describe the sauces leads me to wonder of he or she would be happy in either restaurant. That aside, I would concur with the posters who suggested that Boma might be a better choice. There are some standard food choices on the buffet, but many of the other offerings have different spices and herbs. We love both restaurants and have upcoming reservations to return to both, but I do believe that it might be harder for the OP to find something acceptable on the Sanaa menu. As another poster mentioned, if the Op wants to visit AKL there is always the possibility of going to the CS restaurant, The Mara, for chicken strips and burgers.

We ate at both last week and LOVED both! I don't think either would have a burger; you could probably get chicken nuggets at either (I KNOW Boma has them on the kids section of the buffet, Sanaa might have them on the kid's menu, but we didn't see one). Boma just has MORE choices, so it seems like a "simple eater" would be bound to find something, at least. The roast beef wasn't very simple, had a different kind of seasoning or smokiness to it, but there was a roast chicken and a baked salmon that were pretty simple.

I would have a very hard time choosing between these restaurants. If/when we stay at AKL again, we will certainly make our way back to both! (Disclaimer: no "simple eaters" in our party)

We have dined many times at Boma, including this summer. We dined once (this summer) at Sanaa. We love both restaurants...however, we will give the edge to Boma as more of a guaranteed slam-dunk for everyone. I was not that crazy about the entrees at Sanaa. We loved the Naan and the Chai creme. My parents who ordered "American entrees" like fish and steak were much happier than those of us who ordered the Indian entrees. Yeah...if I had to choose one (I would likely choose both again) I would go with Boma.

Sanaa was one of the best suprises in years for us. Its now one of our must-dos.

I enjoyed Sanaa, but for someone without exotic tastes I'd pick Boma. Jiko is actually the best of the three, in my book...

I like Sanaa, but not enough to go back again. I've had much better Indian food at home for much cheaper.
Never eaten at Boma, but I just made a resie :)

We did both last year. Boma is delicious. I would highly recommend it. :thumbsup2

As for Sanaa, while I did enjoy their food, my wife felt ill after eating there. :confused3

So, if you can only pick one, I'd go with Boma. Gives you a chance to try the Africa influenced dishes, and if you don't like them, try more standard fare.

I'd recommend the Creamy Carrot and Ginger soup if you do go to Boma! Wow that was good! :goodvibes

That's what I was thinking...thanks for confirming my choice. I choose Jiko over Sanaa (never been to either, been to Boma many times though). I can get Indian food anytime at home- Jiko seemed more "special".

We ate at both, and neither were good for our taste buds. The spices on the foods did not taste great.

Don't know if you're going for lunch or dinner, but Sanaa has a very basic turkey club sandwich for lunch. My DS got it and it was very good. DH got the angus burger on naan. If you ask for it without the sauces and mint salad, it's a basic cheeseburger.

We've never been to Boma.
