Boiled Peanuts!

My Dad puts peanuts in his coke, he is from south Georgia.

I personally can't stand boiled peanuts, it makes them taste too much like what they really are... BEANS. My dad loves them and eats them on a regular basis. I keep trying them every couple years to see if my tastes have changed. NOPE, still taste gross to me.

Not to hijack the thread, but speaking of peanuts,do any of you folks from the south put peanuts in your coke?I've heard that's a treat.:)

Absolutely! Not boiled peanuts though, roasted and salted. But only in a glass bottled coke. Also great in an ice cold bottle of beer.

And I love boiled peanuts. Yum...

I haven't had peanuts in a coke in decades. What a flashback! Yes, it's good! Like JennyDarling explained, you put the salted nuts in a glass coke bottle. We would buy a pack of Lance salted peanuts and pour them in a large coke. The result was a salty, sweet, fizzy thing of beauty! :goodvibes

I had to google what in the heck they were. They sound totally nasty!

I really don't understand how you eat them.

It's funny as I read this I'm snacking on honey roasted peanuts and Diet Coke :thumbsup2 I used to do the peanuts in Coke thing when I was a kid but prefer them seperate now, I just think it messes up the taste of Coke.

LOVE boiled peanuts, hot, boiled in salt water only, although I'd be willing to try the boiled in beer recipe. I will eat them cold but agree they get somewhat slimy.
DH grew up in Southern Cal he thinks they are "yucky" funny thing is I think Edemmame (I have no idea if I spelled that right) taste like boiled peanuts and he likes those

I take a peanut in my left hand, then move it towards my mouth. I then grip the nut between my front teeth, and bite down just hard enough to crack open the shell. With my tongue, I move the empty portion of the shell aside and dig the nuts out of the other portion of the shell. Both empty shells are then deposited back into said left hand, and I chew vigorously. Procedure is repeated, after a swig of diet Mountain Dew. :lmao::rotfl:
Sorry! I couldn't resist! LOL!:flower3:

We all have different tastes, and different opinions, and that is fine. Makes life interesting. But I take offense at the "real" peanuts comments. I grew up planting them, hoeing them, harvesting them, cleaning them, cooking them,.......how is that not real but the processed ones you buy in the store are? :confused3

If you ate some and they were slimy, they were not freshly boiled.

I used to put peanuts (not boiled for heaven's sake!) in my cokes when I was a kid, but haven't tried that in years:).

I bet some of you turn up your noses at fried catfish and sweet tea, too.:snooty:

HA! Funny how this thread appears, and I am making some as we speak in the crock pot. Someone gave me that tip years ago, just set it and forget it. We are heading to the beach tomorrow, and I will have my Southern goodness packed in the cooler.

I like 'em cold by the way.....and none of this Cajun flavored business.

Oh, and usually this time of year I make several batches and then freeze. I take 'em out to let them thaw, and then have a tasty treat on Friday night football games (husband is a coach) or college games on Saturday.

Actually that helped! I wasn't sure if they were so soft you ate the shells or if they were shelled first then boiled. I didn't know if they were a fork food like beans or if you put your hand in actual water or strained them. Are they eaten plain or with something on or with them. I'm a western gal ;)

I LOVE boiled peanuts, but I prefer them cold. Sadly, there haven't been any decent green peanuts down here in the grocery stores. :sad1:

Oh good! (I was in a silly mood.) They really are eaten much like peanuts that are roasted in the shell whole, except the shell doesn't crumble. There's more "mouth work" involved. Someone here compared them to edamame and, although I never really thought about it, that was an excellent comparison. They taste salty and earthy.
Green (fresh) peanuts are boiled in salted water. The only way to tell if the nut inside the shell is done, is to keep cracking one open and testing it. You can't look at them and tell. When they're done, they are left to cool and soak. The longer they are allowed to soak in the salted cooking water, the saltier they become. Leftovers are refrigerated, but they should never be slimy. The only slimy peanuts I've ever encountered were old and should have been thrown out. :)

Sorry if I offended you. A real peanut to me is roasted & crunchy. I have had them straight from the boiling water and they still tasted slimy.

I wasn't really offended, just making a point:goodvibes. I love raw peanuts, straight from the ground, too. My husband thinks that is gross.:confused3

Now if you want to talk about the grossness of chitterlings, I'll agree with you 100%.

Oh my goodness! I must defend the nut, although I'll give y'all the "bowled" part! :cutie:

Boiled peanuts are fresh, unadulterated-in-any-way, green peanuts. They are boiled in salt water till the nut inside the shell is tender, like a properly cooked bean. It should not be overly mushy.
Smell? I suppose they smell a bit earthy, like a perfectly fresh wild mushroom!
If your peanut is slimy, then it has been around for far too long. I have seen that problem in those convenience store peanuts. Yuck! I cook my own.
As properly explained by SMS, they are the bomb with Mountain Dew - or diet Mountain Dew, in my case.
If after having eaten a properly prepared boiled peanut you still do not care for them, then I understand. I can never really trust you or be your friend, but I do understand. :snooty:

All except the Mountain Dew part! Hot, salty, with an icy cold coke, and a UGA game to go with them!! Mmmmmmmmm.......football season is just around the corner, and it's my favorite season of the year!!
