Bogus Pizza delivery

I just heard on the news that there is a bogus pizza delivery service handing out flyers to Disney guests. Once you call for delivery and give your CC number they use the info to go shopping. Disney is warning guests to beware.

Well, that sounds easy enough to trace...just give the cops the number off the flier....

Unfortunately this has been going on for quite a while and not just at the WDW resort area. These crooks print out flyers with similiar names to real pizza joints and target tourists. They usually use a prepaid cell phone so there is nothing to trace. Do your research and make sure you are ordering from a real brick an mortar business and make sure the phone number is real. The Yellow pages is a good start.

We were warned about this when we stayed offsite last year. They had a binder of trusted local places and strongly suggested that we not use any flyers left on cars or at the doors.

Wow. :confused3 I appreciate you posting this OP. Sadly, it seems very easy for bad people to do... And great advice to use recommended businesses or a phone book.

I got one of these under my door at Universal in December and noticed that there was no address on the flier and they ONLY accept credit cards. So I called to harass them pretending that I had a legit order. I said "I want to come get some pizza, what is your address?" The guy said, "Uhhh.................it's my first day." I said, "You don't know where you are right now?" He said "No" I said "Ask somebody."

He hung up.

Then I called back about 20 minutes later and made a huge order. At the end, he asked for my CC info and I said, "No, that's okay, I'll just give you cash when you get here." "We only take credit cards here." "Uh, I don't think that's legal." ".........." "Why would a legitimate business only take credit cards?" Hung up.

Yes, I had nothing to do that night.

One other aspect to the "scam" is that yes you will get a pizza, but its not a fresh baked one from a real brick and mortar store but someone who buys frozen pizzas and bakes them in some sort of fly by night setup in a garage.

Two and half years ago we stayed off site so we were fair game for the Pizza Flyers.

Every night, two or three would pop up under our door. My sons made a weird observation. All the the Pizza packages, large pizza, bread sticks and 6 pack of pop where all the same price or with in 5 cents. In fact all the menus looked like they were printed by the same company, kind of like Chinese menus. I was just thinking they were being competitive.

Well we ordered our pizza and we did get it, wasn't the best but beat WDW prices.

Flash forward to Feb of last year, I was planning a band trip to WDW and on the first night we have pizza for them. We stayed at an off site hotel and I asked the sales manager where we could get pizza delivered and brought up those fliers and we should maybe pick one of them.

He told me they just had a hotel association meeting where they discussed these places and he said they were trying to crack down on the fliers. He didn't go into detail but now I understand.

We got Flippers for the band and I guess it was OK for "Florida style" pizza. :goodvibes

Great info OP...I tend to let my guard down at Disney but will remember this!

Lou, I like your style!

Exactly -- don't assume for a second that just because there's a flyer under the door that the company has been vetted or approved by WDW. There's really no way they can keep the flyers out of the hotels short of an ID check of every person coming thru the door.

Yep, seems like I remember that on our last trip Windsor Hills had a note that actually said they will only permit certain places to deliver because of the scams. Of course they check everyone coming in since they are a gated community.

We had three flyers put under our door on our last trip. You can call security to walk through the halls, but by then they are usually gone. I just throw them out.

The pizza scam has been going on for a long time. You have to also watch some of the hotel staff as they sometimes get a kickback. Use common sense and when all else fails go with a Dominos/Pizza Hut chain.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I would totally do this.

It's sad that people would fall for these tricks - it would suck to have your vacation ruined because of it!

We've heard the warning that some pizza may have been cooked in a garage . . . or worse. What could be worse? Cooked on an engine block?

One offsite pizza place that isn't like that and I can vouch for is Flippers. I'm sure there are many out there but Flippers is so good and has a nice menu.

Yum.

:)

We had flyers for a pizza place under our door at the Poly pretty much every day when we were there a few weeks ago. I didn't really look at them - I just threw them away, but now I'm wondering if they were some kind of scam like this.

It's not just hotels either. These same places take the flyers to local neighborhoods and apartment complexes, so even if you're renting off property you could get hit by this.

A good rule of thumb is to look them up in the phone book, or ask a neighbor. We've also noticed that the flyers often don't have addresses. That's a big warning sign too!

There's Flippers, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns all in the immediate Disney area :) I prefer Flippers myself but you at least know there's some other pizza places in the area!

We were staying at BWV in Nov/Dec. and got flyers for pizza and chinese undeer our door almost every day. We just threw them but I never thought of them being a scam
