bobtail mix breed kittens?

My friend's cats have had some bobtailed and tailess kittens. I am thinking about adopting one. I saw on the internet that manx cats have some fatal health problems. I was wondering if the could be true in the mixed breeds as well. I have three kids and I worry about them getting too attached.

Manx are the best cats! I've had one and known several and never had any experience with Manx having more health problems then other cats. Maybe that's more of an inbreeding problem with show cats? Manx originally evolved naturally on the Isle of Man. Mother nature usually knows what she is doing.

I looked up "manx syndrome" and found several sources that say all the health issues associated with this syndrome are present in all cat breeds, in fact spina bifida which is basically what they say manx syndrome is is present in all life forms with spines.

My mom has a manx, he's awesome, I love that cat to pieces. He's this huge, burly cat with the loyalty of a golden retriever. He's my mom's "boyfriend" and protector-- he's there, at the foot of her bed, every night like clockwork. He's really good around my DD, very gentle, a bit standoffish but I think if someone tried to hurt her he'd tear their hand off.

He's happy and healthy, even after twice falling out a 3rd story window. (Moral of the story there-- window screens don't support the weight of a big ol' cat.)

We had one when I was growing up. Got him when I was 3 and he lived until I was 18. Best cat I ever had!!

We just adopted a 3 year old Manx and she is SUCH A sweetie! After only a month in our home she is already very protective. If one of us is out and then comes in the front door she jumps up and "growls" taking a protective stance. She is not totally happy unless she knows where both of us are. She has mastered the game of "fetch" which we play with a catnip stuffed mouse. All in all Manx are very doglike cats and are the perfect cats for dog lovers.

We have a manx we got from a shelter 4 years ago. He is the best cat. He was a lover from the day we got him - no wonder his name was Valentine at the shelter. We changed it to Billy since that seems to fit him perfectly. He's on the large side and has a very healthy appetite. He is great with my 11 month old neice and she loves to give him hugs. The other cats run away.

I have no idea what Billy's history is before we got him. He was probably a little over a year old. We did have another tailless cat that we got as a kitten. A stray cat around my mom's house in NC had kittens, 1 had a tail, one half a tail and the one I took had no tail. She seemed to have more of the problems related to "manx syndrome" or whatever they call it. She had urinary problems and suffered from sezuires which is what she killed her at 5 years old. I am thinking her problems were more related to her being "hillbilly" (which was actually her nickname) and not good genes or pre natal care in the stray cat momma.

I wasn't nervous about getting another tailless cat though and I am glad I did since Billy is the best cat anyone could ask for. He is healthy and happy and immediately got along with my other older cat when we brought him home for the first time 4 years ago. Also when I got a kitten 1 1/2 years ago he took him right in and they are all best buddies.

Thanks everyone. My DS cat ran away (his brother left the door open) and he misses her terribly. She was a himalayan and I guess couldn't find her way home or someone picked her up. We have had the whole neighborhood looking for her but it is like she disappeared into thin air. If I get him a kitten I want one that is healthy.

We got the kitten. He is very sweet a cuddly. He was an outside kitty so we had to treat him for fleas and worms right off, but now he if fine! He has already learned to use his litter box. He sleeps with DS each night!

Congrats! We lost our 17 year old little girl Manx, "Bobbie", the end of Feb. She died in my arms. She was a funny little thing. I really miss her.
