He’s gone for all intents and purposes he is gone. Disney board members are smart enough to know you can’t have two CEOs running a company. That is recipe for disaster.
Tell that to the press releases and interviews they did today where they said Chapek would report to the board and Chairman Bob Iger. Chapek is going to run the day to day without much from Iger but any major decisions will still have Iger's hand and the board for that matter until Iger is gone. This is a transition period not a complete change. Its not automatically Chapek's Disney tomorrow.
I'm hoping it will eventually be Josh D'amaro. He just needs a few years in his new role as president of WDW, and he may be ready.
This is how all corporations work. The board is typically pretty hands off and rubber stamps major projects. Boeing's chairmen was just made the President/CEO with someone else being put in the chairmen role, so that kind of shows who is really the boss in that relationship.
If you want to believe that stuff they put out to calm investors go ahead. If that was the actual case this would not have been planned to happen as it did. The board would not have planned this to happen right before the annual meeting, but after the proxy statements had been sent out with ballots asking for approval of Iger’s compensation for the coming year.

I think while Josh would be great in the role he’s better suited as the hands on type person with wdw. He’s not the suit type to be bean counting in Burbank.
I know of course some of it is fluff. The timing is the big surprise here. Everyone knew this would happen eventually. Why randomly today is the big question. The board had reportedly gone through several candidates. I do wonder how serious of an option Mayer was though.
