On the points chart under adventure season, it has points for preferred and for standard. What is the difference? I haven't noticed this before and it's not on any other resort.

Standard rooms are the most difficult to get , due to the lower points needed. The rooms overlook the entrance--parking lot, and tennis courts. The preferred view rooms overlook Swan and Dolphin, the pools, the canal, and the Boardwalk. Of the preferred rooms, the Boardwalk rooms are in very high demand. BWV is the only DVC resort with this tier on points because BWV is the only resort with such great views. The other resorts don't have any particularly good views to speak of.

We are thinking about renting points from someone for an early December visit and I was thinking about BWV. How difficult would it be to get a standard room then?

Pretty close to impossible unless they already made a reservation they are not going to use. Standard View often goes in the first month of availabilty even during slower times. December is not one of those times. December is extremely popular with DVC members.

I would make plans counting on paying for preferred points. For that matter, December fills up quick, so I would recommend you get some reservations made as soon as possible.
