thumbs down!:sad1:

We were *SO* looking forward to this night, as we dined here once before...maybe 2 years ago, and it stuck out in our minds as the best meal we had at WDW. I have done nothing but rave about it on this board, and secretly scoff at people who did not like it. Well, I apologize!:guilty:

We had reservations for 7 pm, but I had no trouble calling in the late afternoon and switching them to 8 pm. When I mentioned I wanted to sit in the lounge, the hostess let me know that those were first come, first serve, but they were "never busy in there" so it shouldn't be a problem. I thought that was odd.

We ordered the clam flatbread, the shake and bake fries, 1/2 dozen raw oysters and the crab nachos. I had a Zooberry Martini and a Cosmo. DH had Ketel One on the rocks with a splash of club soda, and followed that with a Guiness.

What a disappointment! Our first clue should have been the fact that it was empty. Friday night, from 7:30 pm to about 9 pm, the place had only a few tables seated. While our waitress was friendly and prompt, we did have our order come out incorrect...the raw oysters were omitted and we were brought a crabcake instead. We thought it was funny, because apparently they think it is "hip" to forego using trays and instead wheel the dishes out on a plastic push cart that reminds me of what the busboys used to haul dirty dishes around on when I waitressed at Chili's when I was 20.

We saw our food go by us once, then twice...and we would have stopped the food runner, except we were confused because the crab cake dish was on the pushcart and we did not order that, so we figured it was destined for another table. He passed us twice, looking for our waitress to ask where the food was to be delivered, I guess. Please remember there were only 2 other tables anywhere near us.

She took the cart from him and wheeled it over to us, and we mentioned that we did not order the crab cake. She kind of insisted we did, then said "Oh, yeah...the oysters" and took away the crab cake and came back with the oysters. By the way, we ordered a half dozen as they were $2.75 a piece and they were so puny and such a let down. I would say they were the size of a nickel...no exaggeration!

By the time we got our shake and bake fries, they were not fresh and crisp and hot. I have been raving about these fries to anyone and everyone on the DISboards for 2 years now, and I am afraid I have lost any credibility with anyone who has tried them. They were not flavorful like I remember, just fries with some parm grated on them. Eh.

The crab nachos were still the high point...but c'mon, we are talking about nachos here. No culinary artistry there!

I was really excited about the littleneck clam flatbread, but it was very salty and kind of dry, I thought it would benefit from some sort of sauce.

I have the "Zooberry" martini which is supposed to be blueberry infused vodka with a splash of lemon juice and a splash of simple syrup. To me, it tasted more like it was mixed with a juice. It was not strong at all.

I LOVVVVVED the cosmo I had there! It was mixed up (vodka and cointreau or grand marnier...I forgot), but intead of adding cranberry juice, they floated a cranberry foam on the top. WOW, that was the best drink I had all weekend.

At another point in our meal, we saw a server (not ours) return some dishes to the kitchen and complain to the chef that he was "making him (the server) look stupid" because I guess he took the orders out incorrect. The chef added some stuff to the plates and they went out again. I think they are definitely having some service issues.

My other issue...and I think I am going to email BZ about this...we sat in the lounge area...in a booth across from the bar. Anytime someone got up to leave the bar, or wanted to sit at the bar, the chairs made an AWFUL grating noise across the floor. I mean, seriously, it was nails on a chalkboard after awhile. I am not talking about a scarping sound...I am talking about a LOUD noise!

BTW, we walked by on Saturday night, around 8:30 pm and it was empty yet again...a few more table than Friday night, but certainly not the bustling, energetic restaurant I remembered. Such a shame, but I can honestly say we will not be dining at BZ again anytime soon.

Wow, I'm sad to hear this. You know it's one of my Faves too. When we were there last Nov., it was still bustling, but we didn't do the lounge area. We had such a great experience the first night, we cancelled another ADR to go back again so DH could get his Cantonese Lobster. I did have a letdown with the Bacon Butter Bucatini on a previous trip tho.

We were planning a pitstop on our Lounge Hopping Tour Thursday night & I hope we have better luck.

wow - we were actually thinking of eating here (the menu looks great) - but sounds like they were having an "off" night with you - sorry

We ate here two weeks ago and it was great ~ Shame you had a bad experience.

Leota-I really look forward to hearing your take on it this Thursday! I trust your opinion, and I am HOPING they were just having an off night. I really am! Now...maybe the lounge area is a little more "slack" than the dining room, but it seems there have been a few negative reviews recently. I did not want to believe them, and I gotta say, it was not a BAD experience. It was just "eh" and nothing exciting or anything that I would recommend.

If your experience is positive, then I will give it another try! You GOTTA have that cosmo. I don't have a problem paying $12 for a drink when it is so unique...just a clever twist on a traditional cosmo. Mmmm, I can taste it right now!

Hi Minniespal! I am glad to hear that. It was very hard for me to even post this review. I hate being negative and you will find that I am usually overly enthusiastic about restaurants at WDW. What did you have? Was your service excellent also?

Has anyone else sat in the lounge area and noticed the noise of the seats at the bar against the floor? Maybe it was one of those things that once it is noticed, it is all you can hear. It was driving me NUTS!:scared:

Wildernesslodgelover,
Thanks for the detailed review. Sorry you had a bad experiecne.
Blue Zoo is one of our favorites, but I have noticed a few bad reviews creeping onto the boards lately, so I wonder if this isn't a trend.
Still, we haven't had a bad expereince there yet, so we'll probably be going back in the Fall. I do understand what people are saying though, because even an 'eh' experience isn't appropriate for those prices.

The Cosmo is excellent!! I used to prefer the Kirkland when they first opened, but since then they've tweaked the recipe, and it isn't nearly as good as it was. Now it's just a very high end Collins.

Leota - I look forward to hearing about your experience there later this week.

And please, oh please, don't anyone tell me that they've changed the bread basket (too much)....

Rob

God forbid they touch that Basket, Robert!

Leota - I too am waiting on your review as we plan on going next trip and I need to get my ADR's in by the end of the month - really hoping to hear good things!!

What is Blue Zoo? I can't find it on the list of restaurants.:scared:

ok trying not to panick. I've got a reservation for 5pm on Friday May 11th. I'm not going to tell my husband about any of the bad reviews. We have not been here before and were looking forward to it. Oh well I am still looking forward to it and hoping that it turns out being a nice meal. I'm always willing to try a place once.

I will definately do some food reviews. BlueZoo has been a favorite of ours for a couple years & I hope it will continue to be as good as it has been for us so far. I hate to wish that someone had a bad night, but I do hope that's all it was.

Hmmm, that reminds me...we were never served a bread basket!

*shaking fist in the air and cursing the Blue Zoo*

diesel-Please don't panic! I am amazed at how some restaurants here get awful reviews, and then I go and LOVE the place. I think HMP's review really hit the nail on the head. BZ is TRYING to be upscale and trendy and funky, and when they succeed, well, all is right with the world. But when they fail...well, I'd rather be at Denny's eating a Grand Slam or Chili's eating a juicy burger. I agree with her, I respect food for what it is, and I hate a place that is pretending.

Robert-I am not familiar with the Kirkland, but dang, that cosmo is GOOOOD. I hope BZ is back in everyone's good graces by the Fall when you have your trip. Again, I cannot wait to hear Leota's opinions, because I do know that she "knows" food and will give a thorough review.

Maybe they might get a little more business if their host stand was friendlier. We were at Dolphin last week and came in from the pool area and just approached the host stand to catch a quick peek as we might return there for drinks later. I had to say hello to the two unfriendly girls at the host stand first and they barely responded verbally but their look spoke a thousand words! Isn't it funny that a restuarants first guest interaction is the front door host stand and they would have people like this working there! Needless to stay, we did not return as we were so put off by this. My husband usually give everyone the benefit of the doubt and usually is not phased by these things but he was even offended by their awful behavior. Never tried the restaurant, I'm sure it may be good but this just turned us off. Sorry so long, just needed to vent!

Thanks for your review. It's so disappointing when a place that you love, and recommend to others, lets you down.

It's not quite the same league as BlueZoo, but my DH and I were huge fans of Romano's Macaroni Grill when we'd visit my dad in Lakeland. We were thrilled when a Macaroni Grill finally opened in our little burb. We've been twice, and while nothing was terrible, there were several disappointments that make us wonder why we go there. Case in point, last visit the crab stuffed mushroom appetizer was not thoroughly cooked . . . the mushrooms were just raw. My son's macaroni and cheese came to the table without the cheese. Just a big bowl of plain pasta that we had to send back for the sauce. The server kept referring to basil as a spice (it's a herb, darn it!).

OK, I digress, but I sympathise with you. :)

Thanks for taking the time to post this review - so sorry to hear that it wasn't the kind of experience you were hoping for.

I too will be on the lookout for Leota's review - we've got ADRs for BlueZoo later this month and I want to be prepared.

If nothing else maybe we'll just end up at the bar for a Cosmo or two! :goodvibes

Well, I couldn't help chiming in as a former BZ lover who had a big let down last time there. I believe it was last November. My meal was the biggest rip-off for a vegetarian entree I've ever experienced. Firstly, they are one of the few restaurants around that doesn't have a veggie option on the menu, so you have to negotiate a meal with the waitress. I was in the mood for vegetables so I requested a sampling of the assorted side dishes they were serving with the entrees. What arrived was a large plate with a tiny scoop of sauted mushrooms and a smear of sweet potato puree. It was honestly not even the size of one side dish let alone what was supposed to be my entree. I should have refused to accept it but was not feeling argumentative. It tasted okay but really was about 3 bites and I was charged $18. My sister's martini was served warm and had to be sent back. The horribly rude waitress, Carol, had offered to add a few shrimp to my niece and her boyfriend's appetizer since they were sharing and insinuated it was a favor. Of course we were charged big bucks for those couple extra shrimp. I know we had other disappointments but since it was so long ago and I have middle-aged memory loss, I can't remember it all. I do know that no one thought their food was outstanding as on previous visits. The service was very poor. We'd actually had Carol before and she's got an attitude problem. Last time there was a man at the table next to us complaining to the manager about her because when he said he disliked the meal she tried to tell him he just wasn't used to this kind of sauce. She confided in us that she was on probation and might get fired because another patron was not happy with her . Not very professional of her to tell us this. We sort of hoped she had been fired but ended up with her a 2nd time. So... long story short...BZ is off our list.

Thanks for sharing, Kate. That was very unprofessional service, for sure. I always give a place another chance if just the service is bad...you can hope you don't get another whacky server. But when the food is bad, too...why bother?

Oybolshoi-Leota should be back in a few days, I can't wait to hear her report!

Maggi May-I know what you mean...there are just too many places to dine at to go back to a place that disappoints.

brisus-funny, when we were leaving, I wanted a few matchbooks for my collection...some to use and some to save. I mean, I wanted 2 or 3. I saw they were behind the hostess stand. So I said, "Excuse me, could I please have a few matchbooks?" The hostess didn't really look at me, but handed me one. I said, "Can I have another?" She seemed a bit disgusted with my request but turned, and without ever making eye contact with me, handed me one more.

I still want to know if anyone noticed the scraping barstool sounds! I bet if leota hears them she will smile and think of me!:goodvibes
