Blue Bayou....????

I am shocked by this as I find it's the opposite for us kiwis. We love America, Americans and Disneyland but find the worst part of the trip is always the food. Everything is so processed and the whole familly starts to feel a bit ill and sluggish after a day or two. (and POTC) experience.

Processed foods are common at large public centers such as Disneyland. Take a drive to one of the local restaurants outside the Disney area for far better food.

I took a friend from Australia to Disneyland a few years ago and she hated the food just like you! What I found though was that she preferred very bland, very plain foods. Sandwiches only on plain white bread, never any kind of fancy rolls etc. Hated any food that had more than just salt and pepper spices. She loved the food in England which I could not stand. Too bland, flavorless and just blah!!

I really do not eat any fancy meals at Disneyland. Too expensive, not very good, crowded, noisy etc. We always drive a few miles away to a nice restaurant for far better meals.

This year the girls (age 11) want to go to Benihanas instead of a Character meal or other Disney meal. Theres one about 4 miles away so thats what we will do. They're all over the world and always a fun time and good food.

hay the fruit is good but but don't take away everything. I hated how much they changed some foods I get that every ones on this we have to eat healthy craz an thats ok im starting to eat smaller portions an different items that i normally wouldn't
hell my son wanted to try yogurt I cant stand that stuff but he likes it (Trix of course he likes it)
He eats better then me an yes im trying to find a few things to change but im on vacation if I want to find something fried I should be able to. Just like I should be able to find fruit too.
(every place salad or soup or cole slaw was offered i took fruit)

ok i say they need to have just as many offers for healthy eaters as us fast food fried eaters(potatoes an fried chicken an corn most of my child hood its what my dad ate its what he made for me. I cant help it. an salad's are so bland to me" *ducks*

(off my soap box lol an my dh says with 70 left each adult we can do bb if I want lol if he got the stake an i got Mc we would share an humm any one know if they might mix the kids meal if requested?

Mac an chess with the chicken (he disliked with a passion those pasta an marinara sauce they had last year)

I was just looking at the menu for the BB on the link that's posted on this site for restaurant menu's updated as of 2/09 and I don't see the Monte Cristo sandwich that people talk about or the cookie boat. Has the menu changed recently? I'm not sure anyone in my party would want the Monte Cristo sandwich but I know we wanted to try the cookie boat dessert.

Went there last thursday; had the steak & lobster and I thought it was quite good. Lobster was a little on the small side but the flavors were excellent and the service was some of the best I've had yet.

We noticed that they have removed the appitizers from the menu and it is entrees only now.

Costs too much and was more that Goofy's Kitchen.

I have sensory issues and celiac. I am on a no wheat, rye, barley and oats diet plus can not have soy or eggs. My medication is no grapefruit. Also I need to avoid chocolate, fizzy drinks, caffeine, and dairy.

I told the chef no gluten and little or no soy. I got chicken, veggies, and a pile of plain rice noodles. Thank God for Ketchup as I made a taste dish out of the noodles. I had to come up with chocolate sauce on ice cream for dessert as the chef had nothing to make until I asked about the ice cream. No sprig of mint or other decoration, plain.

Plaza Inn and same request. I got 4 chicken drumettes that were plain looking and rather bland looking plus skin. they were delicious though. I had two scoops of mashed taters but could have had taters and veggies. Also a drink was add for a total of $14.

$14 for chicken, taters and veggies versus $26 plus tax, drink, and tip for chicken, plain rice noodles and veggies.

At Goofy's Kitchen I got me unlimited hand made waffles and pancakes because of my special diet. Unlimited soft serve ice cream, taters, veggies, lox, cannot eat eggs but they were there, fresh fruit, ham, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. I could barely move from two heaping plates of food and dessert. I would rather have the unlimited feast for less money.

It is not that romantic to me and is just a building that is themed, big deal. I live for food not theming and Ariel's Grotto is better food, same price and nice theming plus entertainment.

Never look at the County Health department records by the way.:scared1:

Hmmmm... I'm sensing a trend here! :rotfl:

Us, too. Been there twice. First time, for dinner, the food ranged from "eh" to "pretty good." Service, while very pleasant and polite, was rushed. The second time, for lunch, was very good. My Tesoro Island chicken was good, not fabulous; but DD's ribs were delicious! The rolls, gumbo, salad, and cookie boat were also wonderful. Service was excellent, but that's partly because we were there for the first lunch seating at 11:30 a.m. (and got a great waterside seat!).

I'd go again in a heartbeat, but not because I'm expecting amazing food! Of course, there's places I love that have no ambiance whatsoever, but the food rocks. Like a dingy little strip mall teriyaki place that has the best Chinese food EVAR.

Have to agree with this. Last time we were there, they were serving prime rib and it was very good. But, we go for the ambiance. Since we go during August it is refreshing to sit by the water and watch the boats go by.

We definitely go there for the ambiance, and only once in a while. Out the 3 or 4 times we've been, the only thing I actually remember eating there was the cookie boat. Everything else was pretty ho-hum, but I want to go back for that cookie boat! And I'd wait for a table seat. Last time we were pretty close to the entrance doors which kind of took away from the vibe.

I have only been three times but I have to say that I did not find the food very good at all!
The first time I ordered the Monte Cristo and was really looking forward to it. I found it to be heavy and greasy and just not to my liking.
I did enjoy the wedge salad though. I really liked the dressing!
The second time my husband ordered the Tesoro Chicken and we did the split plate and he said the chicken was disgusting.
I enjoyed the sides!
The third time I went with my friend and as we are both vegetarian, we split the portobello mushroom dish and it was just okay.
We did order the Trio of Creme Brulee though and they were absolutely heavenly.
I really enjoy the atmosphere at Blue Bayou and I think everyone should go at least once for the experience but definitely not for the food!
We may try to get in on a walk in basis to try the Cookie Boat this trip!

I'm not very impressed with BB's food and personally don't think it's worth the price anymore, but whatever. This restaurant is all about atmosphere, and Disney knows it.

These days, I'd much rather go to Cafe Orleans. Sure, it doesn't have PotC boats sailing by, but the food is YUMMY!

Yeah, it definitely is all about the atmosphere. I've been there at least three times and the food is sliding downhill. It's not that it's bad, it's that what's on the menu is not as interesting as what I'm seeing at Cafe Orleans or Carnation Cafe, etc. I would gladly pay $35+ for something that sounds really tasty but the current menu is just not doing it for me.

But it IS so fun to sit in the cool, lantern-lit patio, watch the boats go by and listen to the banjo plinking in the back while the "crickets and frogs" sing softly in chorus.

We ate there last week for the first time. We'd wanted to on our last couple of visits because of the location in PotC. Expensive, as we knew, but the food was good. My wife and daughter had the crab cakes which were not bad. On the waitress's recommendation I had the short ribs which were excellent, a very pleasant surprise.

Very fast service. I guess they wanted to run people through there pretty quickly. We got there at 11:30 at the beginning of lunch. We won't eat there frequently due to cost, but will definitely hit it again.

I noticed that too, a few months ago. But I've heard the menus on this site aren't always the most accurate. :flower3: The one at Allears.net lists it under the lunch menu only.

We also must be in the minority, because we love Blue Bayou! I can't think of a time we've been to DL that we didn't go. It's our special 'thing' there.

I always get the chicken, and he gets... the steak, I think. Only once was it undercooked (to his liking), and they promptly made him a new one.

We love(d?) the wedge salad... it's not there anymore? :( The potatoes are also excellent.

We always get great service, so that's never a problem, and once they even replaced his whole plate after his little sister spilled his Coke all over it. (And if anything, we've been checked on too often by the water people! :rotfl:)

Oh dear you sound just like me - I have a severe gluten intolerance too.

I am so glad to hear that they had rice noodles for you. I am going to ask for that next time.

A word of warning though - Ketchup, ice cream and bottled sauses usually have wheat maltodextrin in them. Sausages and hot dogs always have thickeners in them and pre-prepared mashed potatoes sometimes do too.

Also watch out for anything that has glucose as it is often derived from wheat.

Did they make you waffles and pancakes with gluten-free flour? That is so awesome. I am def going to try that on my next visit. Did you need to ring ahead or did they have it on hand?

I find it such a hassle trying to find something satisfying to eat when travelling because even most french fries and potato chips have the dreaded maltodextrin.

Sorry for going so off topic:angel:

I am right there with you!!! We also LOVE Blue Bayou!!!! Food has always been great for us, and the wedge salad is/was awesome!!!

Our family of six (three adults, one "tween", two kids) ate there in March and we had a fine meal. It wasn't five-star but I don't think they claim to be.... It was decent enough, we adults and our oldest son split plates (this was before the ultra-controversial rate hike to do so) and in the end we all shared a cookie boat. We left full and happy and the kids loved the ambiance.
We have talked about it and we probably won't do it again next time, but not because we didn't enjoy it....because there are so many other restaurants to experience that we haven't tried yet! No reason to get into a "rut" when we only go every three years......;)

We are only going this trip since we have 7 people who have never been. Otherwise you can skip it. I would rather eat at CO! Also I am not sure what they did to the MC but I agree...certainly not as good as it once was :(

I have never reacted to ketchup and Lays potato chips and Fritos are gluten free. Many foods now are gluten free. I have never in the pat 6 months had a reaction except to the coconut sorbet at Yamabuki and the usual dairy, soy, egg and chocolate reactions.

I make sure I only eat where the chef speaks English and understands what Gluten is. Pico de gallo is thickened with gluten. You never know but the secret to the parks is knowing brands like can you eat Edy's/Dreyer's ice cream or Heinz ketchup? I know brands and know Fruitibu is safe as is any hot dog sold in the park that is not premade.

You do not have to tell them you are gluten free but for the best service you should make sure you tell them of any dietary limitations so that they can have gluten free items in stock. I reacted to the dairy and pushing my mother in the wheelchair. Nothing like pushing someone after ice cream. I did not have a reaction at Goofy's and they made me gluten free waffles and pancakes. All meats, ice cream, veggies and fruit are gluten free. They make the omelettes right in front of you. If you are still confused after talking to the chef then they will walk you through the buffet.

I love the Blue Bayou but for the price I could get food elsewhere for that price. I eat at the parks for the food and price. I have only about $300 to $400 for the rest of the month as discretionary income at most and if I eat at the parks it will be Coke Corner or probably Taste Pilot as I can eat there 3 times for the price of Blue Bayou or eat at Big Thunder all I can eat for the same price or even Ariel's would be cheaper.

I am single and almost 50 years going to parks so yawn to Blue Bayou.

We just ate there for lunch last week. I have to say that it was very disappointing. We got a great table right next to the water but it took half the meal for our eyes to adjust to the darkness enough to see each other, let alone the boats going by. So the ambiance factor didn't kick in until then. And the food was barely edible for the most part. I enjoyed my salad and DH said the jambalaya was pretty good. But I've had better crab cakes out of my grocer's freezer. For the exorbitant fee they are charging I would expect better. In fact, this was true of all the food we ate at Disneyland. I expect to pay Disney prices, but from eating at WDW I also have come to expect some quality. The best meal we had was at the Taste Pilot counter service in CA, and that's not saying much.
