As several pps have said the reasons for lower mf's are a combination of the smaller land footprint, shared front desk facilities, limited amenities and increased units/points sold. No different than in a condominium the expenses are shared by the owners. So fewer expenses divided by more owners means lower fees.
As for the dvc rep's rudeness i suspect that since he probably gets asked that question a lot with no potential for a sale/lead that he just decided rude was the way to go. no excuse imo but that's life!
