DD is 14 and her blonde hair is getting darker. She wants to lighten it or get highlights, but I am worried about that since she is in the pool so much (she on the swim team). Would something like sun-in help? Any suggestions?? I am not a blond, so I'm clueless!

I have highlights, and the pool doesn't bother them - just use a clarifying shampoo. I recommend highlights over color for blondes - costs more, but looks more natural, and lasts a lot longer. Do they still even make sun-in?

My DD 13 has blonde hair that is getting darker. It took me three trips to different stores before I could find Sun-In. I ended up finding it at Walgreens. Anyway, my daughter used it several times and her hair is definitely lighter, but it has an orange-ish tone. I knew this would happen if she had dark hair, but she doesn't. I think it looks very unnatural, and I don't want her using it again.

I had orange hair from Sun-In when I was in school, way back in the stone ages, and I was also blonde. I would get it done at a salon to make sure it looks good. I would not use Sun In.

I was a lighter blonde when I was younger and so is DD13. I have been told by multiple stylists that 'sun in' is very bad for your hair. And if you use it, you have to wait for it to grow out before getting any other coloring or chemical type treats to your hair. I am not a stylist, but have been told this by more than 1 licensed stylist and have no reason to believe that they were being anything less than honest with me. I would go for actual coloring (whether do it yourself or at a salon) but I wouldn't use the 'sun in'. Best of Luck to you. :goodvibes

I would definately do highlights. I know Fantastic Sam's usually has coupons for $24.99 for 8 foil highlights. Another great tip for swimmers is to spray on some leave in conditioner before getting in the pool or take a shower. This allows the hair to soak up the leave in conditioner or clorine free water and then the chlorine water can not soak in.

I always had great luck just using lemon juice on my hair. Just buy a huge generic bottle of lemon juice & dump enough on wet hair to saturate it. If I had the time I would sit out in the sun & let the sun dry it; if I had to go somewhere I would just leave it in my hair for awhile, then rinse it out.

It definitely works--I went to Myrtle Beach on vacation for one week & did that every day. When I came back no one could believe how much lighter my hair was. I would recommend trying that route since she is so young, at least you don't have to worry about orange hair! You can't go wrong with the price either!

Thanks! I am pretty clueless about highlights, just remembered my friends using Sun In back when we were kids. I have red hair, so the last thing I wanted was to make it lighter!

Well Strawberry blonde is beautiful IMO, but...
I could see where if you weren't very very careful you could end up looking like Carrot Top. LOL. :scared1:
