blisters

In 2015, first day wore old comfortable broken in Coach sneakers, wound up with serious blisters on the bottoms of both feet (across balls of feet near toes). Saved by moleskin that I brought with me. Placed it right over the blisters, otherwise I would not have been able to walk. Those sneakers were thrown in Disney resort garbage can. In 2016, decided to try something different. Used stick deodorant on my feet (bottoms, toes). Worked great, no blisters at all. Also had slip-on skechers and lace-up skechers to alternate. Also had extra pair of socks in my park bag that I would change halfway through the day (during an indoor show). My sneakers and feet always smelled like the deodorant. If it rained, I would change into my crocs brand open sandals (always in my park bag) so my sneakers would stay dry. Keeping your feet dry from sweat or the elements is key. I still had moleskin in my bag but I'm glad I did not have to use it

Glad you are planning your blister-prevention strategy now! One of our family members got them so bad in a single day that her feet were bleeding into her sneakers. This was a young, athletic person who had good footwear and was used to long hours on her feet! She was pretty much immobilized for a day, or would have been had there not been wheelchairs to rent. Lesson learned about how critical it is to pay attention to a hot spot as soon as you feel one.

All advice so far has been great. Hope you find best solution for you and have a magical trip.

I haven't gotten a blister at Disney by taking the following steps.
1. For several months prior to going I avoid pedicures and walk around barefoot as much as possible to build up callouses
2. Before going to the parks I coat both feet with bandaid friction block or similar product..between toes too.
3. I wear moisture wicking socks and breathable mesh sneakers (Vionic for me).
4. Reapply, change socks and shoes anytime we take a break at the hotel

Just to reiterate some of the above: (What I wore last week, Jan. 2017)

Spend the money and get 2 nice pairs of walking shoes/sandals. (I wore Ryka and Keen)
Get a few pairs of nice quality walking/hiking socks. (I wore Fits)
Get a pair of nice insoles (I used Superfeet)

No sore feet and we did some walking! 3 parks in one day and we walked to the back of AK, the back of DHS, and all the way around the World Showcase!
What kind of Ryka's do you wear? How do you like them? Thanks!

I LOVE the Ryka shoes. I actually wear a wide and they make most of their styles in a wide. I have 3 different pairs! My favorites are the Dynamic 2.5. My daughter also wore a pair of the Dynamics. They are a regular width and I just wear a thinner sock with them. I have worn them on 2 Disney trips. This past trip I also wore a pair of the Ryka Shifts but I took the memory foam insoles out. The memory foam just did not give enough support. I have a pair of Grafik and I took the insole out of those and put in the Shifts. That worked great. I have also used the Superfeet insoles.

I get horrible blisters while there and only there and keep trying different things. One thing that has helped with the blisters on my toes was to wear two pairs of socks. The first sock I bought the Injinji socks (the ones that your toes are separated like a glove) and then wore another pair over them. Feels kind of weird at first but it worked! No more blisters on my toes. Still trying to find the solution for my heals though.

Totally agree with ktlm. I discovered Body Glide on these boards. Have not had a single blister since. I also have weird toes, so I put Bandaid brand blister block bandaids on my baby toes. Haven't had any feet problems in years!

FWIW, I put mole skin on any potential problem areas with my kids feet and make them powder their feet before we leave for the parks each morning. I will also quiz them on their feet each day and do foot checks after we eat lunch. You've really got to get ahead of any problems with your feet and the feet of your family members.

I feel like i'm an infantry platoon leader, but its necessary to keep everyone from having foot problems and ruining a day at Disney.

I have a few tricks that work for me:
  1. apply Body Glide all over each foot
  2. if wearing shoes that require socks, wear Wright socks. Preferably the double layered ones. Reduces friction.
  3. if wearing shoes that require socks, wear a pair of shoes that breathe. Running shoes with mesh, for example, so when your feet sweat, the sweat has somewhere to go.
  4. check your feet during the day. If a spot seems to be red, apply a Band Aid blister block band aid to that area. Reapply Body Glide. Put on new pair of socks (if you're wearing socks).

I use an anti-chafe gel made by monistat (Chafing Relief Powder Gel, I found it in the feminine products aisle at Target). It comes in a tube, I carry it into the parks to reapply as needed wherever I'm being rubbed (heel of shoe, side of sandals, around bra, etc). No more blisters!

So I feel like I'm missing something, but isn't moleskin totally sticky on the back? If you have an active blister and put it on top, how on Earth do you get it off without losing all that skin???

It is sticky on the back, but in my experience, the adhesive isn't so strong that it pulls the skin off a blister. Every time I've done it, the skin is intact when the mole skin is removed.

I walk 11K steps every day, so I've picked up a few tips here and there.

Clear deodorant works just about as well as body glide and has a dual purpose. :)

Also, as a runner, I've discovered leukotape. Buy it from Amazon. It is thinner than moleskin, but works just as well and can be layered on hot spots, and it works about as well as duck tape on non-human items (broken badges, replacing zipper pulls, mending suitcases, etc.) too. I carry some with me when I go anywhere these days.

Wear socks made of synthetic material.

Shoes matter. Make sure your toes wriggle but your heel doesn't slide around and make sure there aren't any pressure points on the shoe. (This is particularly important if you have high arches and/or wide feet and/or have that bump on top of your feet. I am blessed with all of the above.)

Wear shoes that aren't dead. . .that is, there should still be some support in the sole, even if you are in minimalist shoes.

Trim your toenails. This keeps nail rubbing down.
