Blah PTO Fundraiser

Nothing could be better than the spring fundraiser we had last year. We had a Knowledge-a-Thon. Each grade was given a list of 100 questions and answers of things they had learned throughout the year. You had about 6 weeks to study the questions. During this time you also gathered pledges, either a flat amount, or like 5 cents for every question you got right. Then, there was one day set aside. Parents volunteered to be question readers, we had T-shirts and ice cream donated, and the whole day was spent on Knowlege-a-Thon. There were no expenses incured by the school, everything was gotten by donations. We raised $10,000 when all was said and done. That is my kind of fundraiser!

My DD came home on Friday with not one but TWO fundraisers. The Entertainment Book and the wrapping paper book. I could not believe they are doing two at the same time! :confused3
We are going to do 3 at the same time in November. We're doing a Readers Digest catalog o' junk, a greeting card sale and a holiday flower sale.

The reason that we're doing so much at once is to 1) provide variety, and 2) because the teachers say that it is too much work for them to collect orders and checks more than 1X per quarter. So, in order to raise the money we want to pay for field trips and to buy some new playground equipment, we will be having 3 sales at the same time. In March, we'll be selling Easter candy and spring flowers at the same time for this reason, too.

I prepare our monthly PTA newsletter so I'm pretty plugged in on what is discussed. You don't have to feel obligated to buy everything. If you want an Entertainment book, buy one and skip the wrapping paper. If you want both, great. If Grandma wants just wrapping paper, that's ok. Maybe your school's teachers are as opposed to helping the PTA raise funds as ours are and they try to limit their exposure to it.

I sat on the board for a local baseball league for many years, we have done it all and yes it is a PITA but we made 20K selling chocolate.

I agree with the poster that talked about the "prep rally" they give to the kids. That is what bugs me especially since our district has a "no door to door" policy the kids are all pumped and we are the ones that have to drag it to work and hope we are the first ones in as all the schools do similar/same things.

I have always wondered if instead of fundraising the PTO said - okay, here is the deal, we need to raise $20K, there are 500 kids in this school, every kid is responsible for $40. You have until Dec to pay your bill at $10 per month, babysit, take out the trash, hit up your Grandmother, whatever it takes......Thank you for your support.

Give the kids stickers, cheap prizes, extra recess etc. when they come in with their monthly payment.......... Lord knows I spend more than that on wrapping paper and don't even let me near the cookie dough :teeth:

Just a thought..................

I am going to the PTO meeting tonight to discuss fundraisers :stir: , if you never see another post from me you will know it didn't go well :rolleyes1

Where is this place????? We drive over the hill periodically to shop.

it's in benicia. if you like i'll see if i can find out what date they are doing the fall sale (usualy in early december).

I'm not a parent, I don't really get hit up to buy stuff at work ( work nights), but I personally like the mag subscrption FR that my nephew has done in past. I just renew my Nursing mag subscrptions thru him as I'm going to renew anyway. This isn't catalog of junk one this is strictly mags. I want to say readers digest is parent org but not sure.
