Hiya

I was wondering if anybody can tell me about black friday?

We will be in the USA for it in 2007 and are wondering what its about etc.?

Also we are thinking of staying in the mall hotel the night before (florida mall hotel) is this a good idea

any help really appreciated

I don't understand, lol?
Do you mean a friday the thirteenth? Or the evil-shopping day?

Shopping day after thanksgiving.

Kinda like watching a debate on the DIS. LOL!

Stores open wickedly early (from about 5am to 8am isthe starting range). Parking lots full in major shopping areas by about 8am if not sooner.

Staying at the mall gives you dibs on a parking space :).

I go for the free Disney snowglobes at JC Penney. A little iddy biddy cheap globe--but free and DISNEY nonetheless. We have a little family collection going. (though they do seem to be getting cheaper over the years).

On Thanksgiving--IF you were interested in shopping on BF--you can pick up a newspaper and there are a ton of sales ads.

However--for the most part--except for the freebie incentives...they have sales going on all the time and the "doorbusters" are just loss leaders--sometimes it can be really good stuff (Macy's had this pack of nice towels that sold out really quick one year) and sometimes it is stuff on the "who would by this?" radar.

It is called "black" friday b/c it is typically the day when retailers are finally operating in the black and profiting--running in the red for the year up until that day.

If there is a Fry's then run there they had Ipods for like $20 for a shuffle last time

There are some Black Friday Websites that find out the sales in advance and post them like a couple of weeks before the sales. Some manufacturers get mad at this and even sometimes give out bogus information or so I am told. I have never encountered this and it has been a great help to plan my shopping strategy. My son loves to go (go figure he is 23) his gf does not so he comes with me and my husband. I think it is the thrill of the hunt! IF you go to to the Budget Board and do search for Black Friday you will find the websites but they are not up and running until maybe the end of October.

DH and I shop on Black Friday...:cool1: I use Gotta Deals as my source. The "deals" last year were not as great as in previous years, except electronics.

Now...I must warn you that some stuff is through "rebates", esp. electronics, like computers. So you should definetly read up on policies since you are out of the country.

I use gotadeal.com too. This and gottadeal are my 2 favorite sites. Not only are they good for black friday they are good year round. They have a freebies board and contests and deals board.Between Dis and there I have no time for anything else.:)

I love Black Friday :goodvibes

Although no one else in family gets up with me.

they lose out!

I didn't get to do Black Friday last year b/c we were at Disney and Friday was our last day. I am looking forward to it this year! :sunny:

My family has no desire to go w/ me, which is fine. That way I don't have to worry about anyone else. I get up, go get the early bargins, (Disney Store has good sales) and head back home and go back to bed for a while.

If we can swing the $, I think we will split our Christmas shopping up between our beach trip in a couple of weeks and Black Friday. Myrtle Beach has lots of neat and different stores at Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach w/ unique stuff.

The history teacher in me reads this post thinking, why would someone want to come and "celebrate" the stock market crash??????

Yes, it started on a Thursday but continued through the following week.

Wrong "Black Friday". It is a term to state that it is day the stores are out of the red, aka turning a profit.

I've stayed in the Florida Mall Hotel a few times - really nice place. Assuming that by Black Friday, we are talking about the shopping day after Thanksgiving, keep in mind that the "super-duper-I can't believe it's that cheap" bargains are usually found at "big box" stores, not at the stores in the mall. Most of the big boxes have branches in that neighborhood, and the Flordia Mall Hotel is by far the nicest place to stay, but you will either have to drive or go on longish walk (in an area not designed for walking) to get to the super sales.

I'm starting to wonder how it's worth it for the retailers. I am thinking the idea is to lure people into the store with some big bargains and get them to buy other things in the store. The couple times I have went, and everything I read about it at other times tells me people go in for the couple sale items and leave.

Last year I just went in that evening and looked for what was left. Turns out there were lots of the major slae items left. I'm sleeping in for now on.

I LOVE Black Friday (it's where my 2nd tag came from). I think staying at Florida Mall the night before would be awesome. But like the pp said, many of the big bargains are at the free standing stores like Target and Toys R Us and Walmart. Now, I know that there is a Target and a Toys R Us right there at the Florida Mall, on the outskirts of the parking lot. So you could go ahead and stay at the Florida Mall hotel, the night before, scour the newspapers and decide where the best deals are and what you definately can't live without getting and start there because the best deals sell out immediately. Then you can go from there. Head back to the mall early (I usually start at a store like Toys R Us or Brandsmart) and head to the mall to shop and am usually all done by 9am... then you have a room to go back to to rest for awhile. And then you can go back out to the mall later to finish your shopping at the stores that didn't have doorbuster sales but rather sales all day long.

Wow, that's sounds like a great idea... I wonder if dh would go for it?

We went to walmart first last year and got there at 4 a.m. and there was a ton of people there already. I froze but we got everything we wanted. That was the first time we did Walmart on Black friday and I will never again. People were to crazy. I'd rather stick to Target and Toys r us. There were good deals from Best buy but you have to be at best buy at 10 the night before to even hope to get any of the good things.
