BL Summer Challenge 2009

Morning Loosers!

I'm delighted to be your coach this week. A big thanks to Dona for switching with me :grouphug:

So.........Let's Talk FISH :fish::fish::fish::fish:

As I've reviewed my WW tracker, I've found that the weeks I had the biggest loss ALWAYS involved a couple of fish/seafood meals. We know 'they' tell us to eat it, but do you? I don't cook it, but it's pretty much available on any regular (non-fast-food) restaurant menu. I LOVE talapia (poor man's orange roughy) and can find that at Applebees and Chili's for example. And grilled shrimp is available a lot of places too. I think salmon and tuna are just OK...don't seek them out anyway...but they are also easy to find.

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

I know when I travel my seafood consumption skyrockets, as a matter of fact in September I'll be having some every day on the cruise ship. There will be shrimp and scallops available to me every day...YUM!

Now I just need to make a better effort to work it into my diet 'routinely'.:thumbsup2

As a side note: I can get back in the swimming pool now! :yay: Very happy about that!

It's a bit of a milestone for me at today's weigh in. The -.6 takes me right to the top of my healthy weight range. I have been looking forward to this for a long, long, long time. I am not done yet, but am pleased to be at a healthy BMI for the first time in years.

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

I am a vegetarian and do not eat fish. I eat flax seed most mornings on my oatmeal and sometimes hemp seed as well which also contain the Omega 3 oils.

Good morning, losers!

Thank you donac for being our coach last week and thank you Jackie for being coach this week. :goodvibes

A big congratulations to you corinnak for reaching a big goal this week. You so totally :rockband:

I am a samer again this week. I actually feel glad not to be a gainer so guess my flex points and everything worked just the way it was supposed to last week-end. I want to be a loser again. It's my responsibility, I own it and I am going to do it!

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

I love fish but don't get to eat it much unless we go out. DH won't eat fish of any kind. DS will eat fish sticks but that is about it. I do love halibut on the grill, shrimp, scallops. I'm like you, Jackie, salmon is okay, depends on how it is prepared. One thing I like to do it get some cooked shrimp when it is on sale and have it with a little cocktail sauce. I just get enough for one serving -- a nice little dinner on a hot night.

I take flax seed oil or fish oil capsules some time. For those of you on WW, I just read that capsules don't cut it for the healthy oil goal. I need to reread my plan documents anyway and try and figure that out.

Have a great day, losers!

Happy Friday everybody!
I'm happy that I am down 1.3lbs this week, which is exactly what I had gained last week. This summer challenge has been a yo-yo for me, but this week I feel like I made some better choices and will carry forward. I want to get a loss 2 weeks in a row and I can do it.:goodvibes

Thanks to Dona for coaching last week, and for doing the COW. :cool1:
Thanks to Jackie for being this weeks coach. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the slow cooker suggestions. I'm happy to say the BBQ pulled pork was a success for DH & I. DD7 said yuck, and DD4 didn't even want to taste it. But that's okay, since they often don't want meat.

So.........Let's Talk FISH :fish::fish::fish::fish:

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

I am not a big seafood fan. I like most white fish, and that's it. We go in cycles where we eat it once a week and then not at all for a while.

It's a bit of a milestone for me at today's weigh in. The -.6 takes me right to the top of my healthy weight range. I have been looking forward to this for a long, long, long time. I am not done yet, but am pleased to be at a healthy BMI for the first time in years.

Congrats! That must feel great! :cool1:

I gained this week which was expected due to my little vacation and my birthday. I am fine with it and am moving forward towards a loss this coming week.

Congrats to Corinnak on getting to a healthy weight range...it is soooooooo far off for me that right now I am just focused on putting one foot in front of the other.

QOTD: The only time I will eat fish is if it is deep fried and dipped in tarter sauce....since this doesn't work so well on WW I haven't had it in a long time. I do take a multi vitamin daily but haven't checked it for Omega 3

As far as Harry Potter goes I was never really interested but my kids and Mom read them and we always saw the movies, mostly because they would come out on the day of my sons birthday and it was always Harry Potter's birthday too- kind of odd. I was waiting for the movies to be done to read the books and I thought this was the last one so my son lined them all up for me to read so I guess I will anyway.
Fish. Well I work at Albertsons at the meat counter so I should eat more seafood lol. I'm pretty picky about it really it has to be really fresh and on sale if it's fish, if it's frozen then it has to be just thawed and a really good price. Frozen weighs more. Shrimp has to be the big (16-20 ct.)freshwater or the white shrimp as I have no patience for peeling. In the summer though we get fresh salad shrimp and that's great if it's on sale. Crab I'll get once every couple months. I'll pack up the broken pieces (the king crab) and sell them 1/2 off, if they don't sell then I will buy it and add to clam chowder, omelet, etc. Dungeness I'll get generally once or twice a year when it's really a great buy.
A great recipe for the Jumbo freshwater shrimp is just throw them in the skillet (olive oil) with lime juice and that miced garlic-really really good. I like Tilapia too- a good recipe for that is to mix equal parts of rasberry vinegar, honey, and olive oil. Marinate in that and bake in it. You can throw in a little dry mustard too.
Oh- I take fish oil with my multivitamin if it's a day where I haven't added flax to my breakfast smoothie. And I just learned to fillet! This will open up a whole new ball game for me.

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

I love Salmon, Perch and Catfish. I love to bake the Fish with Butter and Seasoning and pepper

Hi all! Sorry again that I haven't been around much. We were having computer troubles.... fortunately it was just a bad router and nothing big.

I lost 2 lb this week (of the 2.4 I gained last week). Not too bad considering that Aunt Flo is in the house.

I am just STRUGGLING with these last 10 pounds. I get within 7-ish pounds of goal and then I gain.... I get there again and I have a gain. My Mom says that I am thin enough and my body is trying to tell me that, but I strongly disagree. I think I just need to shake things up to lose these last (now 9) pounds. I'm just not sure how. I eat within my points. I eat pretty clean (not much processed or packaged foods). I exercise 5-6 days a week (although I could up the number of minutes and intensity, but I'm not sure how long I could continue doing that). Any suggestions??

QOTD: Fish?

We don't eat as much as we should. DD is going to be a Marine Biologist and REFUSES to eat anything that comes from the sea (including seaweed). So I don't make it much because it is a pain in the neck to cook multiple meals. Plus the cost of most seafood stops me in my tracks. DH and I like most fish and seafood.... it just isn't something I work into the menu very often.

I did make a nice frozen shrimp/basmati rice stir fry thing recently that was tasty with low points. DD had chicken that night. And occasionally we (DS and I) make salmon cakes... we all (except DD) like those a lot and I have figured out a way to really lighten the recipe. Thanks for asking.................P

Hi everyone. Congrats on all the losses this week.

QOTD I love fish and don't eat it as much as I should. I have been trying to make sure that I get my omega 3 in every day. It is supposed to help ease arthritis along with vitamin D.

I'm in the same boat as you. I lost 25 pounds and I think on one level I worked pretty hard and changed a lot to do that. I don't want to be skinny. Honestly I've lived too many years making excuses and justifying being overweight, I know that but I'm just not the body type to be skinny and I don't have the lifestyle to keep the weight off. I LIKE food. But I do want to lose 10 more pounds. I want to seal the deal with my back problems and just think I would look better with those pounds off. I also want to be a good influence on my son who is obese. I know I'm capable of losing more weight, just have lost some motivation. And yep family members don't help. I mean it's nice they support me and compliment me on my weight loss but when someone says something like well, you've lost enough now, surely you'll stop... doesn't help. I keep losing a few pounds then gaining them back, it's ridiculous.

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

Yes, we love fish and eat them on a regular basis. My favorites to eat are Tilapia and Salmon.

pjlla- how old is your daughter that doesn't eat fish? I am a marine biologist (or at least I was before the kids) and I haven't me a group of people that eat more fish than they do:lmao: If she is younger, she may change her mind about it after she works in the field a while.

QOTD: Do you eat fish and if so, what's your favorite? And if not, are you taking any kind of supplement that provides those essential oils?

No extra supplements. I don't eat fish as much as I would like to....it is just too expensive. I love mahi mahi grilled with lemon and a little butter.

Since you are a marine biologist, Angie, I am guessing that it isn't mahi mahi that you aren't supposed to eat because it was overfished -- which fish is like mahi mahi that you are supposed to stay away from? I think all fish tastes good with lemon and butter.

We are a quiet group here today. I hope that everyone is having fun in the sun! :sunny:

Looks like everyone is having a busy Saturday. I'm surprised how long it's taken me to make it 'over here' today!

Today's quetion (or 'this weekend's' question) relates to dining out. I've discovered to ASK FOR WHAT I WANT. After looking at a menu, you have a good idea of how a restaurant is able to prepare different dishes. So if meat or pasta entree isn't listed on the menu prepared they way you would want it, but you do see OTHER items prepared that way....ask for what you want.

QOTD: Do you ask questions of your server and have menu items 'tweeked' to fit in with your food plan or are you only willing/able to ask to have 'bad' things (french fries) substitued with 'good' things (fruit). How far are you willing to go to get what works for you?

I learned an interesting lesson when dining with friend at a fairly nice CHAIN restaurant (so not a fancy/schmancy high end place) and she didn't even open the menu! She just asked for what she wanted. Now she had no concerns as to what they were going to charge her...not concerned about upcharges for substitutions. Not a lot of quesions to the waitress ("Can I have this instead of that"), she just said exactly what she wanted and how she wanted it prepared and then asked, "Can you make that?" And they could and did. (This was at a Mimi's Cafe and I've had the same thing happen with her at Claim Jumper.)

This one really depends on my mood. If I'm in my "I'm really trying to be good phase", yes I will ask.

I had such a bad day yesterday and I am trying to put it behind me today. We went to the movies and DH bought movie popcorn and put "butter" on it. I sat there and gulped it down like it was nothing. I know better, but it was that mindless eating that got to me. That and the candy -- oh my. I promise to be better today.

quotd-no usually I'll just find something that is reasonably healthy and go with that- it's pretty rare we eat out so indulging a little I think is fine.
If it makes the popcorn eater feel any better...last night one of our guys marked down a freezer full of asian food. I brought home what I could fit in my freezer and cooked up a box of wontons and eggrolls that wouldn't fit lol. We ate them all...this was at about 10pm ugh.

My biggest obstacle to this is actually forgetting to do it. I often ask for salad with dressing on the side. But sometimes I forget. If it's my mistake, I would feel too badly to send it back, you know?

Being vegetarian, it's usually the case that there are one or two things on a menu that are even possibilities, so I tend to try to avoid restaurants that don't have anything that is vegetarian and not covered in cream, for instance. Recently, my DH went to a restaurant that didn't have ANY vegetarian options and they were more than happy to make him some steamed vegetables and rice. Once I was in a similar situation and the chef prepared some utterly fabulous pasta just for me. It does feel a little awkward to say basically "Look, you don't have anything on here that I can eat - can you do this special thing for me" but servers and chefs are usually willing and able to be quite helpful.

QOTD: Fish? NEVER! Yuck! The smell makes me ill! When I ate at CRT in Jan, a lady at the table next to us ordered the fish, and I had to sit there and breath through my mouth til she was done eating. I almost just had my sandwich wrapped up and took it outside to eat, but she finally finished her meal and I was able to breath again. I do take Airborne which contains fish, but none of the smell or taste.

QOTD: Do you tweak your restaurant meals? I do substitute things like grilled veggies in place of fries, but I've never asked for anything special or "off menu".

Good morning, losers!

I can usually make things work for me from the menu. I do ask for dressing on the side and substitute fruit for fries. I'll even stick the bread plate on the table out of my reach so it doesn't tempt me.

Just a little reminder that we have 4 more weigh ins for this challenge -- including this Friday's weigh in. So if you are one of those folks who likes to really pour it on in the homestretch, this is your time. :thumbsup2

Have a great OP day all!

Good morning loosers! Well it's a new week and time to re-focus for those that have been loosing momentum instead of weight! At least that's been true for me. I've had several days of inattention to what I eat, partially because there are no supplies in the house, so when I'm out I just stop wherever is handy and get whatever I want. Can't keep up that kind of behaviour for long, as we all know what happens.

So on the way home from work tonight I WILL be pulling into the GROCERY store and not a RESTAURANT. I'm hoping there is something in the freezer right now for me to take to work for lunch and I think there is one sad piece of fruit left...or maybe some canned pineapple.

QOTD: What will you do this week to keep the momentum going (or restart) as we head into the home strech of our Biggest Loser Challenge?

Onward & Downward!
