Bizzare Foods at WDW?

What I found real unusual was the steak that was served with a side of macaroni and cheese.

I mean: really?? Is it normal to combine those two in the US??
I certainly isn't here!:rotfl:

In no way at all do I mean this as antagonistic, but don't you think this is a bit of a HUGE generalization ? I mean, one restaurant (or two) in Disney combines steak and mac and cheese and you kind of ask if this is normal in the US ? It's a big country !! We don't all get a memo saying that now we're to combine these two items!! :lmao: It just struck me as kind of funny, that's all. ;)

I imagine that every country comes up w/ some odd combos every now and then. :goodvibes

P.S. Will also be in Nassau for a day while on the Disney Dream Cruise. Any accessible restaurants with "bizarre" menu fare?

We went to a place called the Bahamian Kitchen in Nassau. It's walking distance and everything. A little place but my DH had turtle steak there.

Sydney's mom: it's ok :) No offense taken.

But I've been to New York too, we had dinner there in the hotel's restaurant. Fairly upscale so instead of macaroni and cheese as a side it was pasta au gratin :)

Which just made me wonder: is it really common?? Or did I just happen to find the two places where that is considered a normal combination? Never found it outside the US yet. I mean you need to ask in order to learn:teacher:

And heck yes, any country has it's own combination that other countries think of as weird or strange....
I mean we are apparantly one of the few countrys that consider fries and mayonaise to be a natural combination, which it is of course

I would recommend Boma or Jiko! At Jiko there's an appetizer, Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin, that gets rave reviews all the time! Although the restaurant is a bit pricey, you could always drop your daughter off at Simba's clubhouse if she's young enough and enjoy a nice romantic dinner while she gets to eat dinner and have fun with other kids. I believe it's $11.50/hour with a 2 hour minimum...that's what we plan on doing with our 5 and 10 year old. Also, after dinner all of you could go outside and see the animals with the night vision goggles and sit around the fire pit and listen to storytellers. Can you tell I LOVE AKL???? Have fun either way!

I did some of the special food and wine festival events and have been served:

duck gizzard salad
crab stuffed squash blossom
grilled ostrich with truffle
snail ravioli

They are expensive, no-refund events and are not recommended for children or picky eaters.

Also take a look at Sanaa. Worth it just for the bread service, and if you like hot stuff you can get sambal and garlic pickle.

:rotfl2: When I moved to the South, I found out that mayo and fries is VERY popular here!! who knew?? I haven't tried it yet though.....

French fries are from Belgium, and they eat them with Mayo... we don't usually put ketchup on our fries... what is odd is in Canada it is normal to put animal fat and cheese on fries (poutine). Some of my Belgian friends will add mayo to the mix... We love the healthy eating don't we!!

RedfromNL, myself & my family are from Indiana, USA (family here since 1700s), & I had never heard of, or seen steak & pasta (aka mac & cheese) until WDW. So, no, I don't think it is that common across our large country. Actually, DH & I had some mac & cheese a couple of months ago & that was the first time in years. I usually see steak served with baked potatoes or french fries. But then, we rarely eat beef, except on the DDP!

Just want to mention that your country is a favorite of mine & my husband's. Everyone we meet there is always so welcoming & friendly. When we went to one of the WWII museums (Bridge Too Far), all of the locals keep thanking us for what America did to help free them - it was very touching.

Re: authentic international food - in the US can only be found in the few small eateries owned and/or run by immigrants or families of recent immigrants. Our first trip to Italy was a jolt for us - we thought Italian food was like we get here - same goes for Chinese food! WDW, like other US restaurants, is in business to make money & understanding that most of their customers are Americans, cater their menu to American tastes - makes sense.

I'd like to mention that I am pleased to see more Americans eating in a healthy way & exercising. Maybe we can soon start turning our obesity rate into reverse. But then, I do think one should indulge while on vacation!!!

Again, GREAT replies!!!! Nassau and the Conch sounds like a winner! And turtle steak.... now we're getting somewhere! :thumbsup2 ;)

We had ostrich as an appetizer at Jiko in 2009...but sadly it looks like it didn't survive the menu change.
