We are going next month for my sons birthday. Are there any special things they do for birthdays? Either resort upgrades or restaurant specials?

There are plenty of special experiences/tours for purchase. If you are asking if you will be given comped food or upgrades, it is extremely unlikely.

I guess anything is possible and years ago pixie dust was occasionally given to those celebrating b-days, but other than people wishing you a happy b-day, I wouldn't expect much preferential treatment.

It is really rather random whether you will get the birthday pixie dust, but a wearing a birthday button at least lets them know. You WILL get a ton of "Happy Birthdays" from CMs. You might get picked out to do something special or given a little extra, but not necessarily. I know some of the restaurants will bring a complimentary small desert, but I imagine even that varies. My friend got a free blob of Grey Stuff plus a card signed by Belle and Beast at dinner at Be Our Guest restaurant.

If I got a card from belle for my birthday I would probably cry lol and I'm 22. I mean, my son is turning 2 so it's not like he expects anything, but I just want people to say happy birthday and stuff so he gets a reaction haha.

As the PPs said, if your son wears a Birthday button (you can get it from Guest Services in the parks for sure and sometimes at other locations as well), he'll get plenty of "Happy Birthday" wishes from CMs and (sometimes) other guests!

In terms of the restaurants, it's really hit or miss what will happen. It's up to the server, the restaurant's own policies, how busy it is, etc. At a minimum, most servers wills at least say "Happy Birthday", but we've had a few that didn't even do that. Other times, we've been given a birthday cupcake, had confetti sprinkled on the table, etc. So it really varies. In general, it's best to go in with the mind set that nothing will happen. That way you are not disappointed if nothing happens.

Otherwise, you can purchase a cake and have it delivered to you table. Most TS venues have small cakes available for purchase at the podium. Otherwise, you could splurge and order a custom cake (they're pricey...as in several hundred dollars).

you get a button. everything else you must arrange for and pay for on your own.

you MIGHT get a plate with 'happy birthday Jimmy' written in chocolate syrup at dessert at a nicer TS location if it is noted on the ADR.

Yeah, my buddy is 28 and a guy. The waiter presented him with the card and he said "Oh, wow, I got a card signed by Beauty and Belle." The waiter nearly dropped his tray trying not to crack up! He's a character that one.

If you are crafty, you can make him a special Disney themed birthday shirt! :goodvibes That will almost guarantee special attention....

If you aren't crafty, try Etsy :goodvibes:goodvibes

Sometimes, at some quick service restaurants, they'll give you a free mini cake or an extra dessert if you're wearing a birthday pin. But it depends on the castmember.

Get him a button and see if any pixie dust floats your way.

If you want something, like a personalized custom cake, you'll need to talk with private dining about having it made and delivered to an ADR.

Yesterday at work I was talking about how I wanted to take my daughter for her birthday but that it would be crazy to go on such a busy day ( her birthday is July 4th). My coworker was adamant that she would get in FREE for her birthday and wouldn't believe me when I told her they only did that as a special thing a few years ago. If only they still did that :). The most I've seen personally is a free cupcake at a TS meal.

You cannot predict pixie dust. We were at.WDW for my son birthday. He got a cupcake from a ts restaurant, a mickey cake pop from a cm at mk and a birthday card from Mickey at the hotel.
He was very impressed.

He is only 2.!!!!! I don't know what you mean by "he gets a reaction haha". If it is important to you to have a "reaction" you can plan and purchase a cake or other celebration for him. Birthday Buttons usually get lots of birthday wishes if that is what you hope for.
If you think about it there are many, many, many people celebrating something daily at Disney. They can't do something "special" for hundreds and thousands of guests daily.
Have a Good Trip

As you can see by most of the PPs, you can get a happy birthday pin for your child and can expect many Happy Birthday wishes by cms and guests alike. Anything else will be pure luck. Hoping or expecting for something magical is setting yourself up for disappointment. If you really want something special, arrange and pay for it in advance.
