Need some help, need ideas for a birthday party for my DD turning 8 in Jan. Last year we had about 10 girls  over for a sleep over (don't won't to do that again for awhile). We need to do something cheap but different. Any ideas?

My DD just turned 8. We had a "Pretend Sleepover" for 30 girls  at our church's gym. The girls brought their sleeping bags and came dressed in their PJs. We served hotdogs and cheetos for dinner. The cake had a sleeping gown and slippers on it. They played games: sleeping bag race (like potato sack race); roll up the sleeping bag relay (run to a particular place; unroll the sleeping bag; lay down on it; get up; roll up the sleeping bag; run back and give the bag to the next person in the line). We played movie bingo (take a blank bingo card; give the girls words from the movie to fill in the blanks however they want to; then watch the movie and look for the words; the first to get 5 words in a row wins) - We watched HSM 2 so some of the words were: necklace, pool, golf ball, etc. I found a sleepover game book in the party section at Target. It had the bingo grid so I just copied it to hand out. There were also other cute games. Another game we played was the "fill in the word" game (The girls were told to give a noun, verb, adjective, etc. and the blanks of a story were filled in. The story was then read back and of course it was very funny.) We also decorated acrylic picture frames as their party favor. We took a group picture at the beginning of the party. My DH took the picture to one hour developing, and we then put the picture in the frame for the girls to take home. The party was from 6:00-10:00 p.m. I would recommend shortening it.;)

The invitation read: Put on your PJs, & grab your pillow, sleeping bag, and favorite stuffed friend, then join Sarah for a Birthday sleepover that's just pretend.

Good luck with the planning.

-give girls a beauty makeover - ask the guests to bring their favorite robe and slippers to wear - set up stations where girls can have their makeup done and have a manicure and pedicure - set up a table with lotions and perfumes (check ahead of time with the girl's
parents to be sure there are no allergies) - provide hair bands to help keep the girl's hair away from their face and have lots of mirrors so that the guests can check out their new look - have lots of helpers at your stations to keep the lines down and pay close attention to hygiene! - don't forget to do a "photo shoot" with the divas!
-provide crowns and feather boas for girls to wear
-make matching tie-dye t-shirts in the same colours
-make necklaces and bracelets using plastic cording and beads
-purchase body paint and allow guests to design tattoos for each other
-decorate your own flip-flops with glitter and paints
-have a "Fashion Relay" - divide the group into two teams -give each team a suitcase filled with oversized pants, a shirt, a jacket, necklaces, bracelets, a purse, and a pair of shoes. -on "go", one person on each team opens the suitcase and puts on all the items, runs to the other side of the party area, around the chair, and back to starting line -she then takes her items off, and the next person in line continues in the same manner- the team to finish first wins
-play "Trashin' Fashion" - divide guests into 2 teams - provide each team with several garbage bags, a stack of newspapers and some masking tape - give them 3 minutes to create a fashionable outfit for one of their team members

Luau themes are always fun too. Or head to your local bowling alley or skating rink for some fun.

When DD was that age we had a makeover slumber party. DD is a figure skater, and I asked two of the teenage skaters to come over and do their hair and make up, while I did their nails. While they waited for their makeover they decorated small pink picture frames ,that I got at the dollar sot, with glitter glue and sequins. I hung a piece of pink and purple tye dye velvet in the hall as a back drop gave them a pink feather boa and did a photo shoot of each girl. DH then took the chip around the corner to CVS and printed a shot of each girl for their picture frame. After that they did Karokee, played the cotton ball spoon game and watched movies. In the morning we made cinnamon french toast and bacon. It was a big hit !

Cosmic Bowling is pretty popular here. How about a movie or take the girls for a manicure and then out to lunch. We don't have a decent Zoo her, but if you have one that might be a thought. Maybe a childrens museum. Check out family funs party ideas.

We just celebrated my DD8 birthday. We had it at a paint your own pottery place. The store had certain pieces that the girls could choose from for a set price. All the girls loved this, especially since it was a party that hadn't been done before. For the goodie bags I just did some fun candy and then they got the Masterpiece they had painted a few days later.
This was great for me since it was very low stress. The girls at the store did everything. I just got to watch, take pictures and enjoy.
Our store provided my DD with a special Bday plate that had all the girls' fingerprints made into flowers and their names on the back and a Happy bday message and Cake on the front.

It was really affordable $100 for rental and $3 per child on top. 1 hour for totally interactive play with kids on equipment and I just sat back and waited for them to finish.

You could bring your own food (hot dogs would be great), although we ordered a pizza (I'm back to work this year after being SAHM so a little less cheap this year).

Brought own drinks and made own cake. Dollar store for loot bags $2 per child.

Great deal... everything she didn't play with was set aside as birthday gifts for future parties or for Christmas. I think the party actually paid for itself.

Check your area for gymnastics centers, it was a great time for the kids.

DD turned 8 this summer. She and her friends are very much into the American Girl dolls. We had her party at home and I bought a Samantha Mystery party game for the girls to play. It's kind of like a play. Each girl has a role to play and there's a script to follow. The game includes a couple of objects that you have to hide in the house, which help the kids solve the mystery. They had so much fun! The game takes about 45 min to complete.

Instead of a big birthday cake, I made cupcakes and didn't frost them. I put a couple of bowls of different frostings and sprinkles out on the table and let the girls decorate their own cupcakes. That was an activity in itself!
