Hi all! My DD is almost 19 and has tried pretty much every option except birth control for her acne.
What do you all think about birth control treating acne? Has it worked for you? If so, what kind do you suggest?

Thanks so much =):goodvibes:wizard:

Yes it works if her acne is hormonal. I use bcp to treat another skin condition as well. Is her acne mainly concentrated on her chin area? If so, that type tends to be hormone related.

Has she been to a dermatologist?

Honestly I think the BC to control acne is a total shill. I would never use it for that reason. Dermatologists have lots of options available to them. She might want to try this b4 going the BC route.

It works, or at least it helps. It also makes your period more regular and manageable, makes your breasts bigger and prevents pregnancy...making me wonder yet again why I wasn't on the stuff years before becoming sexually active.

Oh, it can also make you gain weight. Best not to mention that.

I went to a dermatologist and she tried several different topical and oral medications for me with my acne and none of them worked. I finally decided to go on the pill (Apri) and within a few weeks I stopped breaking out.

I'm 18 and I've had acne for about six years, but was never able to control it. I started using birth control because I hadn't gotten my period in about three months so my gynecologist prescribed it. I did gain about ten pounds, but my face cleared up completely! Everyone is always telling me that my face has gotten so much better. :) So the birth control got rid of two problems, but I am only taking it for six months.

By the way, my doctor is from Mexico. I'm using a pill called Diane.

I'm on Yaz, and it's helped my skin.
It's also made me fat, but w/e. At least I've got clear skin.

My acne cleared up with ortho-tricyclen. Since I have stopped taking it, I don't have terrible breakouts, but periodic ones.

I used it for my skin for a few years before I got my married - I missed the teenage spots and got them in my 20's! It worked far better than skin creams etc.
It never made me gain weight, and hormonal BC doesn't always affect your weight, it is a side effect but not in the majority of people who use it. Injectable contraceptives are more likely to cause weight gain.
I work for Family Planning and see dozens of oral contraceptive users every week.

I've been on YAZ for a while to help with PMDD. It has gotten rid of almost all of my breakouts. Definitely the hormonal break outs. Fortunately no weight gain with it either.

Has she tried Spironolactone yet? This is what is in some birth control pills that can help clear up hormonal acne. She can choose to try the birth control pills or she can ask her derm for a prescription for Spironolactone. You can find more info about this and birth control for acne at acne.org. Here is the board for hormonal treatments....

There is also an area that discusses all over the counter products and precription products for acne.

Hope that helps.
