Hi-
DS9 has ADHD and is currently on medication. I have heard from an other mom that I know that she is taking her son for EEG/Biofeed back for ADHD. I was wondering if anyone here has tried it and had and can give me more information: If you have tried it did you notice any effect? If you feel it did help how long was it before you noticed any changes in behavior/attention? Do you still have to use medication, or were you able to reduce or eliminate medication?

We are trying to decide if it is something we should also look in to doing.

Thank you :)

If your child can tolerate it emotionally then it is sort of a “can not hurt” thing, the information I have read is that if you can find a practitioner who combines it with some of the eastern “sciences” yoga, meditation etc, that it is much more likely to be helpful in the real world.

As with all children with an ADHD diagnosis it is essential to have an auditory processing evaluation done if you have not had that done already I would start there.

bookwormde, Thank you for your reply. Do schools normally do the Auditory Processing evaluation or is this something that we would have to have done one our own by a specialist? He was recently evaluated by his schools speech teacher for what I thought may have been a slight speech problem, but they said it was nothing to worry about.

DS is a very bright kid. After a conversation with his teacher telling me that he does not seem to be listening in class he has come home with a math, socal studies and science test that were all 100%. His handwriting is awful, he hates to write, but does like to read and be read to.

He was diagnosed with the ADHD by his pediatrician who's specialty is neurology, but I have been wondering lately if I should take him to the Developmental Ped. to get a more through evaluation and rule out any other underlying conditions. This appt I was told would take me several months to get.

Sorry for the long reply. You and a lot of others on here seem to know the ins and outs of dealing with the schools and what are the best things to do. Out where we live it is more country so there are not many resources out this way. I have asked his Ped. several times for information and he has not been overly helpful. Unfortunitally there are not too many other Peds in the immediate area. As it is his dr is 1/2 hr away.

Auditory processing evaluations are done by clinicians, and your Ped should have known to request one as part of his ADHD evaluation. It is worth the drive to get to a developmental pediatrician or neurologist who has current training in pediatric developmental and neurological variations.

With children that are exceptionally intelligent, it is often more difficult to find out the sources of differences since they “self adapt” at much higher rates.

With the profile you describe it is important to be vigilant for any sensory sensitivities and any indications of social limitation or anxiety issues (especially if you intend to use medications for ADHD since this is a contraindication). This is especially true since there are indications of speech differentials.

bookwormde,
Thank you again. I will definately look into getting the Auditory Processing Eval done. I am going to follow up on getting an appt with the Dev. Ped.

I think we will still try the EEG/bio feedback too. Maybe we will get lucky and it will also be of some help.

Thanks again :) D
