Binky Patrol here we come!

Here is part of the letter I received from the BP chapter I sent them to:

Are children helping you? Consider letting them do a binky of their own to donate. For this, use the no-sew directions in the attachment called 'no-sew'. Choose any dimension larger than 44" square. For the binkies the children make, you may also choose the binky style in 'tie'.

Popular sizes:

44" square (security blanket - snuggle size)

36" x 48" (crib size)
50" x 60" (throw size)
54" x 75" (lap/throw size)
68" x 86" (twin size)
81" x 86" (double size)

If you have fabric markers and light colored fabric, let them decorate a square or two with a happy (non religious) message of hope and happiness. They can be sewn into a blanket.

The general rule of thumb is that one 50" x 70" or larger (sewn or quilted) OR two 44" (can be tied) square blankets fulfill the requirements to get a voucher. This is PER PERSON. Twin or full size binkies are always very, very welcome as they often provide the only warmth and comfort neglected or homeless children have at night. As not all children in need are small, remember that we need the large binkies for pre-teens and teens just as much as we need the small binkies for the younger children. In fact, right now we are desperately in need of binkies appropriate for school age children and especially pre-teen and teen. We will always take 'security' binkies for the little ones, but we need warm binkies for the older children - badly.

You can choose to sew, quilt, knit, crochet.or tie your binkies. See attachments to this email for patterns you may want to use. HOWEVER, you do not need to follow these patterns. You may use your own. Please make sure your binky is 100% cotton or flannel and that it is clean, new fabric and requires no special care. Avoid beads, glitter, loose threads, etc. that might cause a choking hazard to younger children or infants. Please wash fabric/binky before delivery.

We sent in 8 blankets, two for each person participating.

Kmermaid.... Thank you so much. That is helpful. My chapter doesn't offer much in the way of direction. She just told me I may want to do a larger one for each adult and 2-3 smaller ones for the kids. She also said that for the Disney promotion is was the fleece blankets with ties. I don't understand that and am a little dissappointed since we can do some nice crochet ones and my mom makes the most beautiful and sweet fabric ones. She makes cribs sets and they are beautiful. I think I will have her make some anyways to give to them. I can't imagine they don't accept them.

Thanks for some more direction. I kinda feel like I am bugging the volunteer lady up here in Maryland. I was really hoping she would have a standard email letting people know what was expected. I am always nervous about doing the wrong things!

Thanks again!

I don't know how many chapters there are in Maryland. Although we made the no-sew fleece tie blankets, one of the emails I received from the organization contained a link to a photo of a strip pieced sewn quilt or blanket. There were directions for making single thickness fleece blankets for smaller kids, but since there was a need expressed for blankets for teens, we made ours with a double thickness of fleece. When I dropped off the blankets we had made, I talked with the coordinator about sewing blankets from my collection of fabric scraps sometime in the future, and she said they would be happy to receive them.

Sadie22, we are doing the binky patrol out of Upperco, MD (near Hamstead). Is that who you worked for?

That's the one! Really nice lady, said she's being doing Binky Patrol for about 14 years.

She seems nice, I just am a bit confused about what is required. She said three times just single layer and I am making two teen sizes.

I couldn't really get from her exactly what she wanted for my family of four, so we are making 8 blankets total. I hope that is enough. We live out in Mount Airy, so it is a bit of hike to get up to Hamstead, but I was thrilled when the Binky patrol popped up at 5:25 on the last day. I had been searching for Maryland for days, knowing they were going to be shutting down soon. I tried really quickly and up popped the Upperco Binky Patrol. I signed up my family of four. Went back to sign up my sister's family within a minute or two and got the message that they had closed the program. I am talking no more than three minutes later. I believe we were the 1 millionTH sign up. Anyways, we are thrilled to be doing the binky's. My DD is really enjoying picking the fabric and making the ties!

My mom makes lots of types of blankets, so we will be doing more in the future for this great charity!

The instructions refer to single thickness but that double would be warmer for the older kids, so it's left up to use to choose. I actually found kits on sale 50% off at Joann Fabrics with the correst size of coordinated fabrics I liked as I was walking into the store. The charity seems to welcome whatever a donor wants to do. I was thinking warm for winter but spring is on its way at last and we do have the hot summers here, so singles are great, too.

I feel fortunate we got in on this in time, also.
