Bin Laden - celebrations

And this is what burns me. We're the only country in the world who gets "ugly"? Because we have the right to disagree and do, we are "Ugly Americans"? Whether I agree or disagree I would fight to the death to protect the right of anyone on this board to tell me I'm wrong. Do you think people in other countries feel like that? And I guess you are an "average" American while those of us who have a differing opinion aren't?

Totally agree with this.

I don't think it's the differing opinions the PP is referring to. I think it is the personal insults and vitrol that is being thrown around.

Like the original OP being "disgusted" by our behavior?

You completely missed the point of my post. It's not about agreeing or disagreeing, it's about how people on this thread went about it. People can agree or not but they don't have to get nasty and unfortunately, it became nasty on this thread.

This thread as opposed to all other threads on the board?:rotfl:

Yes! I know other threads get nasty but this is different. Other threads don't insult other posters countries and right to express their opinions all because they don't agree with them.

American's are thought of as insular, xenophobic people and this thread has unfortunately and embarrassingly proved it

Yes, I'm feeling very uncomfortable in this thread so I'm politely bowing out.

Of course it got nasty. This is a VERY raw and sensitive issue. Emotions are running high and people react accordingly. It may not be the nicest reaction, but sometimes that happens. When a person feels offended, they often react in kind and lash out to offend those who offended them. It creates a domino effect. We are all human, it happens.

ETA: I read the other threads on this topic and this has been relatively tame compared to them, IMO.

People around here get nasty if someone doesn't agree with them. That's nothing new.

Personally, I feel saddened by the events simply because I'm tired of the constant worry about attacks and the hate that's flung around so much nowadays. I'm glad that one powerful terrorist can't hurt anyone again but my happiness is more a solemn, serious type only because that is who I am. I don't fault those who want to party or whatever - I just don't get it.

I'm also saddened by the need to attack someone who happens to live in another country. Maybe the OP doesn't understand but I don't either. Plus I enjoy opinions from ALL, no matter where you happen to live.

The OP on this thread was:

Let me start by saying how happy I am that Bin Laden was caught. I think it´s amazing that the US Army was able to find him after all these years!
BUT....and yes, there is a but, I am disgusted by the celebrations in the streets. Just as much as I was disgusted by seeing muslim celebrations after 9/11.

The bolded was the part that many people have a problem with. There is nothing wrong with choosing not to celebrate the death but instead of saying "I am choosing not to celebrate the death but won't judge those that do" the OP was a blatant judgment about how people who had their lives changed on 9/11 chose to celebrate the end of a manhunt for it's orchestrator that was ten years in the making. The OP wasn't agreeing to disagree, it was judging those that reacted to the news differently then she did.

I wouldn't judge anyone who chose to not celebrate his death and expect the same in return. I suspect that had the OP been more neutral the thread would have also been more neutral.

I agree. That's why I've decided to stay out of bin Laden threads.

Glad bin Laden is dead, uncomfortable at the idea of being glad a human being is dead.

Did not link the article to back up my opinion but because it directly relates to the topic we're discussing. Don't understand why you seem so angry about someone linking to a news article discussing the subject of this thread.

I am not angry at all. I am just pointing out the fact that you can find something on the internet to back up any opinion.

I have no reason for being angry, because imho that article doesn't prove or disprove what anyone is saying. The relegious leaders that were quoted in that article may know a lot more about what is said in the Bible than I do, but I can guarantee you 100% that they do NOT know God's opinion on the death of Bin Laden and what we should morally do about it anymore than I do. They do not have a hot line to heaven. So, they have every right to state their opinion of what I should or shouldn't do, but in the end, its between ME and God what I do and whether it is right or wrong.

On the bolded part--maybe that is where we differ. I don't think Bin Laden was a human being. He was the lowest scum of the earth. He was a murdering coward that hid behind his followers. No, no human there.

You know, death is a part of life. Everyone and everything dies. Yesterday we buried dh's grandmother. She was able to die in her sleep at the age of 91 and finding out that day that she had cancer--she died peacefully with no pain. If Bin Laden had lived a different life, he too may have come to a peaceful death. He made his choices.

While I agree that there is too much xenophobia in America in general, this thread is about America. It is about the capture/death of a man who cause a lot of death and destruction in America. It is about people celebrating the fact that justice has been served for the people of 9/11.

I agree with Firedancer-the word "disgusted" is what I am opposed to in the OP.

ITA. Not one person came into a thread and said, "I am disgusted by the people who are not wanting to celebrate the death of Bin Laden".

If anyone doesn't want to celebrate it--don't. But lose the holier than thou attitude that you are someone better than those that do.

If you feel its wrong--by all means DON"T DO IT. But let the rest of us make our own choices as to what is right or wrong for us.

The original post set the tone. You can't be surprised when it starts out calling people's behavior disgusting and goes downhill from there, can you? :confused3 As many have stated, there was a HUGE difference between groups of people congregating to celebrate the death of a man who killed thousands of people (and probably at his hands hundreds of thousands throughout the world) and when people in other countries cheered at the death of innocent civilians. And I'm sick of the world telling us we're "insular" and "xenophobic". I find that to be very much the pot calling the kettle black for many countries.

I don't know if we are still discussing the original topic (it's hard to tell around here sometimes) but after giving this thought, here's my opinion (which might prove to be vastly unpopular, but like that's never happened before!)

I live in New York City. On September 11th, almost 3000 of my neighbors were killed, through no action of their own. They weren't fighting a battle, they were on their way to work. They were killed because they were Americans. Today, many of the First Responders -- the people who spent their time in the ruins of the WTC trying to find survivors, are dying of respiratory illnesses directly caused by the particles from those buildings. Not to mention the psychological pain of all of the families and friends of all of the people listed above.

So, if we want to celebrate the assissination of the evil son-of-a-(can't use word on the Dis) who was directly responsible for all of that pain, we will. And we really don't give two doodies if anyone is condemning us.

Lol, ate people talking about my attack when I said that Iceland is cold, and under the radar of the rest of the world? Too funny!

As I said I would never presume to tell people in other cultures how they should feel about anything. I even get the people celebrating our degradation. If you've been taught to hate since birth that would not be an unusual reaction.

So well said. He chose his life knowing the probable outcome.

I have celebrated death on several occasions. Watch someone wither away from degenerating disease. Death is a welcome reprieve.
