Bin Laden - celebrations

I will tell you what I saw on TV. People spontaneously singing our national Anthem, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, waving flags. Feeling joy that there is one less evil monster on this planet.

I'm a slacker then. I only managed to feel joy.

How this boils down (to me anyway) it's like fighting in your family.... YOU can call your sister every name in the book.... but the girl down the street better not call her names or you'll defend her. This is how I feel about folks from other countries criticizing the way some US citizens reacted to the news... how dare they come into our family and talk to us like that when they have NO IDEA what it's like to be part of THIS family... what this FAMILY has been through at the hands of OBL.

Did you not see the people outside the WH acting like they were at a kegger?

They were college kids. When do many of them not act like they're at a kegger? Personally, I didn't see any beer/kegs/anything unbecoming of a U.S. citizen. Again, you choose not to participate, I commend you, but please don't bash those that do.

Again I ask if anyone would be appalled at the SEALS for "celebrating" or for any military branch to have celebrated, or what about the video of the West Point cadets? Are you disgusted by them as well? :confused3 It's all a spontaneous burst of emotions, like finally letting go of a breath you've been holding for 10 years.

Chanting USA at a baseball game, waving the american flag, reciting the pledge of allegiance are completely different types of celebrations than the party-type atmosphere that I saw on TV.

I saw young people from some of the top schools in our country celebrating something, the death of a monster that has loomed in the background of their lives. I saw flags being displayed, I heard people singing, I saw absolutely nothing offensive. Nobody was burning flags from other countries, nobody was torching casr, flipping cars, shooting guns. I wonder if there were any arrest, I have not heard of any arrest reports I could be wrong.

I saw that and that was awesome!!!!

Ok, first of all I did not say that I thought any of it was disgusting or that I was appalled at anything. Please point out where I even remotely hinted at that?

Second, mermaid, ok so what about our citizens feeling the same way? That's part of our family, right?

Third, I also have NOT bashed anyone that has celebrated in that fashion.

This is why threads like these get out of control...people read into things that simply are NOT there. (See bolded.)

So what's wrong with the party like atmosphere? There have been many people here saying why its right and okay to celebrate, I'd like to hear why it isn't. Maybe I've missed it, but I see alot of "its wrong" but no "why" its wrong.

ETA Just wanted to say that I know you didn't say any of things you mentioned in your pp.

Actually, I have apologized for the behavior of my family. And some I don't speak with anymore. Bad is bad. You want to insult my family, have at it - there is plenty of material!

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. And nobody has to like it. Ain't Freedom grand?

I did not mean to insinuate that you were disgusted. I quoted you because my first paragraph responded to you. After that a new paragraph because it was a question meant for everyone who felt disgusted or felt celebrating was wrong, not you specifically. My apologies if you thought I meant you specifically.

Militants now vow revenge, I wonder....is there a cap on "eye for an eye?"

Interesting thoughts. MLK had great wisdom. This is a different situation and I have mixed feelings about the celebrations.

I feel relief that this awful, evil person is no longer of this earth and able to carry out more terror on innocent lives.

I feel happiness that there is now some closure to the many thousands directly affected by the 9/11 tragedy.

I feel pride that our military and intelligence personnel were able to accomplish a tremendous milestone in the war on terror and that the information gleaned from evidence at Osama's compound may lead to further progress.

I feel a swell of patriotism.

Do I feel joy in the death - however deserved or justified when he engaged in a firefight with our forces - of another human being? A part of me, yes; certainly.....this was an evil man whose goal over many years has been the harm of innocent Americans.

I would have been more easily able to celebrate had they captured him alive, even though that scenario would have brought its own set of complications and conflicts. I won't dance in the streets and I do fear that the images of Americans doing so puts us in the same light in the world's view as those who vow to harm us. But I respect the rights of those who do - Americans fight every day for the freedoms of speech and expression brutally subdued in other countries.

But I will freely say that I am glad this evil being is no longer among us and I thank our military for all the sacrifices they make to enable us to sleep a little more peacefully at night.

I've seen this posted numerous times in this thread, and just wondering if there really is anyone here that believes Bin Laden's life was indeed, precious?

This pic was taken on 44th Street two weeks ago, between Broadway and 8th Avenue. This is the reality New Yorker's have lived with for almost ten years. So if some people want to celebrate the fact that the evil being who brought about this change in our way of life is gone, I say have at it!

Call it a trump card, call it what you will. This is our reality.

Precious not even to his family memebers many have disowned him.

You accused me of hating all muslims! When I never even mentioned them once. I think most muslims prefer to distance themselves and their beliefs from Bin Laden.

Some beliefs state that all life is precious no matter what. I wonder how they would justify this man's life? I guess that they wouldn't.

Exactly, and as far as I'm concerned, MLK's speech doesn't apply to a man like Bin Laden. Let me rephrase that, to a monster like BL. Him ceasing to exist IS a cause for celebration, thats not hate, that's justice and it lights up the sky like fireworks!

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!
When did I ever mention Muslims, talk about taking a leap. I have no clue where you saw I wrote anything about Muslims.

Do you really not see where I got that from your post?

Well in my book when someone is disgusted by the actions of a group of people who belong to one larger group, she/he is stating disgust by those people individually and as a whole.

Aren't you disgusted with the terrorists that attached us on 9/11? You know the Muslim terroristss? By using the logic from the bolded above that means that you should find all Muslims disgusting since they are a part of that larger group. Or is that not what you are saying? :confused3
