Bin Laden - celebrations

I don't need an article to tell me what I believe is morally right and wrong. I believe it is morally wrong to mass murder. I believe it's morally fine to celebrate the death of evil. Done.

The only one who can decide if its morally right to celebrate, is yourself.

I totally agree with both of you.

There are many things in this world that are morally wrong that are done every day. I will take care of my morality and others should take care of theirs.

It's a news story on the topic at hand, with quotes and opinions from leaders of various faiths. I'm not asking you to read it, but I think some people will appreciate hearing various points of view on the subject. Others are unwilling to hear or read anything that might call their own point of view into question.

For many of us, the death of bin Laden leads to cognitive dissonance.

"They" are the subset of the world's population who on hearing about the murder of approximately 3,000 people from all over the world in NY, VA, and PA on September 11, 2001 responded with happiness, the burning of American flags, and hope it would happen again. That is who "they" are, nothing more.

Totally agree with you!

A very interesting CNN article about whether it's morally right to celebrate:

I think I'm capable of defining my own morales without referencing a cnn article. BTW, I did read the article.

why? what are the conflicting ideas.

BTW, I read the article. And I read another one that said why we SHOULD celebrate his death. That's the beauty of the internet, you can find something to back up just about ANY opinion. :goodvibes

Morally speaking, who's job is it to question my point of view, or your point of view, or anyone's POV? A point of view is just an opinion. There really is no right or wrong opinion, because opinion is not a fact....it's only an opinion.

I've been reading this same debate across many forums & editorial pages. It is very interesting, to say the least.

I will never, ever, celebrate the loss of a human life. I value my own life so much, that I cannot fathom expressing joy over someone else's life being finished. It's just not the way I'm wired.

Now, did I celebrate the news? Yes, I did. Not because he was killed, but because it was the completion of a long and hard phase of a greater mission. Closing the book on the Bin Laden search (dead or alive) means we can now move onto another chapter in the war against terrorism. I see it as a celebration of the men and women who worked together to bring about this mission, and its successful completion.

If people want to celebrate the successes I'm all for joining them. Celebrating death? Well, I'll recognize their right to do so, but I won't be joining them.

Totally agree with you!

Ummm, I didn't line the article to help anyone define their "morales." Do you have any thoughts on the opinions expressed in the article?

:confused3 Was I telling people not to read it? I was expressing my feelings after reading it and I stand by it.

Yes, I think that's exactly what you did. But that's just my opinion.

A quote from the article:

There’s at least one sentiment she feels no ambivalence about.

Bin Laden’s death should give the United States something else its citizens have craved since September 11, 2001.

“I think this is going to be unifying for us,” she says. “Very few things have been unifying for us in the past 10 years.”

Uh, yeah that went well. :rolleyes1

Glad bin Laden is dead, uncomfortable at the idea of being glad a human being is dead.

Did not link the article to back up my opinion but because it directly relates to the topic we're discussing. Don't understand why you seem so angry about someone linking to a news article discussing the subject of this thread.

You would think that statement might be true at least for a short period of time. After 9/11 we, as a nation, were more unified than we had been in a long time, IMO. But it sure doesn't seem like that's the case now.

Yikes, what an embarrassing thread! You people really couldn't discuss this without throwing in the nasty remarks? No wonder why some think American's are "ugly". This thread does a disservice to the "average" American.

Why is this thread still open?

Certainly not if the DIS is any indication of the general population. :sad2:

I'm sorry, but IMO, you did.

What's there to discuss. You've made your point.

You are so right.

And this is what burns me. We're the only country in the world who gets "ugly"? Because we have the right to disagree and do, we are "Ugly Americans"? Whether I agree or disagree I would fight to the death to protect the right of anyone on this board to tell me I'm wrong. Do you think people in other countries feel like that? And I guess you are an "average" American while those of us who have a differing opinion aren't?

I didn't read all the posts (I hate when people say that). But I was involved in the one that was closed and assumed this would end with the same demise. I apologize if this hasn't been mentioned already.

The highest concentration of Arabs in North America is in Dearborn, MI. Those residents took to the streets Sunday night with American flags chanting USA, dancing, laughing, screaming at the top of their lungs, and CELEBRATING the death of someone they hated for more reasons than most of us.

I am not justifying the celebrations but I am pointing out that this effected so many people and they all "celebrated" in their own way. Some spent time with family, some prayed, others reflected, and still others shouted from the street corners.

If a plane went down in the Middle East and killed all the Muslim passengers on board and wiped out a village full of Muslims, I would be totally, completely appalled if any American took to the streets and celebrated the death of those innocent people. I would completely condemn those individuals and I would be sickened by their behavior. But I can make a distinction between cheering when a horrible, evil individual is killed and cheering when innocent lives are lost.

I don't think it's the differing opinions the PP is referring to. I think it is the personal insults and vitrol that is being thrown around.
