Bin Laden - celebrations

How about you stop "trying" (AND YOU ARE!!!!!) to control what posters want to say.

I totally agree with your OP Freya, and its pathetic how some Americans try to dictate what we are allowed to contribute to here.

Waits for some ugly response back as I'm not American!!!

As long as people post that it is offensive for Americans to sing the National ANthem on our streets I will certainly express my disgust. I guess you not being American really have no idea what it means to so many. I see you are British should you go to bed! You have taxes to pay for that lovely wedding your country just threw.

As long as people post they were offended by the national ANthem being sang in our country on our streets I will post that I am offended, pretty small thing to do considering how many peopl have dies at the hands of a vile evil beast as Bin Laden

Nowhere did I read that anywhere on the DIS today. Maybe I missed it.

Let them be offended, it's the USA I can sing the National Anthem any time I darn well please. Offend this ya jackwagons.

This thread is nastier than my FB page has gotten. My neighbor told me to stop posting her wall. And I didn't even start it. I was just calling out her neighbors who could not debate with me, so she said Heather, stop it.

Gosh read the OP she was none to pleased with the celebrations last night, what I saw were people singing the National Anthem!!

I saw respectful singing of the national Anthem and then I saw keg party celebrations. The keg parties were what bothered me.

You didn't miss it. It was never said. Some folks are taking some really big leaps here in regards to other people's comments.

Bin Laden - celebrations

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me start by saying how happy I am that Bin Laden was caught. I think it´s amazing that the US Army was able to find him after all these years!
BUT....and yes, there is a but, I am disgusted by the celebrations in the streets. Just as much as I was disgusted by seeing muslim celebrations after 9/11.

My response to what I saw last night

Singing of the National Anthem, saying the pledge of allegiance, waving flags.
That is what the celebrations consisted of. No car flipping, no burning down buildings, no burning flags of other countries, no shooting guns in the air. Just good wholesome all American Celebrations

Rejoicing that justice is served in memory of those lost on 911.

Rejoicing for one one less terrorist. :thumbsup2

Rejoicing because I live in the USA and I Love my country! :cheer2:

I've seen pictures on college kids' Facebook pages of them with flags and beers, celebrating. :drinking1

Good for them! Most of these kids were around 10ish at that time, and 911 must have scared the poop out them. I don't blame them one bit.

:dance3: God bless the USA....... :dance3:

Thanks! I didn't ask for your respect!:thumbsup2

I didn't realize that patriotism can also equal mean spiritedness.

Hmmm, you posted its sad that in the USA one can't respect a different opinion. If you aren't asking for respect than what does it matter if someone respects a different opinion or not? The fact that you think someone is mean spirited because they don't respect your opinion makes me really curious about how you'll answer :rolleyes1

:goodvibes Ok Heather stop it, you were on with me last night when it all happened I have your back.

I guess I am just amazed that people are butting heads over this issue. I would have thought everyone would be thrilled, in their own way, about the news of bin laden's death. People grieve, handle stress, celebrate or what have you in their own way. To start sniping at each other over how you handled the news is so unbelievably sad to me.

Was I out whooping it up in the streets? No. Did I completely understand those who did? Yep. They are no more or less patriotic than I. It was an emotional night for so many.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I will go back and read it.

Personally, I understand the OP. My first reaction to the celebrating was being taken aback a bit. My thoughts flashed to the Muslims they showed celebrating in the streets after 9/11. It is somewhat disgusting. HOWEVER, I do fully understand why some people feel that way. And even though personally I don't, I do not knock them for their personal, emotional reaction to this. I live a stones throw from joint base Ft Lewis McChord. There are many people in this country that have made a personal sacrifice because of what happened on 9/11. There is a generation of young people that were deeply affected and enlisted in throngs because of it. There are people that were personally effected by that day. I can understand why they would feel the way they do. I just personally do not. Well, I think 9/11 touched us all. . .but some more than others.

Just as an example, I'm from Ted Bundy's home town. Everyone here has a Ted Bundy story. . ."my mom worked with his Mom, he was my paper boy," in my case, my Dad was one of his high school teachers. I felt terrorized growing up by him. I followed his story closely. I felt sooooo bad when he escaped from Colorado and went on to Florida to kill those girls there. And yes, when they finally executed him, I was in college and stayed up very late to drink a beer and celebrate his demise from this earth where he could no longer ever hurt anybody ever again! So that I DO get. Btw, my ex was here freshly from Germany at the time and was VERY opposed to the death penalty. . .and there wasn't much I could say or do to explain why I felt the way I did at that time. I think eventually he understood my position.

So, while personally I don't feel much, I will not take anything away from those that feel like celebrating. You are entitled to your emotions! I think part of my problem with all of this is that I'm pretty cynical and I personally think sometimes it is better to deal with a known enemy than the unknown. It concerns me that maybe his successor may even be worse. I am very concerned about Libya and that we may be supporting a force much worse and threatening than Ghadfi. Isn't this how Bin Laden gained his power? Didn't we in fact support and train this despot against the Russians? Just something to think about.

In the end. . .the world is a better place today. People are entitled to their true emotions.

Well, we have certainly found something we all disagree on--how to react to Osama's death.

Is there a right way and a wrong way? Beats me. I do think ours is different than them celebrating because of what happened on 9/11. But you won't find me in the streets--you might find me on my knees asking God to be with us all during this very turbulent time.

Not sure there is a right or wrong way to react to what we see on TV. The media overdoes everything and I think we need to keep that mind. Do what you need to at this time, react the way you feel is right for yourself--you only have to answer for yourself when your day comes. Osama is answering for his choices. It is the good thing about a just God.

Bless your heart, I'll break it down for you:
:teacher: In this country, a person has the right to express an opinion. Other people should respect that person's right. It doesn't mean they have to agree with it. Better now? :flower3:

OMG wahwahwah about the MLK quote people, how many times is someone going to trot that out. Listen up, we don't care. MLK was a wonderful man, I'm not.

It's not even fully a real quote I'm afraid.

http://ehaugsjaa.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/snopes-you-are-too-slow-for-internet-speed/

FAKE! Sorta. The first part seemed wrong to me. Who are the thousands?

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” –Martin Luther King, Jr.

This quotation is floating around today. But it is a “fake” quote. Or partially fake. The first sentence is not real. The rest IS MLK. That part of the quote is originally from STRENGTH TO LOVE (1963) and goes like this:

REAL:

“Why should we love our enemies? The first reason is fairly obvious. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” –Martin Luther King, Jr.

While I am disgusted by the OPs comment about how she feels about the celebations in comparison to the ones after 9/11, her feeling that way does not equal an attitude of nasty Americans getting what they deserve (if there is retaliation). I do think thats a pretty big leap.
