Would love to hear anyone's experience with bike rentals on castaway cay.

We have a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old who would need child seats, so any experience with that in particular would be helpful (age, availability, weight limits, size limits etc.)

Also:

Are the views of the islands worth the trip and time it takes away from the beach?

What are the trails like?

How much time should we set aside for this?

Please also share anything else that might be helpful. Thanks :goodvibes

I can't answer the child seat questions b/c we left the kids (9 & 6) in the kid area & biked to the adult beach. The adult beach was AMAZING not at all crowded & so much sea life (you could pick up a star fish if you wanted to ). We did this after lunch & the trails were completely paved. We only spent about 2 hrs total biking and visiting the adult only beach. I did see the bikes w/seats & they had plenty to pick from. I'm sure you will get much better replies but the ride was nice & easy.

We rented bikes on our last trip - one with a seat for our youngest dd who was 6 at the time. It was a tight squeeze for her but it worked.

The bike ride was one of my most favorite memories! It is an easy ride. There are places to stop and look - even a trail to a lookout tower which is neat to climb and a great picture spot.

There were plenty of bikes to choose from. Don't the know the specifics on height and weight - but we were able to get a six yo in the seat without problems - but it was a tight squeeze.

I would allot at least an hour for a leisurely ride.

I don't have any experience with the child seats but I have a couple things to say about renting the bikes in general.

We do the bike rental every time. We love it. There is even an observation tower on the opposite side of the island you can climb and see the ship from afar. You can also ride past the adult beach where the trail ends and drink some water they provide for you while getting a different view of the island from that end. We usually spend about 1-2 hours riding. I just enjoy it so much because I can get away from all the crowds.

You also get to ride on the islands airplane runway, which is pretty neat. The trails aren't very treacherous at all. Concrete trails with level ground on all the trails.

Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone! Going by that picture and all your comments I think we're going to give it a try. It looks like so much fun!

We were on the Dream in Dec. We LOVED riding bikes on CC. What we did was ride bikes first then we went on the beach. There is an observation deck that you can go to. Here is the view from it :)

We also love renting bikes and have done it frequently. On our last cruise we put our 2 year old in a seat and we were pleasantly surprised. There was more secure strapping then we expected to see. (We are not bike riders at home, so maybe it was 'normal' but we were glad to see it either way). We only had a bit of worry about the helmets. My 2 year olds head was too big for the smallest helmets and too small for the next size up. We adjusted that next size up to make it secure 'enough' and we were off. The smallest ones seem like they would fit a 1 year old fine. We love the ride but we were actually surprised how much our son loved it too. He looked around and I think he enjoyed just relaxing. Plus it was something different for him, since we don't ride bikes at home. So I bet your kids will think its great, even though it may not seem as exciting as the beach!

Agree with all of the above! There is plenty of time for the beach--the ride was really fun.

They do have children's bikes too so if your little one can pedal let them! They will love it!

Any bikes with training wheels? My 5 year-old is learning, but probably won't be able to ride completely on his own yet... And I don't know how well I'd be able to ride with him in a child seat on my bike, or if he'd even fit... but would really like to go on a bike ride while on CC!

I definitely saw a little boy with training wheels last week.

We love to rent bikes and ride to the lookout tower! It is one of our favorite things to do on CC. Yes, they have bikes with training wheels. DS has biked on his own twice, once at 4 and once at 5. It is a really relaxing, fun family thing to do. They have water coolers placed throughout the bike course too so you can get a cold drink. Helmets are required for anyone 14 and under (I think 14--but don't quote me.)

I have another question. Are the bikes pretty abundant? Is it it something you have to reserve in advance or can you just show up when you feel like it and go?

You can just show up. We've never pre-booked bikes. On our recent Dream cruise our day at Castaway was really windy and chilly and overcast. I thought EVERYONE would be riding bikes so we rushed to get some, but even later in the day they still had plenty. Most people don't take them for more than 1-2 hours so even in the slim chance the run out, it won't be long before some are available. No worries.:thumbsup2

If I were to head over and the bikes were all out, I wouldn't want one anyways! They have tons and tons and tons of bikes and if they are all out, the trail would be crowded! We've sailed 5 times and made it to CC 4 of those. Everytime we just walked up and rented the bikes. Very few people on the trails.

In our two previous trips to CC, we've never ventured past the family beach,so this time(Fantasy MV),Dh & I are going biking! I wasn't sure if I could do it due to physical restrictions from Lyme Disease, but I'm going for it this time!! Reading this thread helped make up my mind.I do want to see more than just the beach & even if I get too tired biking,it's a short enough walk back with the bike to make a new experience worthwhile. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to keep us informed!:thumbsup2

By the way, does anyone know if they have two-seaters? Because that would be perfect-letting DH do most of the work(he bikes an hour every morning,so this would be a piece of cake for him!!).:hippie:

Has anyone rented bikes during the summer months? Is it too hot for riding? We are going in June and would love to try this.

Three times in August. Yes, it's hot, but it is hot no matter what you are doing. The ride is very leisurely and there are lots of places to get cold water.

Anyone know how much bike rental costs? I'm trying to plan my budget for the trip!
