Good SUnday morning everyone. SOrry I haven't been around this week. For the last week between everything going on I have just had the strength to read the posts and not post myself. I think the week took a toll on me. Friday night I was up at 3am and this morning I was up at 2 am. Yesterday I didn't get back to sleep but this morning I read and then watched some tv and fell back to sleep.
This week promises to be a crazy week. Two full days and a half day on Wed.
I am cooking most of THanksgiving here at my house and I am just trying to get the entire thing timed out in my brain because as most of you know I then pack it up and bring it down to my in laws. I am doing most of it. I just found out that one of my sil is bringing cole slaw but she never let me know.
I was planning on making my grandmother's cole slaw recipe but I can do that for Christmas.
Let me explain the story of in laws with no stove. My in laws live about 40 minutes away from us. They own their own home and have lived there for about 40 years. They are both in their 80's. One of my sil's (none of whom can cook) lives with them. ABout 5 years ago mil got sick with a very severe case of pneumonia. She was in the hospital for about a month and then put into rehab for for at least 6 weeks. When she came home she was on oxygen. Around this same time their gas oven broke. Another sil told them not to get it fixed since she was concerned how the gas stove would mix with the oxygen. Now she was only on oxygen at night when she was asleep. I don't even think she uses the oxygen any more but if she does it is only at night but older sil does not allow them to get the oven fixed since she has scared them into thinking the house would blow up if they used a gas stove. mil and fil get by with their toaster oven and micro. My sil will allow them to use their gas range for some cooking but not the stove. So for the last few years I have cooked the turkey and brought it down to their house.
This year I told my mil I would take care of everything else and dh and I are pretty happy about this. I don't cook with a lot of cream sauces and when we went to older sil's house the catered dinner that she had only had sauces on them. My dss had very little to eat. My one ds's favorite ice cream is vanilla and he likes very plain things. So now I can make what they like. I just have to get the menu planned and get the timing because I have to factor in travel time and dinner must be on the table at 2.
For me the best part of cooking is that I am usually so tired after cooking that I don't eat much. The bad part of cooking is that I don't have time for our family Thanksgiving tradition. When we would go somewhere else for Thanksgiving I would make fried bread. Take bread dough, cut it into pieces and pan fry it in oil. Yes lots of calories but it is a recipe from my grandmother. I don't make it often but it helps the boys to relate to their great grandmother (she died when my youngest was about 8 so he knew her)
Well off to start the day. Church, nursing home, help with costumes at the local high school and then grocery shop. Maybe I will be back later.
