Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

Good SUnday morning everyone. SOrry I haven't been around this week. For the last week between everything going on I have just had the strength to read the posts and not post myself. I think the week took a toll on me. Friday night I was up at 3am and this morning I was up at 2 am. Yesterday I didn't get back to sleep but this morning I read and then watched some tv and fell back to sleep.

This week promises to be a crazy week. Two full days and a half day on Wed.

I am cooking most of THanksgiving here at my house and I am just trying to get the entire thing timed out in my brain because as most of you know I then pack it up and bring it down to my in laws. I am doing most of it. I just found out that one of my sil is bringing cole slaw but she never let me know. :confused3 I was planning on making my grandmother's cole slaw recipe but I can do that for Christmas.

Let me explain the story of in laws with no stove. My in laws live about 40 minutes away from us. They own their own home and have lived there for about 40 years. They are both in their 80's. One of my sil's (none of whom can cook) lives with them. ABout 5 years ago mil got sick with a very severe case of pneumonia. She was in the hospital for about a month and then put into rehab for for at least 6 weeks. When she came home she was on oxygen. Around this same time their gas oven broke. Another sil told them not to get it fixed since she was concerned how the gas stove would mix with the oxygen. Now she was only on oxygen at night when she was asleep. I don't even think she uses the oxygen any more but if she does it is only at night but older sil does not allow them to get the oven fixed since she has scared them into thinking the house would blow up if they used a gas stove. mil and fil get by with their toaster oven and micro. My sil will allow them to use their gas range for some cooking but not the stove. So for the last few years I have cooked the turkey and brought it down to their house.

This year I told my mil I would take care of everything else and dh and I are pretty happy about this. I don't cook with a lot of cream sauces and when we went to older sil's house the catered dinner that she had only had sauces on them. My dss had very little to eat. My one ds's favorite ice cream is vanilla and he likes very plain things. So now I can make what they like. I just have to get the menu planned and get the timing because I have to factor in travel time and dinner must be on the table at 2.

For me the best part of cooking is that I am usually so tired after cooking that I don't eat much. The bad part of cooking is that I don't have time for our family Thanksgiving tradition. When we would go somewhere else for Thanksgiving I would make fried bread. Take bread dough, cut it into pieces and pan fry it in oil. Yes lots of calories but it is a recipe from my grandmother. I don't make it often but it helps the boys to relate to their great grandmother (she died when my youngest was about 8 so he knew her)

Well off to start the day. Church, nursing home, help with costumes at the local high school and then grocery shop. Maybe I will be back later.

Saturday's QOTD: Ok, so we are smack dab in the middle of the holidays...what is your "must have" food and how can you make it more workable with your goals of being healthy?

Oooh, I can't resist homemade scalloped potatoes with lots of cheese and butter . . . I thought about doing a healthy version with reduced fat cheese and less butter but I've decided to go with a small batch of the traditional recipe. I've been thinking about scalloped potates for over a week now. If I go ahead and have them, I will get over my craving. Or I can try to eat a bunch of other things that won't satisfy my craving, and then give in to my craving. I pick option #1 because it will do the least amount of damage. :)

Thanks LuvBaloo and sahbushka :goodvibes

Actually walked 30mins today. I was tired, but I did it anyway lol. Now I'm watching Enchanted :lovestruc

Good job on the walking! That is one of the easiest ways to get more activity in your life. Helps you get trained for those Disney trips, too! :thumbsup2

donac, you are such a great daughter-in-law! :goodvibes Your in-laws should talk with the company that supplies the oxygen. It's really not a volatile as your sil believes. My father-in-law was on oxygen 24/7 for several years. We regularly burned fires in fireplaces, had candles and cooked and he was there with us the whole time. Never an issue. It's probably too late for this year but maybe next year. Or could they get an electric stove? Then no one would have to worry.

I hope that you can get back on your regular sleep schedule. Waking up and not being able to go back to sleep is the pits!

The Lion King was wonderful. Gets me in the mood for our upcoming trip. DS is very sad today though missing it. Luckily he gets to go decorate a gingerbread house at the neighbor's for a local contest -- she makes a party of it for her grandkids and always includes DS, which is very thoughtful. I will go and put the roast in the crockpot and spend the rest of the day doing things around the house. It is snowing here so I am glad to stay home and nest!

Have a great day, all!

Happy Saturday!
I got a 0.6pound loss this week, which is little but I'm happy with it! :goodvibes
The girls and I went to the pool this morning for the kids swimming lessons, and I swam lengths for 25minutes. Got the most in that I've ever done in one shot :cool1: I'm happy that I am feeling less self-conscious at the pool that I was last year!:thumbsup2

for turkey dinners, the unhealthy part I love is the stuffing and the dinner roll. I always make sure to make at least 2 veggies I like, and to have a yummy salad, so that I eat at least half a plate of good stuff. I like to add a few cranberries or raisins and some celery to the stuffing, to give it extra flavour. That way I don't want to cover the flavour of the stuffing with gravy, which I used to do. Also before having a second helping of the stuffing, I have another helping of veggies. :thumbsup2

I also love using the leftover turkey to make turkey pot pie! Instead of using a pie shell, this year I tried putting it in a casserole dish (chopped up turkey, peas, corn, carrots, and some low fat cream of chicken soup) then just put pastry on top. Still tastes great, but a lot of calories gone with less pastry :thumbsup2

Have a great day everybody! I haven't opened the weigh ins yet, but I'll get to them later!

Hey congrats--swimming is a lot. I only tread water for 15 minutes when I started, then gradually swam. When I swam on thu. I did for 45 minutes. I had forgotton how much I liked it. Too bad though--just one time--with the swim cap on, and conditioner with washing it after and more conditioner--killed my hair! We have really harsh showers there too though. Sounds llike a great idea with the pot pie.

QOTD: My must haves are green bean casserole and stuffing/dressing! I only make them for holidays so it is a very special to me! LOL! Saw a recipe this morning on FN for what to do with leftover stuffing: Roll it in egg, bread crumbs and then fry it! Stuffing Balls! Sounds good to me and the chef also made turkey pot pies with leftover green bean casserole, might have to try that too! I'm the only one in the house who eats green bean casserole so I may want to try that.

Got my Christmas village set up on my mantle with extra little lights added. Not feeling my best today. Slight headache and tired. May try and take a nap before the Patriots game is on at 4:15. DD2 is fighting something too. Plan on doing at least 2 miles on the elliptical tonight while watching Amazing Race. Weight is up a little this weekend so I will get back to work in the morning and hope to reach my goal of 160 by Thursday morning. Going to work really hard on Wednesday and hopefully get in a walk with my neighbor. Also plan on a 3 mile elliptical ride on Thursday morning and a WATP workout before going to our friends at 12:30.

There I've made my plan for the week. Now I just have to stick to it!

Gave myself the 15 pound clippie though I hope to change it to 20 by the end of the week!

Saturday's QOTD: Ok, so we are smack dab in the middle of the holidays...what is your "must have" food and how can you make it more workable with your goals of being healthy?
Stuffing is my favorite. We're going out to eat this year, and I"m grateful the restaurant we're going to does not have a buffet, so I will get my serving, and that's all I'll have. On the holidays I like to enjoy those foods that are traditional, and try to keep portion sized reasonable for the most part.

I'm down .1. :lmao: I'm laughing because I would probably call a gain of .1 a maintain. ;)
:rotfl:Too funny Lisa. .1 down, is .1 down!! :thumbsup2

The food threads are ABUNDANT over on the Community Board! If you don't want to be reading about turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese (who knew this was a t.giving food??), mashed potatoes, gravy and lots of other yummy stuff.... STAY AWAY! I don't know how I will face my lunch of cottage cheese and pretzels after spending the last 15 minutes reading some of those food threads! What was I thinking???................P
You make my mac and cheese craving come back. We go to panera a lot for lunch/dinner, and always get a soup and bread which is pretty point/calorie friendly, and the other night we were there, and they have a new signature mac and cheese and the posters are everywhere and it looks so good. I just looked up the calories, and a small is 490 cal with 30gm fat, large is 980 with 61 gms fat. Not worth it to me. I think I need to try a ww mac and cheese recipe soon.

Well I'm thrilled to say I'm only up 1 pound now from before I went on our trip!
nice job getting right back on track after vaca. It does make all the difference.

I actually had awesome numbers. Down 4.2 for the week! I'm .9 away from 20 pounds!
whoo hoo!!:thumbsup2

I also love using the leftover turkey to make turkey pot pie! Good idea with the pastry. My aunt used to do the casserole dish too, and instead of pastry on top she'd put stuffing on top and bake it that way, and it was awfully good.

I am cooking most of THanksgiving here at my house and I am just trying to get the entire thing timed out in my brain because as most of you know I then pack it up and bring it down to my in laws. Dona, you are a saint, and you must be like the energizer bunny, you're constantly running. Hope the week goes well.

That is such a good idea, and it's so true about depriving ourselves and then eating so much else because we didn't have what we really wanted in the first place. It's the holidays, and we should celebrate and enjoy those special foods that are only around at this time. We just need to maintain a little control.
Glad you enjoyed the Lion King. I keep hearing the ads for Boston, and am contemplating it. You're trip is right around the corner. Once Thanksgiving is over, it's Christmas before you know it. Keep the snow out there please. ;)

I went to ww yesterday, and every year the week before thanksgiving she passes out paper plates and has us all write down the foods we will be eating, or want to eat- the meal on one side, and the desserts on the other. They she tells us to decide how much of each food we want to eat to be satisfied, and then we tally up the points, and when you figure out the weekly allowance points with your daily points, ideally we could stay on track for the week, and still see a loss. My leader is so funny, and if anyone got less than 25 points for the total, they had to redo it because thanksgiving is not a day to diet.
The other big thing she reccommends is to have a good high protein breakfast, like an omelette, on thanksgiving, and again on friday, to help prevent the carb-fest from continuing all weekend.

Hope everyone has a good week leading up to t-giving, and all of you from countries that don't celebrate thanksgiving this week, hope to see your names up in the biggest loser list next week.

OK, back on track! Just did 2.5 miles on the elliptical. Hoping to go have my blood tests in the morning if DD2 doesn't wake up with a fever. 99.6 right before bed and they've been sending kids home at 99.5. Cough is going back to how it started so that's not good! Need to do some errands at some point tomorrow though it may be after DH comes home from work.

Time to do some crunches while watching The Amazing Race. Night all!

Making some turkey chili tomorrow for supper.

Hello all. I am sorry I haven't been on today or done a QOTD. I don't know how many of you branch out of this thread but I am a member of the DIS Diva's ladies only trip and one of our dearest friends passed away today. She posted a lot around the boards. Her name is Dawn/fairykin. Please give good thought to her family as they deal with this.

QOTD: If you had one day left in this world what activity would you do?

As for me, I would want my kids to remember something amazing and fun. Since I am not near Disneyland I would take my kids on a hike through the mountains and end the day star gazing laying on our backs in a field on a soft blanket holding hands and talking about the stars.

Will miss you Dawn!

Sarah

Shall we start off for the QOTD for friday?

We are going into the week of Thanksgiving...what are you thankful for? How can you use this to help with your motovation for weight loss?

Since we'll be at WDW over Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for my DVC and will use it to make healthy meals in the villa so I don't come home with too much extra weight after vacation. I've got good plans in place for my eating while we're away, and hopefully I'll be able to stick with it!

Saturday's QOTD: Ok, so we are smack dab in the middle of the holidays...what is your "must have" food and how can you make it more workable with your goals of being healthy?

I don't know if I really have a "must have" food as far as traditional Thanksgiving food goes. I like turkey, and that's healthy. Our Thanksgiving dinner will be at 1900 Park Fare and my must have food there is the chilled strawberry soup. I'm going to look up the recipe and figure out the points so I can at least track it accurately. I'm trying to figure out how to sneak some out with me to have for breakfast the next morning!

I'm down a little bit this week, but hoping to be down more when I weigh in on Wed. I need to focus on exercising more, but I'm so busy doing laundry and getting everything ready that it's hard to find the time. I got a little bit of free step in tonight, but I really need to get in the shower and get ready for work now!

Sorry for your loss :flower3::grouphug:
what a question to make us think.
If I had only one day left I'd stay home, and turn off the phone.
I'd make pancakes with my girls for breakfast, and eat watching a movie that makes them laugh just to hear them giggle. I'd play a board game as a family. Then we'd put on some disney music and dance while guessing the movie the song came from. I'd order pizza for dinner, and at the kids bedtime, I'd read with the kids, and then DH would secretly videotape me & the girls when I sang to them at bedtime, so they'd have a record of the songs I made up for each of them and all the other songs I sing as ni-night songs. Then I'd make my DH dance to our wedding song before cuddling up to watch a movie and fall asleep in his arms.

Oh-- I can't answer that question-- it's too sad. I know that screen name.

Ray Bradbury wrote a great short story--I think it was the last day on earth that tells it a lot like you guys are. I have a warm orange kitty on my lap or I'd go find out the actual title.

DS's robotics team took 1st place overall championship Saturday at our regional robotics tournament!!!!!!!!!!:cheer2::woohoo::cheer2: That was the highest award given that day!!!

The boys also took home 1st place for the Robotics portion of the competition. We are going to States competition in two weeks!!

I'm telling you.... if nervous energy burns calories, then I was GOLDEN on Saturday! We did so great, but had a few trouble spots during the semi-finals and finals rounds and I really didn't think we had come in above 2nd on the Robotics portion.... and the 1st place overall championship.... You could have KNOCKED ME OVER WITH A FEATHER!!! I was FLOORED.... in fact, I actually teared up... I was SO proud of the boys (and myself and the other coaches!!). It was SUCH an exciting day.

Anyhow... that is primarily why I wasn't here all weekend. After Saturday's big day, I laid low yesterday. I slept 11 hours Saturday night! I was truly exhausted. But I am feeling great and back on track now. I got up at the ugly hour of 4:45 am on Saturday before the competiton to make SURE that I got in a 30 minute workout that day. Eating was difficult, at best... but I did well for breakfast and lunch (brought my own salad and fruit so I wouldn't be tempted by the pizza and pastries for sale)... and managed to just have a half portion of my favorite dinner during our celebration at Olive Garden (DS's choice!).DD and I shared the entree, so we BOTH saved calories! I also avoided the breadsticks and had two portions of lightly dressed salad with no cheese. Drink of choice was seltzer.

I was going to skip dessert, but DH and DS went into Friendly's to get ice cream (I stayed in the car so as not to be tempted) and they brought me out a small cone of peppermint stick because they know it is one of my favorites and it is only available seasonally. I enjoyed every guilty lick!! Plus it was sweet of them to remember how much I like it.

Saturday's QOTD: Ok, so we are smack dab in the middle of the holidays...what is your "must have" food and how can you make it more workable with your goals of being healthy?

Well... when I think of T.giving food, I primarily think of my cousin's onion casserole. We only have it at T.giving and Easter, and I NEVER make it at home. So come Friday (when I celebrate with my family) I will take a good size portion of onion casserole, some veggies and maybe a bit of stuffing... and that will be it. I don't care about the turkey, or mashed potatoes, or gravy, or green bean casserole (even though I have to make it every year). I am spending my calories on what I LOVE and that is onion casserole. Nothing "light" or "diet" about the casserole, and since I don't make it, I can't make any modifications... but that is okay for enjoying just twice a year.

Same goes for dessert. My aunt makes lemon meringue pie (primarily because I love it!). I will skip all other desserts and just enjoy one large piece of that lemon pie. It will be delicious and delightful and I can't WAIT!

Thursday is a bit different.... we celebrate with DH's family that day. There is TONS and TONS of food (sinful amounts, truthfully). But I haven't developed any "can't miss" favorites. DBIL's wife does the cooking and she is a FANTABULOUS cook. She usually has a THEME every year and makes the side dishes to go along with the theme... so other than the basics of turkey, stuffing, and potato, the sides change frequently.

Last year there were THREE different stuffings, and at least 6 or 8 other sides, not including the potatoes and turkey!! And every one of them was coated with cheese, cream, butter, etc. Yummy, but OVER THE TOP fattening! And of course, this is AFTER a full hour or two of appetizers and a soup course!!

This year I am bringing oven roasted root vegetables as a side (sweet potato, onions, parsnips, carrots, leeks, maybe butternut squash). I will enjoy a bit of turkey, my root vegetables, and maybe one or two other small portions of sides and that is IT!!

I would like to bring along a lighter dessert to share that day also.... just not sure what yet. My pineapple angel food cake didn't go over well last year... I was the only one who ate it! DH's family does much less "traditional" T.giving desserts... usually ice cream, squares and cookies (made by the DOZENS by DMIL), and cheese pie (like loose cheesecake). Plus everyone is SO FULL from the overwhelming quantity of appetizer and dinner foods, that dessert is kind of an afterthought.

My family does much more traditional desserts on Friday... apple pie, pumpkin pie, mince pie, the much-loved lemon meringue pie, indian puddding (YUM also!) and ice cream for the kids. I'm not a big pie person, so I will be content with just the lemon pie on Friday (although I may put a serving of indian pudding aside for myself to save for another day!). And we don't do soup course or appetizers at my family, so everyone still has room for dessert and we look forward to it!

Well... I certainly rambled on long enough about that!!

QOTD: If you had one day left in this world what activity would you do?

Well... the old joke goes... "A man's doctor told him he had one day left to live. So he spent it at his child's swim meet... because we know those meets last FOREVER!"

But I'm sure that occasionally the same could be said for many kids activities/sports. I've heard that wrestling meets last even longer than swim meets!

Anyhow.... seriously... I know that this is a Disney board and this is kind of the "expected" answer... but I would want to spend it at Disney with my DH, my kids, my parents and any other family members who were available. Some of my warmest, most special memories of my kids' lives are from our Disney trips. I would sit in front of Cinderella Castle with my family around me... watch SpectroMagic and Wishes... eat a Mickey pop (or two! ;) ) soak in the atmosphere and music of the Magic Kingdom.

Second choice would either be a day at our family's summer vacation home (a rental that we no longer have access to after 10+ years of renting... it felt like home :guilty: ) or just a day in my home, surrounded by family and friends... talking, laughing, watching home movies and looking at pictures and just remembering good times.

I hope everyone here is doing well. I did spend some time this morning catching up on everyone's weekend. I need to run and do laundry now. Have a great day everyone!..............P

I had a great week. Stayed OP, journaled and weighed out proper serving sizes, drank gallons of water and exercised. But I did not lose anything! Stayed the same! Hopefully its just water weight due to TOM and next week will reflect a delayed loss.

Wow, everything in your post made me happy! It looks like you are making great choices and have a great plan for this coming week! Way to go! What an inspiration!

I had a great week. Stayed OP, journaled and weighed out proper serving sizes, drank gallons of water and exercised. But I did not lose anything! Stayed the same! Hopefully its just water weight due to TOM and next week will reflect a delayed loss.

Stick to it and it will come off! I worked out a lot last week but had a minimal loss at my ww wi. The next day I stepped on my home scale and it went down 2 lbs so this week I am expecting a much better loss! It will come off when it is ready as long as you stick to it! Good job!

As for todays QOTD lets make it a lot more joyful and Disney related because hey, what is more joyful than that?

I heard once of a band that went to Disneyland and they broke some rules of the trip so the band teacher punished them by making them ride IASW continuously for an hour! If you had to ride one ride for an hour without getting off, which ride would it be?

My favorite ride is BTMRR but I don't think I could handle it for an hour sooooo, I think I would have to go with TSMM because I could keep trying to improve on my score and since I was doing right then without time between I think I could improve a lot faster and understand more nuances of the game!

Have a great day all! Make sure to drink your water....in fact, I challenge each of you to drink 8 oz of water as soon as you finish reading this post!

Good morning all! :goodvibes

sahbushka,, I am so sorry to hear of the passing your friend, Fairykin. I know of her posts from the Disneyland boards. What a sad day for the Disboards and especially the Divas.

Gave myself the 15 pound clippie though I hope to change it to 20 by the end of the week!

Tracey, that new clippie looks good on you! :thumbsup2 I bet it won't be there long at the rate you are going.

These are great strategies for any big celebration or holiday meal! Thanks for sharing them, Kathy!

QOTD: If you had one day left in this world what activity would you do?

I have to think about this one for a little bit. I loved your answer, Shannon. My dad used to always say that life is hanging by a thread and that is so true. I tell DH when we are rushing around doing things for clients that our clients would miss us for a week or two but family would miss us for the rest of their lives. That is why we really try to put our family first in our family business.

Congratulations to your team, pjlla, for winning the championship and going on to State finals! :cool1: It's so nice that the team's hardwork was recognized.

I don't blame you for having a peppermint ice cream -- it is my favorite flavor!

I did my WATP video this morning so I am off to practice piano before my lesson today. I can actually play about a dozen Christmas songs -- I never thought that would happen when I started in June!
Have a great day all!

QOTD: If you had one day left in this world what activity would you do?

Great QOTD!!!

If I had a day left, I would invite all the people that mean the world to me and spend the day with them either in Hawaii or Disney World. Those are my two favorite places. We could do anything in either of those places and I would be happy. :goodvibes

I had a good, but crazy weekend. I went to see 'The Blind Side' on Saturday night. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I was teary eyed through the first 45 min.:sad1: I work with kids who remind me of the main character Michael Oher, so it really touched me.

I am really motivated to get on track this week. I feel like this could be the week I could see a nice loss on the scale!

I hope everyone has a Magical Day!!!!pixiedust:

Sat QOTD: Thanksgiving must-have food?
Everything! :rotfl: I am a sweet-tooth person but I also love the T-Day staples like stuffing and cranberries. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and it's the biggest family celebration of the entire year. My mom hosts and so there are no foods I don't like. I'm realistic that Thursday will not be a shining moment in my weight loss journey. But my plan is to enjoy teeny portions of everything. Really thinking about the food before it goes on my plate and in my mouth. Which of these foods are really my faves? Also, my goal is to do my own 5k on Thanksgiving morning. It'll just be on my parent's treadmill and I'll be walking half of it, but it'll be a good start to the day. :thumbsup2

Sun QOTD: Last day?
This is a tough question for me. I think I would do a Disney trip as well with as many family members that could come. I think I'd want to be active and doing things so that I could really savor every moment.

If you had to ride one ride for an hour without getting off, which ride would it be?
I would pick Toy Story Mania. I like that I have an active part in the experience. I like Soarin, but I think I may get bored riding it an hour straight just sitting there. I love love love the Indy ride at DL and Rockin Roller Coaster at the Studios, but I don't think I could go on an action ride for an hour straight.

QOTD: Spend time with all my friends and family at Disney!

Only up 1.2 for the weekend and I've done 6 miles so far today with 2 more to come in about an hour. Really want to reach 20 pounds by the end of the week and 20 pounds total for the challenge. Finally had my blood tests done this morning after waiting for almost an hour. Did some Christmas shopping for the family including stocking stuffers.

Time to go get DD2 and then wait for DD1. Have 1 more show from last week to watch on the DVR so that will be my last 2 miles on the elliptical! Also gotta get drinking my water.

Have a great afternoon!

QOTD:
I am thankful for the health of my DH and DDs.
I am thankful for REDWALKER for getting me fit and healthy and our great walks. (Hope we can do it more than once a month soon!)
I am thankful for all of my friends and clients.
I am thankful for all of you who inspire me and make me laugh and smile and think positively every day!

Did my first 2 miles, 2-3 more to go after putting DD1 on the bus.

I am thankful for the health of my husband and my kids. For their undying support and love.
I am thankful for my parents, Nana, sisters and brother. Life would not be the same without any of them.
I am thankful for tigger813 for first letting me help her, and then for having her help me. It is wonderful to have someone to bounce ideas off of, and talk about things with that are so important to me. It really has been wonderful. I look forward to our talks all the time.
I am thankful for my perseverance even when people thought I would not recover from my accident, I did. Go me!
Lastly, I am thankful to God, for giving me a wonderful life. I will try not to take it for granted.
