What is your favorite season and why?

Tuesday's QOTD:
What is your favorite season and why?

Summer. Warmth. Also I have been affected by seasonal affective disorder--it rains a lot here. I work in a meat dept. In the winter I'm cold all the time. Hmm. I need to get the electric blankets set up. I live under one in the family room all winter. I'm really looking forward to Halloween though-especially since it's on a Sat night, more kids!
Come little children, I'll take thee away / Into a land of enchantment / Come little children, the times come to play / Here in my garden of magic. --Hocus Pocus

We really do the house-- we are one of those people- it's crazy how much stuff we have now. We have kids that come in the house every year just to look. Last year we had a group of foreign exchange students come in and look around-- it was great. This means there is a lot of cleaning to do in the next month- you have 15 cats it's not the easiest. That's ok though. There used to be the big payoff-- lotsa candy candy candy and it was so fun to put the kids costumes together, but mine are old now...lol almost 19 and 21. So now we have the house and I get to open a bottle of desert wine for the night. This year I have an awesome pineapple wine for the night :)

Wow, I have been MIA for quite a while. I don't know what has gotten in to me lately. I just seem to have lost all of my motivation. I sit at work thinking I will get on the treadmill when I get home and instead I sit in front of the tv eating chocolate. I just can't seem to get my head back in the game. I have been gaining for the last 4 weeks now. I currently weigh 195 pounds.

Still, this week I have given it a pretty good go. I have been tracking what I eat and trying to eat better. Also, thyey started a walking club at work at lunchtimes. I went for the first one yesterday (it is on a Tuesday and Thursday). It was nice apart from an evil wasp that was trying to kill me. I have a huge phobia of wasps.

Anyway, QOTD, I just love this time of year. The weather is crisp. The food is awesome. Also, we usually go to Florida in November so I have that to look forward to usually. Although, we are not going until next year this time. :sad1: I generally like it from September time up until after Christmas. So not strictly Fall (or Autumn) as we say here but mostly.

I really hope I can get my motivation back. I need to visit this board more often. It is a great support network.:cheer2:

Happy Autumn to everyone (well in a few hours anyway).

Tuesday's QOTD:
What is your favorite season and why?

I prefer warm to cold so you would think summer but .... living in MA I prefer Spring especially when you get to open the windows in the house for the first time. Clean up the yard from the winter mess. Get out the deck furniture. Days start to get longer.

Congrats to the Biggest Losers!

My favourite season is fall - so far, September here has been near spectacular, sunny, warm, yet cool. I have a 5k coming up on Sunday and looking good for that - 17 degrees celcius and sunny.

Can anyone tell me where to find this week's COW?

I was sick on Friday, and still having trouble manoevering this big thread.

Also, how do you attach the clippie (which I love by the way).

My favorite season is fall...that seems to be the most noticeable "change", the cool breezes come in, the leaves start to change...very refreshing! :goodvibes

Molly, I'm sorry about your grandfather.

Congrats to all the losers!!

Linda here is the link to the current COW:

The COW can be hard to find so I always post a link to the current COW in post 4 of this thread

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=33517490&postcount=4

The coaching schedule is there and the clippie, etc. I am trying to keep all the important info updated on that first page so it is easy to find.

Have fun with the COW! :goodvibes

Go team! Congratulations to all of us for losing a total of 84 pounds -- we are well on our way to a team loss goal of 500 pounds! :cheer2:

Monday QOTD:
I have lots of different lunches that I like to fix that are quick and easy. I work nights so I'm home during the day and can fix what I like since no one else is here at that time. I'll make a spinach salad with low fat shredded cheese, McCormick salad topping, and fat free western dressing, or sometimes I'll grill a Johnsonville Turkey Cheddar Brat. If I'm out somewhere and have to grab fast food, I get a kids meal at Arby's (Jr. roast beef sand, apple sauce, and diet coke) or a BBQ pork sandwich at Culver's or one of the locally owned ice cream shops. The only problem with the ice cream shop is they don't have any healthy sides, so I ended up eating a bag of chips with my sandwich last night while I watched DD12's softball practice. I went straight there from a meeting at work. I should have thought ahead to grab some fruit from the cafeteria before I left the hospital, but at the time I didn't think about the fact that I wouldn't be getting home til 8 and was going to have to eat dinner at the ball field.

Tuesday QOTD:
I like everything but winter, but I guess summer was my favorite this year. I don't like the heat, but we had a very mild summer so it wasn't a problem this year. I love being on a more relaxed schedule, not having to pull the kids out of bed at 6:45am and making sure homework is done in the evening. We're still very busy with softball and stuff, but it's a more fun kind of busy. I have a lot more energy in the summer thanks to the longer days.

Saturday QOTD:
What are your favorite go to breakfasts while losing weight or maintaining?

I usually have a protein bar of some kind.

Sunday's QOTD:
Besides Disney where is someplace that you would like to vacation at

Europe -- We are in the planning stage of a trip for next summer. We want to take about three to four weeks to see and do as much as we can.

Monday's QOTD:
What are some of your go-to lunchs that you fix at home or take to work when your rushed for time and don't have leftovers or something to pull out quickly?

I'll usually grab a non-fat yogurt and a banana, or some string cheese.

Tuesday's QOTD:
What is your favorite season and why?

I'm another fan of fall! I love those first few mornings were there is frost on the ground and the leaves are changes colors, but it still warms up during the day.

Tuesday's QOTD:
What is your favorite season and why?

As usual I am a day late and a dollar short here.... just now answering yesterday's question...

My favorite season is summer. I like it warm and I LOVE the long days... I love July 4th and summer vacation and no homework battles. I HATE the winter and would leave New England in a heartbeat if I could. That said, the kids like winter because they ski and snowboard. I would like the Fall, but I hate what it leads to, so my favorite season is summer.

Sorry, but I forgot to multi-quote, but to the person who copied that recipe for the Inside Out eggroll from the CB, it sounds really yummy... thanks! I'm not sure about using chicken broth instead of the vinegar and soy sauce though.... I think it would really be lacking in that authentic asian taste... but you could certainly try it. Are you concerned about the sodium or do you just not like vinegar and soy?? I'm thinking of tossing some chow mein noodles on top before serving to provide that crunch you would e missing from the egg roll wrapper........................P

Tuesday's QOTD:
What is your favorite season and why?

Ok, I will be late too! My favorite season is any season with sunshine. Can't handle more than 2 says without sunny skies. Fortunately for me, Denver is sunny 330 days a year on average. Yesterday and today may be ruining that average - snow warnings on the first day of autumn - mother nature has got to be kidding!:confused:

Hey everyone,

Happy Hump day everyone and welcome to the first FULL day of Fall!!

Congratulations Shewelch, 4.54% is impressive. Keep up the great work. Congratulations to the rest of the Biggest Losers too! Keep the momentum going everyone.

To anyone who is like me and struggling to get into the grove, today is the day to get back in that wagon. Join me and climb back aboard. We can do this. Today is a new season and a new day that is full of possibilities. We CAN and will conquer this! :car: For some reason I feel like I can do this today!! I have to - its insane that I can't get back on track when I KNOW how to do this.

Wednesdays QOTD:

What are your favorite books that have to do with health & Dieting?

Mine:
Bob Greene's original book that he did with Oprah - Make the connection - 10 steps to a better body.

His other books aren't that great. He let money go to his head and sold out in his beliefs of what healthy food are to appeal to the masses.

I also like Jillian Michaels newest book Master your metabolism.

Tips from Curtis Stone's Cooking segment on BL last night. I thought this might be useful for everyone:

Here is the info from the cooking session:

Portion Control

Lesson: Curtis Stone shows off a 3-4 oz. piece of chicken, this is the PROPER portion size!

Fact: Typical restaurants are way off, sometimes two to four times higher than the proper portion size.

Solution: Curtis Stone suggests using a smaller plate. Then draw the plate in quarters where half of the plate should be vegetables, a quarter of the plate should be whole grain starch and a quarter of the plate should be food lower in water. Meanwhile, the vegetables should have a higher water content like green beans, spinach, tomatoes, onions, etc. Use garlic and ginger to make the vegetables more flavorful.

Tip: Compare different sizes of meats that are equal in the same amount of calories. Look for skinless fish, white meat, lean pork tenderloin, very lean red meat such as filet and ground beef.

Cooking Oils

Curtis shows how much lard should go into making a certain dish.

Lesson: Curtis Stone explains that lard and butter are examples of saturated fat, otherwise known as the "bad fats."

Fact: These saturated fats are solid at room temperature, for example, fat outside a steak, the fat found in butter, fat found on chicken skin. If the fat comes from an animal source, it also contains large amounts of cholesterol.

Solution: Try using cooking methods such as baking, broiling, grilling or poaching because it doesn't require adding fat. Remember, not all fat is bad. Your body needs "good fat" that can be found in avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

Salads

Curtis prepares a healthy salad, minus the unhealthy condiments.

Lesson: Salads sound nice and healthy, but once you add the bacon bits, cheese, and "crispy" chicken, you also add fat and calories.

Fact: Such restaurant dressings you might want to avoid are blue cheese, ranch, and thousand island. These dressings are loaded up in fat and calories.

Solution: Curtis suggests checking out some healthy dressing suggestions on The Biggest Loser website. Remember to add protein to your salad; this could be egg whites, shredded chicken, or shrimp and don't forget to load up on the vegetables.

Starches

Curtis prepares a pasta dinner without the extra calories and fat.

Lesson: There are always smart and clever ways to make healthy pasta without losing the flavor.

Fact: Pasta that contains cream sauce, white flour noodles and sides of white bread are also filled with fat and calories.

Solution: Use whole grain noodles, tomato-based sauces, and load up on the vegetables. To avoid more kinds of unhealthy starches, use brown rice instead of white rice, use whole grain tortillas instead of white bread and avoid potatoes.

Beverages

Contestants on the ranch learn just how many calories are in a typical serving of soda or sweet tea.

Lesson: Curtis Stone shows how much actual sugar goes into a typical can of soda or sweet tea by dumping heaps of sugar into a glass and presenting it the players on the ranch.

Fact: Some players would drink up to four liters of soda per day and with that routine, soda drinkers begin to think soda needs to accompany every meal.

Solution: Substitute soda with unsweetened iced tea, green tea, water and even skim milk, since that provides calcium, as well. Also stay away from alcohol at mealtime since that lowers inhibitions when it comes to food choices, as well.

Snacks

Curtis suggests ways to snack and also provide the protein your body needs.

Lesson: Snacking isn't always a bad thing. In fact, The Biggest Loser encourages three meals and two snacks a day, but each one of those meals and snacks must have protein, since that helps with losing fat and not muscle.

Fact: It's easy to grab a snack like chips, cookies, and candy because of the easy-access. These snacks must be avoided at all times. When a snack contains high protein, it aids in the feeling of being full.

Solution: Try snacking on a low-fat mozzarella cheese stick with an apple, a tangerine with almonds, or even a fresh fruit smoothie, which, when prepared right, can be low in calories and act as the perfect supplement.

Dessert

There are actual healthy substitutions for dessert.

Lesson: During the first few weeks of detoxing your body from unhealthy food, you must avoid the temptation of sugary, high-caloric desserts at all costs.

Fact: While introducing your body to a whole new world of healthy living, it's also the best time to introduce your body to the sweetness of fruit to make up for missing those sugary treats of cookies, cake, etc.

Solution: The perfect dessert after a meal would be fruits like berries and melon.

Well........not so good last night. I had every itention, but I think I was too hungry. I ended up eating stuff I shouldn't have as soon as I got home to stop that starving low blood sugar feeling and then ate what the kids ate - DH is working nights last week and this week and I think its making it worse for me. By the time we get dinner done, do any extra curriculars we have to do and I finish checking DS11's homework I'm exhausted. Its leaving me no planning time.

But.........I think today I feel in the right frame of mind. For lunch today I'm going to Whole foods and picking up a few things.

Great idea about combining stuff and mapping out a plan. Most of the time I read books and think I wouldn't do this or I don't believe in this - but I do believe in that. Sometimes I think I should write my own book- Just for me to read when I need it :) LOL!!

Sorry, but I forgot to multi-quote, but to the person who copied that recipe for the Inside Out eggroll from the CB, it sounds really yummy... thanks! That was me. It wasn't the sodium I was worried about, I just don't have any vinegar. I like your idea of adding some chow mein noodles for the crunch. I think my DD's will like that. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. :goodvibes

Hey everyone,
Wednesdays QOTD:

What are your favorite books that have to do with health & Dieting?

A friend lent me Jillian's book Winning by Losing and I really enjoyed it because it covered more than just exercise and food, and got into some of the emotional/mental issues with weight loss.

And I am also struggling this week. Its been very hectic at home, and yesterday I decided to just take the kids to McDonalds for supper since I didn't have much time before picking them up and getting DD7 to Brownies. I was going to have the Thai Chicken Salad which is 8 points, and I had planned that into my eating for the day. But they were out, so I ended up going with nuggets and fries, and then we had a piece of left over birthday cake at the end of the evening, so I went way over points yesterday, but at least I did journal everything, so that's something. Today will be better!:goodvibes

I meant to comment on that recipe too. It sounds great. Something that might be good is to add some shrimp to it for protein.

Even thought you went over on points it sounds like you did well being conscious and journaling which is an important step when you do splurge. It helps keep it in balance and prospective.
