I feel awful. My landlord deposited my rent check yesterday, it went thru the same time as my direct deposit (which i just set up). As of right now, the check has been paid by my bank, but they said tonight they are going to return it back to me. It was some kind of glitch or what not that they said will be fixed by my next deposit, but whatever the case, my check to my landlord is going to bounce at some point. so I called her, and she was very understanding, and tomorrow when the money is back in my account, I'm bringing that to her along with a returned check fee. In cash!!!!

I'm worried that I will cause her to bounce other checks now though. As of right now, the check is still "paid". Tonight at midnight, it will be returned to my account and I presume asked back from her account. If she has the cash and makes the deposit tomorrow to cover the amount of the check and the fee, shouldn't that cover anything else? She didn't seem to worried, but I am. :guilty:

If she's not worried, you shouldn't be.

I'm sure it will all work out :grouphug:

Anyone in business (this includes landlords) usually know not to "depend" on any money they deposit being in their account until it is actually posted...not pending, but posted. Her bank should need to verify you have the funds in your account before they'll post into hers. This is how our bank works. It goes into a "pending deposit" but doesn't actually show into my availabe balance until its been verified. At any rate, the fact that you called her before hand, explained the situation and didn't try to hide and make excuses probably speaks volumes to the fact that it was a mistake and not you taking advantage. I'm glad you got it straightened out yourself instead of waiting for her to discover the missing money/returned check on her own.

You did everything right by letting her know asap and letting her know what you would be doing to take care of it. She doesn't seem too worried so I'd say she has it covered and you shouldn't worry about it. :flower:

Myst

Honestly, a landlord should be able to weather a few days without one rent payment. ACTUALLY, they should be able to handle a few months without rent payments! As a landlord, you are never guaranteed that your properties will always be occupied, or that your tenants will always pay their rent, or pay it on time. You have to have the ability to cover your bills if your property is vacant or someone is late. It's just the nature of the business...

This is the *main* reason we have not kept any of our houses as rentals after we've....we could cover 1, maybe 2 months, but if anything else went wrong, we'd be up a creek! I just wasn't willing to risk it.

I'm glad you're being up front and taking care of it as soon as possible...and I'm sure your landlord appreciates it, too! Hopefully the bank will have everything straightened out. Oh, and if you find that it was a bank error, rather than something you did, I'd be SURE to make sure they covered your bounced check fees for you! My bank delayed a deposit once by 3 days or so....it just didn't credit. Meanwhile they bounced 3 checks. When I showed them it was their error, they covered all the bounced check fees, and wrote letters to each of the businesses where they bounced by checks, assuring them it was a bank error and not my fault. :) Good luck getting it all straightened out!

It was some kind of glitch or what not that they said will be fixed by my next deposit,

If it is the bank's glitch they should cover any fees for the returned check for you.

I did something like that once and I was practically sick with embarrassment over it. I felt so relieved when it was resolved. You will too. Wishing you the best tomorrow!

I had a bank error a few months ago. It was 100% the banks fault. I did end up bouncing 3 checks because of it. Anyhow, they covered all my fee's in that bank account. Also, they covered any fee's that were charged to me by the 3 bounced checks. Lastly, they wrote letters to all places so that I wouldn't be "blacklisted" from writing them checks.
