Big Love watchers

Makes perfect sense. But, there are lots of people who claim to be Christians or Catholics or other religious affiliations who do things against their organized faith but bring up their faith-based beliefs any time their needed, but they don't necessarily believe what they preach even though they say they live that way.

Gee, that confused me. But, do you get the point I'm trying to make?

Maybe that's what the writers want us to see about the lies that they're living because of "faith."

I think you've got it - 100% :thumbsup2

My holier-than-thou super Roman Catholic aunt, who sticks to her church and her priest like glue, for example. At home, she's sly, conniving and vindictive. She wants the world to believe she's up for sainthood, but those who know her well, know better. ;)

I understand your point. But, it's not just the nasty and doing things that go against faith...Roman and his wives are nasty and do things that go against faith...but they seem like true polygamists. Their roles seem authentic. The reasoning seems there. With Bill, Barb and especially Margene, they just do not act like it is faith driven. Nikki is nasty, but her role seems to be driven by faith of the Principle. (most people do not live a life that is to the letter, no matter how spiritual they are or claim to be)

I think they act like Polygamists, but not faith driven Polygamists...

I think it's because they aren't. It seems that Bill and Barb started out as a normal couple, then had Nicki kind of forced on them, then just added Margene to the mix. And I also think they are trying to live a differant life than the others. On one show Barb told someone that they weren't like those people.

I totally agree. They are polygamists but not driven by the faith. They kind of seemed to have stumbled into it.

They really haven't stumbled, at least according to the HBO Big Love website. If you go there and check out the family histories, it claims that Bill's grandfather, Orville, was heavy into it. I think Bill just chooses to live "his" principle in a more laid back fashion.

In a nutshell, they're all nuts.

Correct me if I am wrong.....but my understanding is that if a Mormon wife dies...she does not go to heaven without her dh, but goes to a sort of holding area....then the dh marries another...and she passes, she goes to the holding area...then dh dies and he takes them all to their kingdom..the woman can not go to the "heavenly kingdom" without the man..so in the after life....they live in polygamy....in their kingdom and have celestial children....so in essence, polygamy is still a part of the Mormon doctrine....Again, this is something that I have read and it was confirmed by a non practicing Mormon.

Hi Chris,
You are partially right. The important doctrine you left out is that a man does not get free entry into heaven. A husband and wife must get there together, so the husband needs the wife to get in, just as the wife needs her husband for entry. The argument could be made that polygamy is still part of the Mormon doctrine because a man can be sealed to more than one wife if a first wife dies, but I (and many other Mormons) believe that husbands and wives will be sorted out in the afterlife and that polygamy will not exist. One of the arguments for this belief I've heard is that so many young children or babies die without the chance of marriage, and many older men and women die without being married in this life, so there will be plenty of singles to make up the difference! Hope that clears things up a bit.

Of course, I've always wondered about second and third marriages (after a spouse dies) in Christianity. I'm not sure I want to share DH with my replacement for all eternity, and I KNOW he doesn't want to share me if I remarry. :lmao: But I guess jealousy doesn't exist in heaven.

I'm not and expert on Mormon sybolism, but I have been told something... The searching for each other through sheets,is a custom from a marriage ceremony..IF the couple finds each other through the sheets it symbolizes they will find each other in the afterlife.. The scene with them eating together on the planet refers to the fact that they believe each family will become the G-d of their own planet.
Did anyone notice that when the songs says i may not always love you,Bill s tipping back Nic?
I hope this hasn't all been discussed before.

I just wanted to say that the above mentioned custom is not part of an LDS marriage ceremony. I am a practicing Mormon, married in the temple, and I've never heard of such a thing. Since the characters and this show is based on the fundamentalist groups, maybe that is something they do; I wouldn't know about that. Anyway, just wanted to set the record straight.

I always thought that the walk through the veils was the search for one another before they meet in their celestial kingdom. From the last response, perhaps this is true?

Just wanted to join the discussion. I stumbled across this show and love it, never thought I would. Is there still an episode left for this season? When It wasn't on this week I thought it was over until next season.

Great discussions here, I have learned quite a bit from this thread.

The final episode is this Sunday.

I didn't know what to think of this show at first, but I really like the way they've slowly developed the characters. It'll be interesting to see how they leave us hanging!

I'm in quite a state. I'm excited to get to see another new episode of Big Love this Sunday, but I'm sad that it will be the last one for a while, but I'm excited that Entourage will be starting again.

I'm also saddened that I won't have a Sopranos fix for a while either. :happytv:

Just a reminder the finale is on tonight. It just started here. :happytv:

Poor Bill! What has he gotten himself into?

I'll miss this show! Uh-oh- Rhonda is going to get it!
