Big Lots--value or junk?

I saw a great sized entry rug (4x6) in the Big Lots ad in the Sunday paper for $19. It is a shag rug. So the debate--do I spend $20 on a "junk" rug that I will need to replace OR save that $20 and put it toward a "better" rug?
Does anyone have experience with Big Lots furniture/rugs/home goods? Does the furniture hold up? I saw a sofa for $299 in the ad--is it going to come apart in a year?
I love to budget and be wise, but not if it's going to end up costing me more later!

We bought our Simmons sectional sofa at Big Lots and we've been very happy with it. After searching 8 or so furniture stores for the perfect sectional, we stopped at Big Lots just to pick up some little stuff and found a bargain...and it was the most comfortable one we had seen yet. We've only had it for about 4 months, but we still talk about how much we love it on an almost daily basis. :)

Now, friends of our happen to have the same one and they have had theirs well over a year, with 2 cats, a dog and a 2 year old - and theirs seems to have held up well.

I bought a mat that goes in front of my washer/dryer from BL and it has held up really well. I have never had a problem with anything I bought from there. I would just look it over really good before you bought it.

I bought a $35.00 computer desk at Big Lots before my freshman year of college - and I sold it just last year - 10 years later for $20.00 and no trouble selling it!

It was built like a tank! It had seen its fair share of abuse (cups without coasters mostly) and the finish did not bubble, warp, or peel.

I had friends who bought a futon there, used it for their primary bed for 2+ years - and sold the frame for 1/2 of what they paid and the the other student buying the frame could get an IKEA mattress - and still come out better than buying a new one.

We bought our wrought iron / slate top - coffee table and end tables when we got married and they are still in brand new condition almost 5 years later. (We actually had to go to a different Big Lots to get one of the end tables - our local store was sold out.)

Their mattresses are the same quality as other furniture stores entry and mid-level products.

If you have young children that tend to climb on furniture when you aren't looking - I'm not sure I would suggest buying a sofa there - and really the only construction quality I would worry about are the seams on sofas with attached backs. If you DO buy a sofa - I would consider a scatter back model instead.

If I were you I would expect furniture from Big Lots to last 3-5 years depending on how heavily it is used. If it's furniture for a more formal living room and used only on occasion- I would think it would last 8-10 years.

As far their their dining sets you can see an obvious lack of quality in the chairs - I would be truly surprised if 80% of their chairs are still in one piece after more than 2 years. Also as far as the wood dining tables, I really don't know how much wear and tear they could take. However, I can see them holding up well if you use a clear lacquer or keep it covered with a table cloth and always use coasters.

If you looking for lamps etc - they all have to be certified by the UL to be sold in the US - so they have to meet safety requirements - so they'll be safe, and other than desk lamps - lamps usually hold up pretty well.

It's a good deal - take it for a test drive - sit on it - use it - feel it - and then go to a 'real' furniture store and compare the quality.

If you or anyone else it looking for a sofa that will hold up like granite - look for a Klaussner retailer new you. They are pricey - however they will hold up VERY well. Ours is almost 5 years old now and look brand new! Our neighbors actually bought the same exact model that we have (except different upholstery and color) because they claim it's the most comfortable sofa they've ever sat on! PLUS it is REALLY comfortable to sleep on for having guests over, days home sick, etc etc.

Hope this helps!

well if your entry way is VERY used like ours is, then expect a lot of wear and tear for any rug. I have 4 children so very few things in our home don't get worn!:lmao: But, $19 isn't too bad for an entry way rug. I bought a cheap braided rug for our mudroom/entry way at the Christmas Tree Shop and I'm actually amazed at how well it's holding uP!

I bought out large living room rug there. I have 2 kids and 2 boxers so it is well used and has held up well. Never bought big furniture there although I always look. They do carry some name brands.

I just had this conversation with my sister about whether or not Big Lots was junk. I have only purchased a cheap one time use Christmas tree from there several years ago so I wasn't sure how their other products were. I asked my sister who is an avid Walmart shopper if she liked them or not. And she told me their products are junk and at the bottom of the barrel as compared to Kmart, Walmart, and Target. Her boyfriend bought a briefcase from there for under $25 and it fell apart in less than a week.

The previous couch we had was from Big Lots and we loved it. Even after a couple years the cushions weren't sagging and we never had a problem with the stitching. It was a microfiber couch and was great. We would still have it had it not been for a house fire we had. Big Lots is just like anywhere else. Some things are better quality than others. Last year our Big Lots had really nice Broyhill closeout stuff. A friend of mine bought a solid wood coffee table and end tables from Big Lots about 8 years ago and they are still going strong. I would be more likely to purchase furniture from Big Lots than other big box stores like Walmart or Kmart.

I have a rug about 18" x 30" with the rubber all the way out past the edge of rug very tight pile an almost no nap to it. Looks simular to the entrance rugs in lot of stores an businesses. I bought it for 3.99 at Big Lots 20 yrs ago an it is still going strong.....love love my rug it's not the prettiest rug ever made but it sure has held up very well.

My pool towels came from big lots in 1993 we abused them by using them an hangin on deck rail in sun till we either used them or i went out weekly gathered up pool towels an washed them....when I moved a couple months ago I left them there for DD an her brood to use as pool towels. I think I paid 2.00 a beach towel an bought 10 of them.

Since 1993 I have bought bath for the house about 4 or 5 times that was used an hung inside on towel rack to dry none of them have held up like the big lot towels....maybe I need to go back to big lots huh

I have noticed some of their furniture is Ashley brand and it could be because it's last year/closed out models. I frequent our local Big Lots and like them for the unusual stuff you find there. I also belong to their "club" where if you spend at least $20.00 10 times in a 12 month period, you get a certificate for 20% off one purchase. If I was going to buy things that I would normally buy in Walmart, etc, I would go there and try and earn my 20% off which I would use on the furniture. I think you just have to browse, know your prices, and go often, because sometimes something was there last time, and now it's gone.

we purchased our couch there last year. We have three dogs, 3 cats and two kids. I figured why spend a ton when the kids and animals will wreck it up. Paid 250.00 (had a coupon for 20% off). Well a year later the couch still looks brand new, is comfortable and I am extremely happy with it. I have known several other people who have bought couches for the same reason I did and they all are happy.

It varies by item, I think. The one we stop at sometimes does have some no-brand junk, but they also have quite a few name brand closeouts that are the same quality as you'd find anywhere else. We've never bought furniture there but like a previous poster we found their towels to be unbelievably nice for the price, especially when compared to more expensive beach towels from places like Kmart and Target.

i used to get random closeout stuff there like scrapbook supplies, cards etc. i recently bought my new vacuume there and love it. it was re-packaged but was in new condition. it is a bagless and does such a good job of sucking up the cats hair. my mother got a shark electric broom thing there years ago and she loves it. she has a half dozen other vacuume/steamers/etc and its her favorite.

i think it depends on the brand, both appliances were name brand. i have seen some stuff like pic frames falling apart in the store. i bought ornaments there as party decorations and they were all scratched when i took them out of the box at the party. i ended up putting them back in and returning them the next day. i also bought a lampshade and while it is very pretty i can only fit a mini light bulb under it which i thought was odd.

Bought alot of stuff there (household stuff like rugs towels and curtains) as well as toys and now were looking at buying some furniture there as well. Other than one set of sheets that looked a little cheep but still worked for what I needed them for (seets to take to the cabin on our camping trips) I haven't ever had a purchase I've been even close to regretting.

We bought a leather couch about 7 or 8 years ago for my wife's photo studio. It spent 3 or 4 years there before she decided to change decor. The couch came home to our family room. It still looks really nice and is comfortable to sit or sleep on. She wanted to sell it and get a sleeper sofa, but it was so nice we didn't want to get rid of it.

BL is a good alternative to the higher priced furniture stores.

Another pro Big Lots person here! I think of it like somewhere between a Target and a dollar store. You need to be careful what you buy. Sure, there is some junk, but there are a lot of great deals as well!

I have to say, I like Big Lots. Never know what you're gonna find...I have seen some REALLY nice furniture there--name brands for pretty cheap!

I love Big Lots, I'm there all the time and always find a lot of organic things. Last fall I bought tons of boxes of organic tea bags, organic cereals, snacks and drinks, organic or natural beauty products too. I never thought to check out their furniture or rugs....since we are in need of both looks like be checking into that! Thanks for the tips.

Let's see---our queen-size bedroom set that we've have about 8 years; couch and love seat for about 6; bunk beds bought about 8 years ago; computer chair, several playroom shelf units, computer desk; 6 chair/dining table set----ALL bought at Big Lots with NO issues! Yes, I am sure they have their share of "junk" but we look carefully at what we buy and are happy customers of Big Lots!
