Big Gripe in Parks and Elsewhere--People Walking Backwards!

Well, I'm not to sure where to post this but the parks board seems as good a place as any.

One of my bigest gripes in large, public places (Disney and elsewhere), is the number of people one encounters back asswards! I'm talking about the habit many have of walking backwards, not paying a bit of attention to what's behind them. If it were a deserted island, well, maybe--but then they have the risk of running into a palm tree!

I don't know how many times I've had to dodge someone walking backwards, in a crowded area such a a theme park, store, mall, etc. who is walking backwards, totally oblivious to the fact that there are other people in close proximity to him whom he might just bump into if he doesn't watch where he is going. Usually these fools are continuing a conversation with someone else and walk facing the other person, continuing to gab, all the while ignoring the fact that there are other people around. Then, if they bump into you, they act surprised and usually uspet with the other guy for not getting out of his way! I was at a hotel in Las Vegas several years ago, still on crutches from a recent foot surgery. Well, this lady in front of me is jabbering away at someone while actually doing a combination run, hop, skip thing backwards, all the while headed in my direction. Try as I might, I couldn't get out of her path because she kept swerving, and I wasn't as fast as her due to the crutches. I finally backed into a wall, but she kept on coming! I dodged her at the last moment, and she literally crashed into the wall (better the wall than me!). she then glared at me and proceeded to curse me out in French. Imagine her surprise when my father, who had spent some time in France during WWII, proceeded to curse her out in "soldier French" (surprised he remembered it as well as he did). She looked totally astonished and flounced off, this time looking where she was going. Well............ :rotfl2:

I've had similar situations happen all the time (but no cursing in French). It seems people just ignore the fact that there's other people in the world and continue conversations while walking backwards, then act startled and annoyed when the inevitable happens, they actually bump into someone. I mean, there's only so much you can do to get out of their way! Sometimes, depending on the situation, I just stand my ground, put out my hand, and when they bump into me say "watch where you're going". But ,of course, they act like it was my fault for being there. I have a BW (backwards walker), nearly run my dd down last week in the grocery store. DD didn't see her coming, she was looking at a display rack. A lady was walking backwards, gabbing at someone and facing that person, not where she was going. She was about to run right into dd! There was simply no time to warn dd to get out of the way, so I did the only thing I could--I shoved my cart in BW's path between her and dd. She ran right into it and was quite upset. I told her if she was watching where she was going she would have seen my cart (she didn't see me shove it in her path). Well, there again, I'm somehow at fault for not clearing a path for a BW. :lmao:

Well, just a little vent. Does anyone else feel the way I do? That BWs are a publice hazard? What are you supposed to do, watch out for someone who doesn't watch out for themselves, or just stand there and let them run you or your child over? Guess that would be the "polite" thing to do....... :confused3

We're going to WDW again in April. Hope we don't encounter any BW's! :scratchin

watch out for the flames  i heard the united-backwards-walkers-of-america are organizing a rally and frequent these boards. they're really going to let you have it! can't say anything these days without an organization coming after you lol :rotfl2:

You'll get no flames from me. It peeves me too. I ALWAYS try to be aware of my surrounding, WDW or not. I don't know why people feel like they have to walk backwards.

Thanks for the heads up on the United Backwards Walkers rally--wonder if they're having a convention at WDW? Well, I suppose if everyone is walking backwards, then they're all walking "correctly"? What happens if two backwards walkers bump into each other? Kind of like if you multiply two negative numbers, you get a positive? I never could understand that one either, just took the teacher's word for it. Now if I could just figure out the "backwards walker" concept!

Maybe it qualifies as a disability--unable to put brain in gear before putting a$$ in gear--oh, I can see it now! Think of all the kids in school with IEP's for the BW syndrome! Before the flame throwers start loading up their rocket launchers, let me state that I am disabled and have a son with dyslexia who has an IEP (individual learning plan). I'm not being insensitive, just my style of humor!

Too funny!

My 8yo DS has acquired this habit lately so I think I will show him this post.

Thanks!

I don't doubt your story; however, I can't say I've ever seen the backwards walkers. :confused3 I guess I'm still trying to get over the 5-abreast-and-shuffling mall walkers.

The who? :confused3

Actually, you really have to watch out for the five-abreast-and-shuffling-mall- walkers who also walk backwards, while talking on a cell phone! :rotfl2:

I think the "five-abreast_and-shuffling-mall-walkers were at one time extras who played in "Night of the Living Dead" , except the cell phones are a recent addition to their wardrobe!

Let's not forget the - I will stop where when and how I want and change direction with no concept of the other people around me walkers.

The mall shufflers drive me BATTY!!!

My father and I were walking through a hospital the other night. He has a bad habit of getting closer and closer and closer :crowded: until he's pushing you into a wall. I finally had to yell at him to stop walking ON TOP OF ME!!! :scared: What organiation should I refer him to?

Erin :)

Now backwards walkers are one thing, but let me take up for the "mall shufflers". Actually, all joking aside, I'm disabled and walk slow. Used to be people just thought I was "shuffling" (I really don't look disabled, I look pretty healthy). I started using a cane, both to avoid being tripped and also as a visual cue to others that I'm really not "shuffling" I can't walk any faster. It does help in crowds, people cut me some slack, keep their kids out of my path, etc. I used to be too proud to use a cane, but now my reasoning is "....Pride goeth before a fall".

Still, I wouldn't use a cane and walk backwards! Now if I can just figure out when the United Backwards Walkers next rally is....maybe I'll do a Google search! :surfweb:

May I add the "I want to read my map but not give up any time to step over to the side and stop and do it", Nooo I will just keep walking with my head down and walk right into everyone. And I might just call someone on my cell phone at the same time so I can read them the map.

I'd like to add the "I want to take a photo right here right now" people, folks who think that folks using a walkway to walk should defer their vacation to people who don't care enough to find a good spot away from the flow of traffic to take their pictures.

I agree about the people using walkways to take photos. I used to try to be polite and wait for them to snap their pictures, but then realized it was taking so much of my time waiting for someone to snap a picture on a public walkway. Now I just walk on through--their choice if they take pictures on a public walkway--they might get some of the public in their pictures. I can't just stand there al day being "polite", and what's "polite" about blocking a public walkway to sanp a picture you could have taken in another, more convenient (for everyone) location?

My wife and I often joke that these types of "walkers" need tail lights and flashers to alert those around them. We've mostly experienced the stoppers. Have yet to encounter the backwards walker.

Why do I feel like I'm writing about some sort of African safari? :teeth:

Oh, you mean the ones that want a people-free space of 20 feet between themselves and the person they're photographing? I used to be polite too but not anymore........I suspect I've ruined quite a few pics. So many people have started to do this type of photography..... I ended up looking out for them so I wouldn't be "rude" and missing the interesting sights of my surroundings. I don't intentionally walk into their picture but........

I've learned not to expect people to act the way I would like them to, but instead accept that they will do as they please. I'm fairly certain that on occasion I've managed to do something at the mall or a theme park that's caused frustration to someone else, so it all evens out in the big scheme of things. I try to ignore or laugh off these little annoyances rather than have it impact my blood pressure or spoil one moment of fun for me. Everyone has been an obliviot at one time or another.

Well I've never had problems with the "backward walkers" but I can't stand the people who take a step off the escalator and then stop. Hello? It's not like we're on steps and can stop while we wait for you decide where to go.

I have to agree with the backwards walkers, map readers, and photo takers.

If the picture taker is honostly taking a quick picture then I'll politely wait. If they are taking a lifetime and a half to take the picture in the middle of the crowded walkway, then I'm not waiting around. I suspect I've ruined a few pictures but oh well. Most of my pictures have strangers in them.

The map readers are the worst. Enough said. They are my pet peeve.

Now this happened to me the other day. In a parking lot me and DBF were walking to his car. When we got to his car he was unlocking my door and we heard a lot of horn honking. Some woman backing out of a parking spot with NO ONE (not one car, not one person) around starts honking her horn. I have no idea what she was doing. I think she was immitating one of those backup sirens.

:lmao: :rotfl2: I 've seen those backward walkers and ITA. I try to get out of their way, but I've seen them bump into others at the parks, and it's like "why weren't you watching where I was going?" :rotfl:
