Big changes to the bars at Disney resorts

My FH and I took a couple friends from out of town out last week to Victoria Falls one night, and the Tambu Lounge to show them two of our favorite places.

However, when we arrived at each one, we found that the drink and appetizer menus had just been changed the previous day to something even more homogenized than before. They've nearly done away with all specialty cocktails from the various resort bars, park bars, etc, and have gone to a pretty much standardized menu. No more Yellow Tang at the Tambu Lounge, no more Mt Kilamaritas at Victoria Falls.

The server at the Tambu Lounge was telling us that she'd heard nothing but complaints non-stop for the previous two days since they had changed the menu. The drink quality is "eh" and they're now using Monin brand flavored syrups to give different flavors to the beverages instead of using real ingredients.

We were pretty disappointed when they changed the food menus before, but at least they kept some specialty drinks at each lounge. Now that it's all standardized and bland, I don't know that we can see ourselves going back at all to any of the lounges.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. :guilty:

Ugh..they have been taking the good stuff out of the bars for over a year now..sorry to hear they are taking it this far.

That's a shame about the homogenization of the drinks. I'm sure they are cutting corners which businesses often do. Unfortunately the savings won't be passed on to the guests. :sad2:

That's really sad. I generally don't like buying drinks because of the markup on alcohol but made an exception on some of the specialty drinks. So, more money in my pocket, less in Disney's. I'll make cocktails in the room at night with my own supplies.

I noticed this also this past summer at the BelleVue Lounge and Martha's Vineyard... same exact generic menu. I mean, not only were the offerings the same, but it was the exact same printed menu. :sad2:

To make matters worse, they no longer offered a wine flight at Martha's Vineyard. Said they discountinued that about a year ago. :rolleyes2

Yep :( They started it about a year ago to have the same printed menus, but it was just a week ago Sunday that they took it even further.

Bah. Disney used to get a lot of money out of us through the lounges.

A manager at Boatwright's told us (first part of this month) that DW was 'standardizing' their menus between the different restaurants. Guess they are doing so at the lounges also. :sad2:

I am glad we drive and have a car so that we can go off site.

Eating different things is a big part of vacation for us. popcorn::

Slightly Goofy

That will take the "pixie dust" out of the liquor.

Maybe no-one ordered these drinks???

I love to get the specialty drinks! Please tell me they still have the Backscratcher at Tambu!

Yup, encountered this standardized drinks and appetizer list at Outer Rim Lounge at Contemporary and POR's lounge.

*weeping softly*

This is very sad news to me.

I am with Elfstar...I shall be mixing up cocktails in my room!

You know, by standardizing everything, your getting the same experience no matter where you stay or eat, so whats the incentive to try new places, upgrade your resort or stay longer?

It will be no frills dining and no frills drinking....I can only imagine that if you ask Disney why the changes, they will see it is what the public wants......they are targetting those who want the no frills type of dining and drinking. It is like the airlines, remember getting meals, movies and lots of attention, now you are lucky if they give you a bag of peanuts...I wrote letters and was told that people in my area want to keep the costs down and prefer no frills....Personally, I hate to fly and all those things were a distraction for me..

I guess people will be having their drinks at the Swan and Dolphin as well. Hopefully, they are still offering those speciality drinks..

This really is disappointing and surprising. Why the belt tightening, isn't Disney doing great? You can't find a time where attendence is really low anymore. I can see the need to trim costs related to food with the DDP but not sure why they couldn't leave the bars alone. Not that I even use them much but I do like the idea of trying something new from a menu that varys from resort to resort. If its standard, I can just skip it. There is really less and less of a reason to renew DDE and have OOP meals. Either go all in and stay onsite with DDP or stay offsite and dine there too.

Sad news. My husband bought me a Mai Tai at the GF in September as we were supposed to be staying at the Polynesian and it is one of our traditions there. It was horrible....I would never have even been able to identify it as a Mai Tai! But I suppose if they don't have the proper ingredients..... Sad change.

However a couple trips back a bartender at Tambu told me that even though the pizza was no longer on the menu, we could still order it.

More terrible news on the Disney Dining front!

Yes, but this is one that can't be blamed on the DDP though! :lmao:

NOT THE BOOZE!!!!! Cmon Disney. :confused3 I'm not much of a letter writer but I'm definitely going to write about this. We leave in 10 days for an adult only trip. Specialty drinks were going to be a fair part of the entertainment. Their drinks always come with a hefty price tag but until now it hasn't bothered me because the ingredients were fresh, the alcohol of good quality and the end product interesting. I will however refuse to pay those prices for generic, low quality drinks.(Well, my brother or husband are usually buying my drinks but I refuse to spend their money this way :rotfl: ) Maybe they don't understand that the good strong drinks made me forget that a bottle of water costs that price.

This really surprises me. For close to $10 per drink they have to be making a killing. I am really surprised they's cut out the specialty drinks that make each lounge area unique. Oh well. I like diet coke, I really do, just not so much poolside....

Well, I guess everyone wil be making a booze stop from the airport to their hotel (if they have a car or maybe getting a taxi if they don't).
Hmmmm...I wonder what those itty-bitty resort refrigerators will be filling up with :drinking1 ?
("agnes!" goes off to find the Guest Communications addresses, both the snail mail one and the e-mail one. Anybody have them handy?)

agnes!
