Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered - A Sep/Oct trip report

Sounds like you had a little pixie-dust helping you along before you even got there. Can't wait to read more...

Yay you're here! :woohoo:

It was great to bump into you in the food court, can't wait to read about your trip too!

It was great to see you :) I wish we could have sat down and spent more time chatting, but we had left the kids back at the room for a 'quick run to the food court' and wanted to get back and get them settled into bed. I loved your accent, but will admit that I had to listen sharply to catch what you were saying!!

Glad to hear that you had a good flight, even though a long one. Can't wait to hear more about your trip.

I'm hoping to get a trip report started myself, things have just been so crazy here with the kids hockey/skating starting up. Seems I've gone from the nice Florida weather to sitting in a rink!! Quite an adjustment!

What did you think about being in that building?? We have royal rooms reserved for May - and they are in Oak and Parterre -- but it looks like they are pretty far from the bus - what did you think?? It looks like it's close to a bridge to walk over to the food court - maybe we'd go to the main bus stop. Anyway...just wondering what you thought of the distance between your room and the bus/pool/food court. Thanks!

All the mansion buildings are gorgeous. Riverside is huge so it sometimes seems like everything is such a long walk :rotfl: Oak Manor is just a few minutes from the food court, just along the path and over the bridge and you're there. Same with the main bus depot, but the east depot is also just behind the building and is actually closer, though we tended to use the main depot.

Oak also has a quiet pool so though we used this more than the main pool - it was just at the end of our hallway!

Rather predictably considering jet lag and a massive overdose of excitement, on our first full day at WDW I was awake at 5am.

We grabbed some breakfast at the Riverside Mill. Take note of that sentence, you will see it a lot. I had a cherry danish and my usual two mugs of Coke (yes I have a very nutritional diet) and Ross started his vacation with a chocolate croissant and a cappuccino, before it was on to the Walt Disney World transportation system (you can hear that voice now can’t you?) and on our way to the Magic Kingdom.

We arrived in plenty of time for the rope drop ceremony and, learning from previous years’ experience, we hovered near the back by the gates so we would have a better view of the ceremony itself. While we waited we chatted to a lovely CM named Alicia who gave us some Mickey stickers – I’m easily amused – and to a couple standing near us. I took a few pics while we waited.

WDW2011018.jpg

It almost brought a tear to my eye hearing that familiar rope drop music fill the Magic Kingdom. For some reason there was no character train to bring the characters, they all just emerged from the other side of the station along with the Family of the Day. I managed to make use of the zoom on my camera to snap a few photos while we sang along.

Once we were through the initial mad dash to get inside, it was down to our first point of business – we had a date with the Pirates of the Caribbean. We were both determined to go at a reasonable pace and make sure we were stopping to take everything in, so we were surprised to find POTC still roped off when we arrived. The ride was having technical difficulties and hadn’t opened yet! We were preparing to head round to Frontierland when the CMs called us back to say the ride was open, so we dashed inside and ended up being the first to ride that day!

After Pirates we headed off to the wildest ride in the wilderness and happily found Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in my favourite condition – walk on! Neither of us ever seem to tire of this ride. It’s one of Ross’ favourites and I just love everything about it from the queue to the music and even the smell of the tracks. We rode this twice before taking some more photos and just generally being silly then, after deciding it was still too early for a Splash Mountain soaking, wandered around to the Haunted Mansion.

We paid our respects Master Gracey and the other happy haunts (skipping the new queue on this occasion) and wandered around the stores for a while – far be it for me to skip a potential merchandising experience! Fantasyland was calling and it was soon time for the obligatory ride. Yip, you’ve guessed it…

WDW2011036.jpg

It's a small world after all.

Had to be done. It’s Disney law.

It was odd seeing the walls where Toon Town used to me. The new Fantasyland expansion looked well underway, and I snapped a few pictures of Beast’s castle coming together.

WDW2011064.jpg

While wandering around the castle we spotted the winding queues of people waiting to see Rapunzel and even managed to catch a glimpse of the young lady herself (camera zoom saves the day again!)

WDW2011037.jpg

One of the big surprises of the day happened in Fantasyland when I found that Snow White’s Scary Adventures was still open! I was so happy to get to ride this again as I was sure I had heard it would be closed when we arrived.

After Snow White we caught Philarmagic (a huge favourite of mine – hands up, who tries to catch Tinkerbell?) before we stopped at one of our favourite places for lunch – Pinnochio’s Village House.

WDW2011044.jpg

Completely defeated by what seemed like an enormous lunch, it was onto Tomorrowland and Stitch’s Great Escape. In spite of my screen name this is not a huge favourite of mine though I try to do it at least once each trip. It’s something about the noise in the dark that makes me uncomfortable. We also rode Buzz Lightyear (where I continued my tradition of claiming my laser blaster, and mine alone, is broken), and then it was time for something completely different…

Readers of my PTR might recall that on each of our previous trips Space Mountain has been closed, so this trip was our first chance to experience this. Now I love rollercoasters, but I can’t help feeling nervous about a new one, especially when I can’t see it before hand. This too was near enough walk on and we were soon locked and loaded into our space shuttles and ready for take off…

Coming up…

Did the trip around Space Mountain have a happy ending? Did Tony’s Town Square Restaurant live up (or down) to its reputation? Could the Main Street Electrical Parade compete with the mighty Spectromagic? Will I ever figure out the perfect size for trip report photos?!

Also in the next instalment…Wishes, the Magic, Memories and You show, and “was than a rain drop I felt?”

A cherry danish and Coke... sounds like my kind of breakfast! :thumbsup2

First to ride POTC, walk on BTMR... you were the perfect example of why it's so important to get to the parks early!

Curious to see how you liked Space Mtn and Tony's...

Haha you made me laugh with Disney World Transportation System sentence as I can for sure hear that voice right about now!

We had the same experience at MK opening - no train either.

Sounds like you guys had a very productive day. We were also pleased to ride Snow White before it closes and felt exactly the same way about Space Mountain.

Looking forward to the next update :goodvibes

We always seem to head to Tomorrowland first. I am thinking that next time we need to head over to BTMR first. And how cool to be the first of the day to ride Pirates!

Reading your trip report makes me want to get started on mine! Although since you were there a few days before me, it's only right if your trip report is a few days ahead of mine ;)
Can't wait to hear what you thought of Space Mountain, I don't have an opinion as I chickened out and didn't ride it:rolleyes1

Apologies for the delays between updates – since we’ve come home we’ve been having huge issues with our internet connection, it’s a total pain!

I left our last update with us strapped into our space shuttle ready for our first race around Space Mountain. And the verdict? I loved it! Ross did too. I was blown away by how rough this ride is (note to self – don’t jam your bag – complete with a solid tube of handy wipes – in the seat beside you. I’m still nursing sore ribs!)

It was nearing parade time so we grabbed some drinks and staked out a spot on Main Street. The heat had been barely bearable until this point so I was grateful for a little cloud cover, right up until I felt the first rain drop! Main Street was suddenly awash with ponchos, but thankfully it was only a shower and the parade went ahead as normal.

WDW2011099.jpg
WDW2011092.jpg

After the parade we wandered back to Adventureland, purposefully slowing our pace so we’d still have enough energy to evening EMH. We went on Pirates again and took a trip on the Jungle Cruise, and we managed to squeeze in another ride on BTMRR before heading back to Main Street for the most important thing on the agenda for that day – the Main Street Flag Retreat.

WDW2011123.jpg

I had read about this online and was determined to see it. It’s a lovely event to watch, and I enjoyed taking a few minutes out of the manic park touring to stop and watch this relatively quiet ceremony with the Dapper Dans and members of the Magic Kingdom security. If anyone hasn’t seen this, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to catch it.

Dinner that evening was at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. Having read mixed reviews, I was curious to see how this meal would go. We were seated quickly and my first observation was that the tables are incredibly close together, so much so that we had difficulty actually getting to our table. Once seated, we both ordered spaghetti and meatballs.

WDW2011132.jpg

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this meal. The food was actually very good, and the desserts were among our favourites of the trip (ice cream bomb and vanilla gelato). Though it paled in comparison to some of our other dining experiences, I would definitely eat here again.

What better way to let a huge meal settle? Yip, Space Mountain. This was my bright idea. By the time we walked round to Tomorrowland, the wait time was 30 minutes, so I thought “that’s fine, our food will have settled by the time we ride.” Well, not for the only time during our trip, we found that the wait time was not 100% accurate. As we walked through the queue and didn’t meet other people until just before the loading bay, I realised nervously that this was not a 30 minute line (more like 10-15). I had to assure a very nervous Ross that to this day I have never actually thrown up on a ride!

Coming right up – MSEP, Magic, Memories and You, Wishes and “where did all the people come from?”

Two big firsts for us on this trip were the Main Street Electrical Parade and the Magic, Memories and You show before Wishes.

After spending more time than anticipated squeezing ‘one more ride’ on this, that and the next thing, we finally made our way to Main Street still with plenty of time before the parade. Or so we thought. In what would continue to be a theme throughout our trip, we found that the secret of securing a spot well in advance is apparently out. More people than ever were already lined up on Main Street waiting for the parade. We could still have secured a spot easily enough, but the bigger concern for me was that some spaces along the railings at the Crystal Palace were already taken – my preferred spot for Wishes! We made the snap decision to sacrifice a prime view of the parade for a flawless view of the fireworks, and were happily camped out on the ground in front of the Crystal Palace, where I enjoyed a very welcome sit down by the railings (by this time my feet were more than a little bit sore!)

This is usually one of my favourite parts of the parks – sitting comfortably on the ground (where else would you happily sit on the pavement but at WDW?) watching all the people walking by. The only thing missing was my hotdog from Casey’s, but since I was still carrying what felt like a meatball baby from Tony’s I figured I should skip the hotdog this time!

Soon the lights were dimmed and the music started for the parade. Prepare yourselves everyone, I am about to write something that is apparently rather controversial. I prefer Spectromagic. I’m sorry, but the Electrical Parade is just not the same. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia attached to the first parade you see, but I missed the Spectro soundtrack, though I did enjoy seeing Elliot from Pete’s Dragon. The night time parades are not huge favourites with me to begin with so it wasn’t a major issue.

After the parade, we sat back down to wait for the castle show and Wishes. It was here we had our first glimpse of the uglier side of a trip to WDW. A large family group, including at least one child in a stroller, had taken the spot beside us, and everyone was quite happy and ready to enjoy a perfect view of the shows – until another family arrived moments before the show. They were ‘those’ people – you know the ones, the people who show up moments before a show or parade and try to squeeze in to a space that can’t possibly accommodate them. ‘Nice try’, I was thinking, ‘but I’ve been here before.’ I was so close to the railings I was practically part of the scenery, but the other family were not so lucky. The mother of the second family was persistent, pushing her two sons further and further forward until they were completely blocking the view of the child in the stroller. No longer able to see, the first family eventually gave up and went off in search of somewhere else to stand, leaving me fuming on their behalf. I felt so bad for them, they had been waiting there for at least 30 minutes. We couldn’t even offer them our spot, since the rest of the family had moved in so close that Ross was forced to stand behind me to keep them from moving any closer to me.

This is the one aspect of a trip to WDW I never look forward to. I just can’t understand why people need to be so selfish. 99% of the time everyone works together and makes sure everyone can see but there’s always that one person or group that thinks they’re more important than anyone else. (This was not the only time we saw this sort of behaviour during our trip.)

We tried our best to ignore our new neighbours as the Magic, Memories and You show got under way. I loved, loved, loved this. This was one of a number of genuinely jaw dropping moments throughout this trip. I’d had no idea what to expect of this and couldn’t believe the way they made the castle come to life. Unfortunately I have no pictures as I was too busy watching the show! And of course I was a complete emotional wreck by the end of it, especially when the castle transformed into Walt’s image and his voice filled the Magic Kingdom.

There were yet more tears from me as we watched Wishes with a blissfully unobstructed view. (This was a big thing for me this year following our experiences in previous years having camped out for a spot more than an hour in advance to invariably end up with a 6ft person with a kid on their shoulders standing in front of me!) After the fireworks we waited for the exit stampede to subside and then it was back to the rides for EMH.

It was still pretty busy, and crowds seemed to have appeared from nowhere! For the only time that day, we were actually lining up for Pirates – every other time had been walk on. As we stood in line, I could tell Ross was getting tired, and I was hiding yawns by this time too. We managed another couple of rides on Pirates, rode BTMRR and Haunted Mansion. We finally managed to go through the new queue a HM and had fun playing with all the interactive parts, but on the ride itself I realised it was time to call it a day. By this time it was approaching midnight (we’d arrived at the park before 9 that morning), and half way round the mansion I couldn’t tell if I was asleep or awake! Time to go home (via the Emporium, naturally!)

And so ended our first full day at Walt Disney World.

Coming up: breakfast with old friends, how to feel underdressed at Disney World and “I don’t like the look of that sky…”

I'm glad to hear you both enjoyed Space Mountain! :cool1:

Lovely parade pics and I have never seen/heard of the Main Street Flag retreat - will have to check it out.

I'm glad to see another positive review of Tony's Town Square - like you have not seen many of them.

Glad to hear you liked Space Mtn... even though I don't, LOL! Like you mentioned, it's just too bumpy/jerky for me.

And good to hear you liked your meal at Tony's. I'd agree with your assessment, that it pales in comparison to other restaurants. I thought Tony's was just ok and probably wouldn't go back... there are just so many other awesome places to choose!

Loving your report so far!:thumbsup2
Sounds like a great, and long, first day:)
We ate at Tony's on our first trip, but while we thought it was okay, it just wasn't a place we wanted to go this time as there were too many other places we preferred to try.
Can't wait to hear more about your trip.

Yay, I have internet at last! Apologies for the delays between updates but thankfully the nice man from the telephone company has now fixed our connection. Unfortunately I'm still having problems with Photobucket so will have a couple of pic free posts!

We had arrived back at our room well after midnight after our long tour around the Magic Kingdom, but there was no time for lounging around the next morning since we had to make it from POR to the Polynesian in plenty of time for our breakfast ADR at Ohana. We took the bus to the Magic Kingdom, hopped on the monorail and checked in at the Ohana desk.

This was our second breakfast at Ohana and we enjoyed it as much as before. We had a lot of fun with the characters and as usual I could barely eat until all the characters had come round and said hello.

We had planned today as our “Monorail Tour” as we wanted to have a look around at least a few of the resorts on the monorail line. We spent some time wandering around the Polynesian and then took the monorail to the Grand Floridian.

This resort is absolutely gorgeous. Everything inside was so beautiful, but we both immediately agreed it would be far too fancy for our tastes. Walking around in just a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, I felt completely underdressed for a place like this! Combined with the fact that the heat outside was already turning me into a sticky mess I was afraid to touch anything at all :rotfl:

We decided to pop back into the Magic Kingdom for a while to catch some of the things we missed the day before. It was a much less regimented routine for today so I can’t really recall what order we did anything in. We more or less just wandered around, jumping into any line that looked reasonably short. We rode the Magic Carpets, Pirates, BTMRR, and Space Mountain, got soaked a couple of times on Splash Mountain (which broke down both times, making the wait just a little bit longer), and did Stitch again. We also stopped for one of my first Disboards Must-Do’s – a Dole Whip Float! (Excellent use of a snack credit.) Sadly Ross accidentally deleted my only picture of this. It wasn’t my favourite treat of the trip since it was too sweet for me and I’m not overly fond of pineapple – this was one of those things I wanted to try.

On our previous trips we had only ever seen the Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management so this would be our first time seeing the original version with no Zazu or Iago. I hated it! I know there are a lot of people who like the nostalgic charm of the original, but I just found it so boring (not that the other version was super exciting, but at least the familiar characters broke it up a bit!) I was also vaguely irritated throughout the show by a couple of people who insisted on using their phones during the darker sections – one woman was texting from the moment she sat down till the moment it was over, lighting up the whole section. Is this the new version of flash photography?

We left Magic Kingdom around lunch time and headed back to the resort, where we grabbed some lunch from the Riverside Mill and I had the second of my must-try treats – a Mickey rice krispie treat. Even though it was only our second full day, I was already struggling with the amount of food and only managed to eat half of my rice krispie treat and had to wrap it up for later.

After lunch we spent some time at the quiet pool next to our building. I can’t believe this is the first year we’ve used the pool while we’ve been at WDW – I couldn’t believe how much better I felt after a swim and a rest. Right on cue though, raindrops started tapping down so we quickly dressed and headed to the food court to grab some drinks. Just as we were about to step outside, the heavens opened. I’ve never seen rain come down so hard! It may not sound like it but this was one of my favourite moments of the trip. We filled our mugs, wrapped our now-dry towels around us and sat on the covered porch of the main building watching the rain. I would have been happy sitting there all day. Thunder and lightning were getting worse though and we knew we’d have to try to get back over the bridge and into our room so we made a run for it, completely soaked by the time we were back in the room!

The rain gave us a couple of hours to rest and shower before it slowed enough for us to brave Downtown Disney. The lightning was still fairly frequent so we didn’t even attempt the boats and went straight to the bus stop, which was pretty handy since it drops us right behind our destination – Wolfgang Puck Express.

I was looking forward to this meal as we’d eaten here one night on our last trip and we both loved it. I also think it’s amazing value since it’s included in the QSDP. We both ordered macaroni cheese which was just ok this time.

After dinner we wandered around the stores for a while, but two full days of walking were beginning to take their toll. I would not be defeated until I’d been to the World of Disney (and taking a lot of silly photographs) but we eventually turned back and headed for the buses, knowing I would be asleep before we even left the bus stop!

I have a secret. You can’t tell anyone. Epcot is my favourite park.

I always feel like I’m supposed to say it’s Magic Kingdom, which probably just pushes all others aside on account of it being…well, the Magic Kingdom. But oh how I love Epcot. How much? I even love Living with the Land. That’s how much.

I have another secret. You definitely can’t tell anyone this one. I don’t like the Food and Wine Festival. It’s just not my thing, and there’s something about all the different aromas hitting me at once in 90 degree heat that makes me faintly queasy. Still, though, I love Epcot.

I’m somewhat ashamed of this, but we did not make it to the park for 8am for the start of morning EMH. I woke up determined to squeeze every possible moment out of today after being defeated by sore feet and an old back injury the day before, but although we were up in plenty of time I just couldn’t seem to get moving fast enough. Ok, so we arrived at 8.15, but I’m convinced it cost me a double ride on Soarin!

As this was our third time through bag check at the parks, I was beginning to notice a trend – long lines and slow progress. I can’t even guess at why this seemed to be the case, but it was a trend that continued – and worsened – throughout the trip. The parks didn’t seem to be overly crowded but it just seemed that we were waiting much longer to get through bag check than we had on any other trip.

Soarin’, of course, was first on our agenda, and it was still more or less walk on at this point (the only time we saw it like this!) Soarin’ and I have had a rocky relationship, from a disappointing first meeting on our first trip (when I was underwhelmed after all the hype) to our full blow love affair of our second trip. How would we fare this year? After my first ride this trip, all seemed well…

After Soarin’ we headed across to Test Track for the first of so many rides that I have actually lost cost. Somewhere among the number we became that couple and started a series of comedy poses for the camera, knowing we could collect them on our Photopass. (The CD has just arrived so I'll be able to do a photo post soon)

For those of you who have followed over from my PTR, you may recall that I have an issue with a certain ride in Future World, and it was time to put that issue behind me…it was time for Mission Space. (Green Team, though, not Orange. I was keen to point this out several times to the CM at the gate.) Another couple made up the other half of our team and my anxiety was apparently plastered all over my face since the very nice lady tried to reassure me before our capsule opened.

Well, how silly do I feel? I loved this ride. In fact we both did. We didn’t love it enough to attempt the Orange side (and even that was because Ross wouldn’t go on it with me – I would have at least given it a try.) We ended up riding this multiple times throughout the trip.

After another ride on Test Track, we only had a few minutes to make it over to World Showcase for our first Dismeet of the trip as I’d arranged to meet Tanz in Italy. This is the first time I’ve actually been round at World Showcase before the ropes come down and when I saw everyone lining up like they were entering I race I was slightly worried we would get trampled. Heat was also becoming an issue for the first time. It wasn’t even eleven yet and I was already a wet, sticky mess. Once the ropes dropped we hurried round to Italy and had a lovely catch up with Tanz before heading in for our ADR at Via Napoli.

What can I say about this restaurant? The pizza was perfect, our server was very charming (and, like every other server I saw, very handsome – ladies, I highly recommend an ADR here!), and the atmosphere and décor inside were both amazing. We opted for traditional margherita pizza, which was huge, but was so good there was no chance I was leaving any of it uneaten!

Coming up next - World Showcase and the Great Battle for Beast...

Wow, I might be approaching the record for longest time take to tell a story...ever!

So, when I left off we were around lunch time on our first full day at Epcot, and so far we were having an amazing time. One of our many pre-trip resolutions this year was to experience a lot more of World Showcase and we definitely did that. A lot of the afternoon was spent just wandering around looking at all the different architecture in the pavilions, exploring all the little hidden alleys and alcoves and trying to take in as much of the detail as possible. This is one of things I love most about Epcot as it's impossible to take in all the detail - you could look at the same country pavilion a hundred times and still see something new each time.

We spent a lot of time in the Morocco pavilion, saw the American Adventure (which is still a huge favourite of mine) and saw the lady making candy models in Japan, spotting characters like Aladdin and Jasmine, Snow White and Marie. We walked all the way around the lagoon and back to Future World with one goal - Club Cool.

We'll skip right by my epic geek-dom and total excitement at seeing so many Coke products in one place (I'm something of a fan) and move on to the Beverly. Call me naive, but I actually didn't expect this to be as bad as everyone says it is. Sadly Ross accidentally deleted my reaction to this from the camcorder but it was apparently hysterically funny. I wasn't laughing at the time though!

After sampling some of the Coke products and drooling over the merchandise, we raced back to World Showcase as I was desperate to get photos with Marie and Belle and Beast.

We were first in line with Marie so got a quick photo and autograph and then raced around to the line for Belle and Beast, where we were luckily the last people in the line before it closed (it was Beast's last appearance for the day). Lucky for us, but not so much for the half a dozen people who came along behind us, or for the poor CM who had to deal with them!

Honestly, I have read so many stories on the boards about this kind of behaviour but this was our first time seeing it ourselves. One woman would just not take no for an answer, and though she wasn't shouting or screaming, she was pretty aggressive and made it a very uncomfortable twenty minutes or so for the CM (and everyone else in the queue!) She ranted on and on about how her child was so desperate to see Beast that it was simply ruin her whole trip if she wasn't allowed to see him and really made a scene over nothing. I could understand her frustration but the times were well displayed and she really wanted to do nothing more than blame the poor CM for her being late to the line (the CM did an amazing job of keeping her cool.) To be honest, we were seconds away from stepping out of the line and letting her have our spots until she start harassing the CM - at that point any sympathy I had for her ended and I wasn't about to let her bully her way in. It was just such a shame to see someone behave that way and stress herself out like that.

That being said, this was a mere side show to the main event - seeing Belle and Beast! As I pointed out to Ross approximately 182 times that evening, this was a genuinely exciting moment, so no prizes for guessing what the picture of the day is...

WDW2011352.jpg

After the excitement of meeting my heroes, I needed a rest, so we headed to Japan for our ADR at Teppan Edo. What can I say about this meal? It was AMAZING! We have almost no pictures as I was too busy watching the chef make our meal. I had steak and chicken, and throughout the meal we chatted to a lovely family from Australia who turned out to be staying in the French Quarter. We both loved this meal, I would count this as one of my favourites of the entire trip, and I was definitely return here again.

After dinner, I managed to achieve another of my pre-trip resolutions - a Fiesta Margarita :dance3: :lmao: I grabbed one from the booth at Mexico and since we'd decided to skip Illuminations for yet another ride on Test Track I drank it while we wandered away from the crowds and back towards Future World. Definitely a highlight of the trip - though maybe not the best idea right before Test Track :rotfl:

We managed a couple of rides using the Single Rider line before heading out of the park seconds before the rest of the crowds.

Coming up - park hopping and the road to Le Cellier

Lol Epcot is my favourite park as well! Yay on loving Mission Space - I enjoyed it as well though I wasn't expecting to...

I was very happy to get to meet you before leaving Disney behind and can vouch for it being very hot on that day.

I'm glad you managed to spend a lot of time at the WS countries - there sure is a lot to take in. :lmao: at your experience of drinking Beverly...would've loved to have seen that!!

I'm sad to read about the way that woman was behaving towards the B&TB CM...like you said it wasn't their fault. We loved meeting B&TB during our trip.

Yay on enjoying your Fiesta Margarita! :woohoo:
