I have heard that you can have more than one credit card attached to your room. Disney will create different folios for the KKTW cards and attach the charges to the associated credit card.I find this interesting since every Disney resort we have stayed at has had the same response that they can only have 1 credit card on file per room.
I also still find what you did/tried to do quite shady. A regular hotel has no problem changing the method of payment at checkout because it has not had that payment for 45 days or more like Disney has. Again, if it were a room only at Disney it would be a whole different thing but for it to be a refund on a package that has to be paid for 45 days in advance is fishy. Just my opinion.
However, I have never heard of a Disney resort manager refunding money on a package and then charging the balance to a rewards card or numerous gift cards. I never knew that they could do that. TBH, I'm still skeptical that it can be done routinely. Room-only reservations are an entirely different story, given that the charges originate from the resort.
My feelings are that what the OP did is more the exception than it is the rule.
