Beware of Crocs in the Rain

:worried: Oh No! I just got a pair for my toddler to use when playing in the water areas! Is this a bad idea? :confused3 Was about to go and get my almost 4 year old a pair for the same thing. (I don't like sandles for kids, so they don't have anything else - just gym shoes with socks!) Any ideas?
for the past 2 years i've had a pair of Red Disney Crocs
IMG_0020-1.jpg

i wore these at BB and 4 times last year at Kings Island with their water park. and this was also included a cold 4 days at Cedar Point. and then wore then at WDW for 9 days in Oct. i never had any problem with grip. i got Crocs for i thing. water shoes that get wet and still work as shoes so your feet dont hurt. you know how that felt like the first time we went to WDW. didnt know a Thang!!!:scared1: 13-14 miles of HERE HERE HERE HERE and over here too in the middle of summer. now i have been still wearing those red crocs around the house. the tread is about flat. so yes that might make things a little slipery if you are running or moving fast in the rain or water parks. so i think it IS the shoes when the tread it LOW!! and YES they never slipped at 2 different water parks too. one park alone, 4 times!! so i think its BOTH problems and GOODIES of these crocs. it should be a choice you would want to make. take the good with the bad.
Ok now on with the shoe:rolleyes1 popcorn::

We were there during Fay and my 5 yr old DD was falling all over the place in her crocs.... after the 2nd day, we made her wear her sneakers even though she didn't want to because they obviously got soaked with all the rain.... at least she wasn't falling anymore! :rotfl:

I've been wearing Crocs for several years now. I don't have any trouble with them if they are new-ish, but once the tread is a little worn down they can be slippery on wet surfaces, especially painted wet surfaces (like the lines of a crosswalk). I actually bought a pair at Disney during Fay; I'd decided I couldn't wear crocs in the parks nonstop, so bought some Land's End water sneakers and some decent sandals, broke them in, and brought them and my sneakers with me. So much rain! Constantly wet feet, so I ended up with blisters everywhere. Buying crocs was the only thing that saved me!

I had a terrible time with my Payless Airwalks (cheap, offbrand Crocs) slipping in some spots at Epcot last year. It wasn't even raining, just a couple of spots of wet tiling. I'm bringing a new pair this year, but also some well-worn sandals as a backup.

Really have to disagree with your assesment Sunshine, the OP is right. I have crocs, and at no time in their life, brand new, slightly worn or whatever, have they been anything but awful in the rain. They are literally like standing on ice in running shoes if you wear them on cement that is wet, the smooth kind, like that is all over disney. 5 dollar flip flops are better. Its not difficult to see why, get that croc material wet, push hard against it and run your finger along it, there is so little friction. Try it with a running shoe, a lot more resistance, thats all there is to it. I know they say its slip resistant, compared to what? They are really bad in the rain, so its no wonder they didnt catch on as boat shoes. I know no one who sails that uses them for instance, and know quite a few who do sail. They caught on as casul footwear.

Good call OP, they arent good for the rain.

I am living proof of this. I really tore up my knee too while wearing them after it rained. :sad1:

Really? I've had the exact opposite experience. I wonder if it's the TYPE of croc. I was wearing Mary Janes when I slipped down. Maybe the tread isn't as good anyway? After my slip and fall, I never wear worn Crocs on wet surfaces. Most of my crocs are the original style that have a thicker bottom and better tread.

I've never worn Croc-offs (payless, Walmart versions) so I can't attest to their slippery qualities. I know they are WAY different in comfort levels. I take that back, I did buy one pair of Croc-offs when I was white water rafting. All of the river guides were wearing Crocs. They didn't last as long.

I don't think so. I have the Beach, Cayman, Metro, Aspens, and Athens styles and all became very slippery as soon as the tread started wearing. I love my Crocs and wear them daily to work, but am very careful with them if it's raining or if I must walk across wet floors. They are also very slippery on the ceramic tile in my entry way and in front of my fireplace. I have fallen and busted my butt too many times, while wearing them. Knowing it's supposed to be raining most of next week, I am not taking any to WDW. I'll be in my Teva Mush, Montrail Molokinis, and some new Adidas flip flops.

We were also just there during Fay and I slid a few times in brand new Mary Jane crocs after a sudden rain shower. I made sure to hold on to my DH if we were going down any kind of decline. During one of my little slips, I grabbed the handrail and part of my big toe's nail went into one of the little holes on the top and tore back. It was not a good feeling to say the least and I had to go to Mickey Star Traders and buy a $2 bandaid to hold it down. I made the boys wear their sneakers, even though they were soaking wet half the time. We dried them in the AKV dryer each night and they were good to go the next day.

I hope I didn't make people decide not to bring Crocs to WDW. They really are great shoes and as long as its not raining too much, wear them!

My whole reason for starting this thread is to warn people of the 'possibility' of slipping and sliding if you wear them in the rain. Mine were not worn out, actually relatively new & I had a tough time in them. The number of little kids wearing crocs that we saw slipping and falling was incredible. So I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

I love Crocs and in fact, Im wearing a pair today :)

I love my crocs too - have a couple of different styles - most comfy shoes ever for walking.

We were at Disney during Faye and I did have a 'slipping' incident.

We were at Hollywood Studios and I was hurrying down to get fastpasses for RnRC and on the way back it started to rain heavily. I was wearing the flip-flop style (Athens?) which were a year old and I slipped on the white lines down the middle of Sunset Boulevard - right heel went from under me and whole weight came down on left knee (still picking the scab off now).

It wouldn't deter me from wearing them again - just take a bit of extra care in the rain - but really they're the ideal shoes to wear in the rain - no problem drying them!!
