Better Enforcement of Rules

How many times have you seen people smoking out on the balcony and the door is wide open.I have seen it quite few times walking over to DTD.

;) Way to go Sammie, start a thread dealing with 2 DIS board no-no's; smoking and occupancy limits.

Nothing good on TV, thought I might watch some action here. :rotfl:

Besides we are all mature adults, I am sure we can be civilized, well almost all of us can.:rotfl2:

My home in NJ is kept cool year round, about 65-68. I don't sleep well in temps above 68 degrees. When I go "home" to DVC I want to be able to sleep well, so the thermostat is a BIG issue for me. I want to get a good nights sleep so I can enjoy the parks during the day!

I have never seen one that you could not keep at 68, at least we had no problems at SSR at 68, which I find very reasonable.

COME ON? You aren't going to let people smoke on there balconies. I'm not a smoker but... That would be pretty bad. I have been in a NS room that someone did smoke in and it was very annoying to smell for the first 3 or 4 days until we aired it out but, if someone wants to got outside and do that who are we to judge.

No its not bad. No smoking means no smoking. I do have to give you credit for being so tolerant. If I reserved and recieved a non smoking room that smelled like smoke there is no way I would put up with it for 3 or 4 days of my vacation.

Well, as long as we are at it.....

I'd like to see pool hopping restrictions enforced. Tyvek wristbands and show your room key at all pools, not just SAB.

I'd like Disney to enforce the "commercial renters clause" - and, of course, define it to MY standards. (Since my mind changes all the time on what exactly that is, I forsee many phone calls from DVC to me for my opinion on if this is, or is not, commercial renting).

I would like to see WDW go all non smoking. I was really upset one year at BWV when people were smoking at the main pool and I asked the lifeguard it it was allowed and she said it was. I was so surprised because I thought where is the most likely place you are going to find children except at a pool and they allow smoking. It did not make sense to me.

Essentially all of the Marriott's (and ALL of the Westin's) are going or have gone NS. With a couple of exceptions, they are including smoking on the balcony in the Ban. Actually the only one I am aware of that isn't announced it would be all NS and have back tracked somewhat. In the timeshare world the rules are all over the place but I'd guess that overall smoking on the balcony is permitted when not allowed in the units.

I'm thinking that cramming six people smoking cigars on the balcony of a NS studio (with the door open of course) at noon on check out day (after illegally pool hopping to SAB and bring back pool towels) could be a problem?

Perhaps the only thing making it worse is if they were renters using morphed points that had been transferred twice.

The Ritz Carlton in Boston is all non-smoking.

So everyone staying there gets to walk past the bunch of people on the side of the doors smoking.

That is what will happen when DVC goes non-smoking. People will be standing outside the entrances smoking. And it will be allowed, since the rule would most likely only cover indoors, like the ones here in NY.

Every bar and many restaurants in this area have to be entered by passing through a group of smokers.

Yes, I am a smoker. No, I do not and will not EVER smoke in a nonsmoking room. We do not even smoke in our own home or vehicle. I also would not stand outside the doors of the building, I would get away from there. Unfortunately, not all smokers have common courtesy like we do. I do not want to wheel my kids through a crowd of smokers, either. And I fear that making all DVC rooms N/S will result in that. :guilty:

Also, I agree.....allowing smoking near the pools is ridiculous. All those kids running around?? People in bare feet? Just an accident waiting to happen. I also could not believe they allow smoking near the Goofy pool on the cruise, but I digress.

But isn't there a rule somewhere against that......:confused3

Ahhh, found it, the NSStCIGSABT&TEbayComRenPtMorf rule. It's on page 841 of your POS. :thumbsup2

And they were drinking out of their POFQ mugs from 6 years ago. ;)

That's a good point Caskbill. Just what exactly are the rules and where does a member go to look up this list of DVC no-no's?

Judging from some of the responses so far, it would seem that some folks are making up rules that don't exist and insisting on their enforcement. Maybe DVC should consider mailing a "rules" insert with each confirmation just to remind us of proper DVC etiquette.

OT:

We were at the Mirage in Las Vegas recently where they have a dolphin habitat exhibit. As we were waiting in line to enter, the CM made an announcement that for the health & safety of the animals, smoking was not allowed past the point of entry. However, it was perfectly fine to smoke all you wanted in the queue area, small children and other air breathing creatures not-withstanding. Go figure!

The one difference with point morphing is that it is a problem entirely created and under the control of DVC. The most a member can do is take advantage of their system.

If you check-out late at a hotel, they will charge you an extra night!

Yes, and at some resorts there is a $200 fee if the room has been smoked in. That's exactly what I think they need to do.

Well, around here, there are also signs that prohibit smoking within 30 feet of an entrance. The smoking stations outside the MOA are 30 feet from any doorway. It helps a LOT!

There's probably a distinction between rules, which to me are requirements that should never be waived, and policy, which can be waived depending on circumstances.

That said, I do wish there were some policies that were followed more strictly.

Example: They will currently allow a 5th person in a 1-B/R, but policy is that they won't furnish bedding. But we see plenty of reports where people call and get extra bedding, whether it's for a 5th person or someone just wants extra pillows or something.
