Any recommendations for a good wireless printer that doesnt cost a fortune for ink refills? I have a Lexmark and it is crazy prices for the ink. Now it is telling me to refill the ink but the printer says it is 40% full! Ugh - I refuse to pay $40-50 for ink refills again.

What is your application? Are you printing a lot of pictures? Mostly text? A lot of color? Mostly black/white? Do you really even need color? About how many pages per month/week/year do you print?

Last year I decided to buy a Brother Laser printer instead of another inkjet...I love it...it does not print colour and will cost more when I finally have to buy more toner but it prints thousands more pages than the inkjet....I got it for 29.99 at Staples. It was around this time of the year so just keep an eye out for sales.

We have an Epson nx330 small-in-one. It works great. It has separate color cartridges, so you just buy what you need. The printer was on sale for about $60. Each ink cartridge is around $12.

I have a brother hl-2170. It's an all in one but only cost $60. The refills aren't too expensive and I like there is a separate cartridge for each color.

We just use it for personal use. Sometimes print pictures and color items on reports for sons school projects but we do not print our actual pictures that we keep. We primarily use it for sons school projects and print out misc stuff from internet.

I admit it, I'm a geek. We added a Brother WiFi laser unit to the kitchen several years ago. A similar unit is probably $50-75 today. The cost of the toner we use for a lot of our B&W printing makes it a bargain. The home office has a color inkjet that is photo quality. It is used from time to time to keep the jets from drying out, and any color printing.

The laser printer has paid for itself over time. If you can find the right deals, and have the space for two printers that solution may work for you.

Printers are cheap; ink is expensive so the manufacturer has a steady revenue stream.

Laser printers are cheaper to run.

What does that mean?

You can print wireless. Also you can receive email directly without using a computer.

Also something else to think about.

It has been several years since I bought a printer

There are basically 3 players

HP
Epson
Canon

Printheads is a big key here and if they go bad have to be replaced. this is how each handle it. Assuming nothing has changed.

HP Everytime you buy an ink cartridge you buy a printhead. It's built into the cartridge.

Epson and Canon do not have the printhead built into the cartridge

Epson you have to send the printer in to replace it

Canon you buy the printhead and replace it yourself. easy to do.

Laser printers are awesome, but we still use an old HP inkjet. We keep finding ink for it and it's cheaper than replacing it for the moment. My aunt has a lexmark, and it always says she needs to replace the ink when it's still half full. I also haven't been able to find a driver for it for windows 7.

Look at ebay as well for the Brother printers. The lifespan on a laser printer is significantly longer, so look at the page count if you purchase a used unit. Always make sure you buy a brand that keeps up with the product. HP is good about supporting old products, and even when HP stops, there's enough users to create new drivers. This printer was made for Windows 2000 and XP, and there's drivers for windows 8

I had a Dell printer made by Lexmark once. That darn thing sucked ink faster than Dracula. That was years ago.

I have an Epson NX430. Love it. I buy the cartridges through sites like 123inkjets, and do not get the manufacturer ones. We researched the reviews of printers to make SURE we got one that doesn't get glitchy when you use non-OEM cartridges (our last printer was an ancient HP, and towards the end of its life it got weird about those). They are much cheaper.

And with that printer you have 4 separate cartridges that are replaced as needed. I took the black cartridge down to almost nothing before I *had to* replace it, and right now it argues with me about the yellow, telling me that it's low and needs to be replaced, but it will still print if I'm patient. I like this MUCH better than the combo color cartridges that I had to replace for just one color, even if the other colors were still there.

Printheads aren't the key, unless you print a lot. It's cheaper to buy a new printer then it is to replace the printhead. By the time your Canon printheads need to be replaced it's time to replace the printer.

B&W lasers have low per page costs. Brother offers some great deals. Depending on what you print buying 2 printers might make sense.

I'm not sure if color laser will cost less per page to print then inkjet. Reviews I've read suggests not.
