Best way to use/pay for roaming

Getting on ship tomorrow for Western Carribbean. I'd like to use phone to check work email twice per day, text photos back to rub it in to the folks at home, and have phone use in case of emergency.

I have an iPhone with ATT. Any thoughts as the best and most economical way to do this?

If you sign up on embarkation day they give you a small data package you can use to check email etc. be careful not to download large files. It'll kill whatever data plan you have. They have a number of data packages. Whatsapp or iMessage would be a good way to text. Don't know about phone usage.

Att has a cruise talk plan as well as international roaming plans you can add while on islands. I do not think it includes Castaway Cay. The cruise package is pretty expensive the international roaming plans can be depending on usage. Are you required to check your work email or just doing it to stay up to speed? If your company is requiring it, I'd ask them if they are willing to pony up for short-term international coverage.
