Best way to have someone Transfer Points

I am hoping in the next few days to purchase some points for a transfer into our DVC account. I have been looking around for a while to see what is the best way to do this withour being frauded. Can anyone offer some advice? It would seem to me the best way would be to do the three way call to Member Services, have the points transfer (because at least that person would know my account info at that point), then get them the money. If I were to send the money first they could just never call. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks...

And if the transfer happens before the money is sent, you could just not send the money and the owner would be the one defrauded. There is inherent risk in point transfers. The 2 parties need to come to some agreement that leaves both sides feeling some comfort. I did a transfer once. Terms were 50% of money sent, then point transfer, then remaining 50% of money sent. Each side had some risk. It worked for us. Good luck!

Thank you for the response. I understood that it would take some trust on both sides. Just wanted to hear from some people who have done it before what they recommend.

I've done one transfer in to my account and one transfer out. Both were for about $1300, give or take. In both cases, cash was sent first and THEN the transfer was made. I paid by paypal and the fellow DVC member called right after the transfer. The points were in my account instantly. Earlier this year when I transferred points to a fellow DVC member, they preferred to send me a bank check rather than use paypal. The moment the bank check got to me (overnighted mail) I called and did the transfer of points to their account.

Transfers work well for me. I think they have much less risk than renting to a non DVC member, personally. If I need points or have extra, transfers will be the way I will go. And in either direction, cash will be sent first before the transfer is made.

i've only done a few transfers. i received payment in full first, transferred the points (as soon as MS was open), then immediately called the receiving DVC member to let them know it was done. i provided the member with my "real" name, snail & e-mail addies, cel & home phone numbers, as well as access to my feedback on e-bay & other boards.

there is no way to be sure you won't be scammed, but you can protect yourself somewhat by using a more "experienced" DISner (one who has been here a while & has a somewhat significant amount of posts unrelated to the rent/trade forum).

good luck!

When I transfered points to another member: I recieved full payment first, obtained their member number from them, called MS to transfer points, recieved confirmation number, called other member and gave them the conf. number, points were immediately in their account. Transaction done.

Thank you everyone for your comments. This process makes me a bit nervous if you can't tell.

I did half payment and the rest upon transfer. I found that a lot of people would offer points for transfer but couldn't transfer for a whole bunch of reasons (only one transfer a year, not closed on contract yet, etc.).

For me personally, I wouldn't tranfer full payment and hope for the best. Yes, I know that I could have also "taken" the people for whom I was requesting points from, but I figured my posts here and the time I have been part of the Dis was in my favor. I also gave them my ebay user name etc.

The two times I have purchased transfer points, this is how I did it. I turned down offers to buy transferred points that wanted all the money up front. I feel splitting it in half shows trust on both parties. I also look at the number of posts and would be hesitant to purchase from someone with a low point count. I also use Paypal.

I have rented and received transfers of points. Both involve some risk, but my experience is that transferring is much less risky for the following reasons:

When you transfer, the entire transaction is completed and verified in a matter of a few days, and is not reversable. If you lose out, you have months to formulate Plan B.

When you rent, you pay several months before your trip. This allows a lot of time for the rentor (landlord?) to have change of mind due to a cash crisis, better offer, or whatever. All he has to do to reneg on your deal is to phone MS and cancel or change the names on the reservation. Worst of all, you will have no idea that there is a problem until you arrive at WDW for your vacation.

I was actually able to check and book a reservation within an hour of having the points transfered. I agree that I feel transfering is "safer" than renting.

I've been an owner since 2005 but have never transferred points. Having read the recommended threads in the Rent/Trade board, I understand that it is always a good idea to execute a written rental agreement when renting points. Is there a similar document (transfer agreement) that should be used when transferring points or do many of you just use PMs and telephone calls to come to an agreement?

Thanks,

Joel

I just transferred points two weeks ago to someone. PayPal was used and they paid me up front, if your a verified user of Paypal there are ways to get your money back so that protects the buyer in my opinion. Being the nice guy I am I figured out what the fee to use Paypal would be ahead of the transaction and agreed to split the cost with the buyer to be fair. Once payment was made to me I called member services and had the points transferred immediately and the buyer was able to do their reservation that same afternoon after I called them and told them it was all set. I requested that we both send photocopies of our drivers licenses to each other so we were sure who we each were dealing with and I also took a rental agreement and modified it to reflect point transfer, signed it and faxed it to them, they signed it and sent back a copy with both our signatures. It went very smoothly and worked out well for both of us.:wizard:

I have not transferred points in or out but did rent last eyar and the rental went great. I was very nervous but as long as you create a binding agreement and ask for a copy of the reservation from MS, you are less likely to get a surprise when you reach WDW. I also only rented from someone with a high post count. The rental allowed my family to celebrate my DM's 75th birthday at BWV. MS will also now discuss reservations with your name on it even if they are not made with your points. Not sure if this was an official policy change since last year.

We had points transferred to us earlier this year. I saw someone had the number of points I needed on the Rent/Trade board, contacted them, and sent them a check for the total. The day they got it, he called me and we did a 3-way call to MS. It was taken care of very smoothly.

I guess there has to be a level of trust on both sides for it to work. I hope you have a pleasant experience.

Our experience with the DIS members has always been positive. :thumbsup2
