Best way to get airfare for a large group?

I need to book airfare for 12 people for our trip this summer. Most of the internet sites that I normally use won't let you book for that many. Any ideas on whats the best way to do this (to get the best price)? Call the airline directly? Go with a travel agent? Any suggestions?

Call the group desk at the airline you want to fly. They can help with discounted tickets but they may not be as good as booking online. They only have a limited number of discounted seats online though. So you may have to break the group up.

SWA will let you book 8 at a time. Could you open two IE windows, both with the SWA resservation for 8 people in each window and book them that way to get 16 seats? I need 16 seats in April. Once you click on the ressie and get to the screen to pay, are the seats "saved" till booking is complete? If so, as long as you got both windows to the pay screen at the same time, you would know if you could get 16 seats at that rate.

Will this work; does anyone know?

I don't know where you are in Arkansas but I am from OK and am taking a large group flying out of Springfield MO on Allegiant Air. They also have flights out out of St. Louis, MO.

Allegiant allowed me to make a deposit on the flights, they froze the price and I don't have to pay the balance until 60 days prior to leaving. Their flight times are limited and they only fly into Sanford Airport so I had to arrange transportation from the airport but so far everything has worked out well.

Thanks for all the great information, everybody. Allegiant sounds great, but Springfield is around 5 hours away and St. Louis is more like 9, so that's way more than we're willing to drive!
