I am getting ready to book for 5 people from Long Island to MCO via southwest with points only. We have plenty of points so my plan is to book the departure flight to ensure we get on the first flight of the morning. I want to be able to modify/change If prices fall. What is the best strategy to book.? Individual or by group of 5?

I just did this for 3 and we ended up with three different confirmation numbers. The website is very easy and I'm not sure there is really an option. However the fares did drop and I could easily cancel the flight and then re-buy it with points to get the lower fare-it was a little tedious because I had to do it 3times but it worked!

No reason to cancel your flight and rebook. Just pull up your existing flight and use "Change Reservation" to select the same or different flight. Your points will be adjusted accordingly.

What if the new discounted fare is only available for a portion of the party(say 3) will the system allow me to adjust only those 3. I had this issue last time when I booked 4 seats on one reservation. The newer discounted prices were not showing up for all 4 seats but were for 2. I think I will do 3 reservations. 2 with 2 people and one with a single.

Oh that's probably what I did but I did need to do it for a three tickets separately. It was quick and easy.

As PP said, you get individual confirmation numbers when you book with points. I booked a flight for 2 ppl and I got 2 conf numbers. When I went to change, I had to change each one. And then they all have to check in separately too. Points is different than cash.

I have used points for the last three trips within the last year.
I always use one way flights and i always do no more than two persons on a reservation.
It makes changes very easy. ;)
