I prefer shoes that allow my feet to breathe/expand a little, so I avoid sneakers/running shoes in the afternoons when you're already hot/swollen. It's ok to start off with sneakers, but we had to return to our hotel room each afternoon for my youngest DD's nap so I'd always change shoes. I have a great pair of Dansko Sara sandals that are super comfy, with a firm but cushioned sole. Also, while not recommended for everyone, I rotate with my Sanuk yoga mat flip flops. I prefer toe coverage, but they are super cushioned and really comfy.
