We watched it in Japan and the view was pretty good. We didn't go down near the water, but stayed up near Mitsukoshi. As that area is slightly elevated we had a good view. We weren't looking straight on to stargate, but we could sort of see what it was showing. The projections looked very pale on the center piece compared to what was on the tacos, and I don't know if it was the angle or if that's just what it looks like.
The best part of that spot is you can pretty much wander up 10 minutes before the show and find a spot. We aren't huge fans of the show, so there's no way we are staking out a spot for it an hour or more in advance. But if we're in that area when it goes off, it is a pretty good spot to stop and watch - and no crowds!
