G'day

I've been looking around the 'net a little and have a few ideas about where my group might head for our lunches & dinner. I'm trying to avoid generic fattier fast food like burgers & fries, and too much deep fried food. Not that I'm trying to avoid it completely and spend a lot of time and money sitting down at top-end restaurants.... I guess I'm after a balance. Hopefully I don't across as a really picky eater.... I just know what my family likes :-)

What I've chosen so far is these ones. Not really planning to hit them all, just a list to have handy to help decide at the time.
Soup Bowls & Pacific Wharf Cafe
Cafe Orlean
Hungry Bear
Ariel's Grotto
Big Thunder BBQ
Trader Sams
Brennans

Steakhouse55 & Napa Rose are not really on the list due to how long I guess the sit down would take and cost.

Back up options:
Broadwalk Pizza
Lucky Fortune
Carnation Cafe.

So the point of this thread is where should I head (whether on this list or not) if we need a break from all the meat? Either a good vege dish or a nice salad? I'm thinking soup bowls must be pretty high on the list.

I'm not a huge fan on Cesar Salads, I'd rather have something with vinaigrette. Also interested in other types of vegetarian dishes except perhaps for cream-based pastas.

Any advice appreciated!

I am vegetarian and also gluten intolerant. When I last went I ate gluten free pasta and marinara from Pizza Port, beans and rice from Rancho Del Zocalo, eggs and potatoes with fruit from Goofys Kitchen, a rice a veggie bowl from Lucky Fortune Cookery and tomato basil soup with a gluten free blueberry muffin from Jolly Holiday which was my favorite! I loved all of the food that I had though!

Vegetarian stuff is at the two Mexican restaurants (strangely, my fave is the kid's meal bean and cheese burrito!).

Paradise Garden Grill has vegetable and tofu skewers that are QUITE good. You can ask for all of the sauces if you can't make up your mind; they just come in little cups on the side.

The Vegetarian Chili is soooooo good. If you aren't in the mood for a huge hunk of bread, you can ask for it in a separate bowl, and they will put the bread into a bag. That way you can eat just the bread you wish to eat, without *having to* eat the bread or throw it away if it's mushy with soup. (this works with all the soup/breadbowls, though I've only ever tried it with the chili)

Bengal BBQ's veggie skewer is good as well! The veggie chunks are very large, and it was very filling. And since it's just veggies, you're filling your belly without feeling bad about it.

Plaza Inn has penne with marinara that's very nice. A big plate of that with a side salad is great for me and my husband to share.

RiverBelle Terrace has vegetarian po-boys. I can't describe what they taste like, except that we liked ours.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the great tips. I'll be checking them all out before we go to see what my group would like the most; I think that'd be easy considering the advice given.

Good to hear that you can get the soup in a bowl instead of the bread, that should help alot.

Also a vegetarian, and there were a couple other places I can reccomend:

In Downtown Disney: If you don't have kids with you, or will have some time away from the kids, check out the UVA Bar. They have some yummy veggie small plates. I've had some good salads there, and they also have a couple different veggie flatbreads. My favorite things is probably either the stuffed squash blossoms or the Mediterranean dip trio.

In California Adventure: Usually, people only go to get a Picnic meal as part of a World of Color package, but they are also available to walk-up customers. The Mediterranean Veggie platter was delicious. Grilled veggie wrap with hummus, couscous, raw zucchinni and squash salad, and a lemon bar. The portion is pretty big, and very reasonably priced for a Disney meal.

Finally, it's worth looking at the Steakhouse 55 breakfast menu. I have no reason to go there for dinner, but their breakfast offerings are AMAZING and quite reasonably priced. They are also happy to customize, like replacing the Canadian Bacon on my eggs benedict with tomato. It does mean leaving the park and sitting down, though, which you may not want to do, but you'll won't find a more peaceful breakfast anywhere in the DL. (We go there on MM days. It makes a nice break after being in the park for 3 or 4 hours.)

Finally, don't forget to ask about veggie options that might not be on the menu. Even some of the counter service places will make you something, if you ask!

I just had the toasted cheese sandwich with tomato basil soup at the new Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe. It was yummy, especially the soup!
