Best UY for travel in October

Thanks to folks on the forums, I'm looking at buying resale for AUL with most of our annual trips occurring in October for Fall Break. What UY should I be looking for? Is there a specific UY that would benefit me more for the October time frame? I'm having a hard time understanding the UY thing beyond that is when my points are available and to keep all contracts at that UY.

Thank you,

When possible, you want to travel early in your UY so you have time to bank / use / rent your points in the event you need to cancel or reschedule your trip.

If there is any chance your trip may start last few days of Sept or you think you may need to walk a reservation, go with Sept, otherwise Oct is probably best.

Sept and Oct are somewhat limited finds overall via resale (not sure about AUL specifically). If you are buying resale and want to open your options (and future options) August should be good, too. Depending on resort (and future point purchases) August seems less "hard to find" possibly making things easier overall.

I will say like others have passed on the wisdom to me but your usage will change over time. My UY at this point (originally had two but sold the other) is based on when I would never travel (Feb->Apr) which is my my UY is April. Just think about it this way you say October now but what about kids, grandkids, change in work, or other things? Would this change when you might travel?

In the end from my view is that if I have to cancel last min I would just rent out my reservation or bank my points (if possible) because having an extra 4-6 months to use points in holding won't be of use since I would only be cancelling for serious medical issues or financial issues and planning a week long Disney trip inside 30 days is not something I am really going to do when you can't guarantee a room.

Prevailing wisdom would say October UY, but I'd actually suggest August. This still puts Oct near the beginning of your UY, but gives you flexibility should kids/grandkids require some shift in travel plans to include the summer. It also gives you a longer window to walk, if you needed to. Most importantly, August is one of the most common UYs, so the chances of finding contracts you want is higher - likewise, since it is more popular, probably easier to sell. And if in the future you want to add on, an Aug UY makes it more likely to find the contract you want. I have a SEP UY myself, and wish now I had gone with an Aug UY for those reasons.

I was going to suggest August, also ( for the same reasons ).

October Owner here too and I feel like there are fewer October use years out there. It took us forever to find what we really wanted!

To OP - I agree, I would look for a September or October UY, and perhaps even back to August if need be.

My family travels in September and we bought a direct September UY. It works for us, but finding a September or October UY resale is few and far between (just in case you want to add-on later).

I think you could get August/Sept/October and it would suit you well for your travel time.

Good luck! 🍀

That's what is confusing for me.... Prior to opening this forum, I guessed the answer was going to be Nov or Dec. Thinking that, if u get your points in Oct, (or want to travel in Oct) you have those 11 or 10 months to adjust if you need..... this way to dont get in the habit of borrowing (because that always gets me in trouble). ugh

There is no Nov UY, so you’d have to go Dev UY. But the problem with that is you’d be traveling in the end of your UY.

Your UY points are valid from the 1st day of the month of your UY till the last day the month before your UY, and you have till the end of the 7 month of your UY to bank your points forward to the next UY.

If you have an OCT UY, your points are valid Oct1 to Sep 30. After Sep 30, they expire and you lose the points! If you travel in Oct, this means if you need to cancel your trip or move it, so long as you do so 30+ days in advance, you have until Sep 30 of the following year to use the points, and until May 31 of the following year to bank them into the next UY.

If you had a DEC UY and traveled in October and needed to move your trip, you would not be able to bank them (as your banking Deadline was July 31), and you’d have only until November 30 to use them before they expire.

It's a confusing system! You don't need to "get your points" before you book with them. You know the points are coming into your account October 1 (if you have Oct UY). So 11 months (or 7 months, for non-home resorts) before your October trip, you book your stay. You aren't borrowing, because the current year points will be in your account WHEN YOU TRAVEL. As opposed to when you book. (This is a point that eluded me at first, too.)

June, August, Sept will all work fine. October could be problematic if you want to walk a reservation.

The problem with these use years is that they have banking windows in the Spring. So, if you wanted to go on a summer trip one year, you'd have to roll into fall instead of next summer. That can be tough to do with DVC's fall frenzy bookings.

Another option if your other plans might be summer would be an April UY. This has a banking deadline of November, so if you didn't go this summer, you could roll into fall or bank to next summer.
