I'm new to the whole Universal thing,

What are the best times of the year to go to Universal? I've heard that mid-August is a good time...

Is winter time like... mid-January a good time to go also?

Any other times of year when the parks are less crowded?

Let's put it this way...stay away from the parks during any holiday weekend, Spring Break and especially the week between Christmas and New Years. Just about any other time is good...I like going in the late fall and winter myself.

Since I'm a Floridian I pretty much dread going to the parks in the summer when it's in the 90's,so for me August is more waterpark time.I love the parks between October and May and as Metrowest said stay away from Holidays,Spring Break,mid-December through first days in January and I would tell you to hit the parks on a weekday as you will find a more calm atmosphere with shorter waits.

check the website for the hours of operation.
when the parks close early or when the express pass costs very little to the public, that will be the lower attendance time to be at the parks. (october is the exception for hhn when parks close early)

when the on site hotels are in low/value season rates, also an indicator of low attendance at the parks.

I think September is a really good time to go, not sure about mid august, very hot and still may be kind a crowded, but it depends on when school goes back, after that it will be better.

Yes I went in February once, that's a good time to go, anytime after the first week of january probably through the end of Feb., (ending when spring breaks begin) are good times.

We were there Feb 2 & Feb 3rd and the crowds were so low, that the EP lanes weren't even open! (Good and bad...the bad was we were onsite, and didn't get to use our room key for the EP lanes :guilty: )

did you ever feel you would have wanted to use the ep lanes? what was your longest wait? since that's such a huge on-site perk, i'm surprised they'd close them. just curious, since i'm thinking our first universal trip will be this winter, and i've sold dh on the idea mainly because of the ep lane for on-site guests.

Well, that Friday (when EP's were closed), there wasn't any wait....the wait was just like being in an EP line. However, that Saturday, the lines were longer and EP lanes were open...felt like the old VIP again. :thumbsup2 They only closed them because the crowds were very low. You can read my trip report if you click the link in my sig. Depends on your travel dates as to how crowded it will be.

We've gone twice the first week of November. Weather is great and crowds are very reasonable. Walk on to many rides, 10-15 minute waits for the popular ones.

Sadly my DW is now employed by the school system so we are stuck with prime times from here on out.
